What Are You Doing?

I am keeping too busy. I watch Alyssa a lot and that is about all I get done when she is with me. She is so much fun. Right now I am getting ready to fix food for a birthday supper for Amber our youngest daughter. This will be Sunday night. This is our menu with her two sisters bringing some of the food.

Beef Manhattan (this includes of course the bread, brown gravy and mashed potatoes)
Chicken and Noodles (home made noodles from fresh eggs)
Green Beans (home grown and canned)
Corn
Broccoli
Candied Sweet Potatoes (home grown sweet potatoes)
Coleslaw
Relish Plate
Apple Salad
Fruit Salad
Deviled Eggs (home grown eggs)
Cottage Cheese
Rice K. Treats
Birthday Cake

Also on the same Sunday is our church's monthly meal which of course is a pitch in dinner so I will fix some things for that too.

Also have been working when we can on cleaning out the little 3 room house we have that was used for storage and cleaning it up and going to get it painted with the girls help, inside and out. Make it livable again.

What have you all been doing to keep you busy? I am off to make the noodles.

Not much going on in my life, but here in CA we are looking forward to a bit of desperately needed rain. Today I must deliver a gift, go to Home Depot, get the dog out to play with his friends. I made chili yesterday, so it will keep me from having to cook today.

Good to hear from you, Marilyn Sue. Those homemade noodles will be so yummy.

Hi Kim...Don't be all worried...This thread is not meant for that..:-) It is just to keep our friends well informed and to teach others what to look for and be aware of, and up to us to decide what to do with it.. We just deliver the news and the public choses what they want to do.. If I were you, I would be more worried of not knowing what could possibly cause harm to your plants than to find out too late, possible after throwing a plant away after it's demise the way many I know had to do in the past. Now you are armed with information that will help you stay ahead of the game in case it happens, avoid future problems, and if you should have any problems from not taking precautionary steps, how it could of started, and what to watch for when you do visit places that sell plants or when you receive them from any source.. I would just keep a close eye on them, and if you notice any strange happenings with your plants, check your cultural habits.Be informed about how to care for them as best as you can learning from these forums.. Learn as much as you can about those jades and what keeps them healthy and happy..Visit the Cactus and Succulents forum..There are jade threads galore.. I would defiantly have a magnifying glass available, and this thread at your disposal if your plants should ever encounter the problems associated with pest's spoken of here.. Josh...My sister loves the point of peat moss you brought up..She says thanks! I say thanks for your advice too.. Reading all your messages has been like hearing the latest updates on my three sisters. That's a compliment and sincere thank you. Crohn's disease, Graves disease, fibromyalgia and arthritis (Rheumatoid/Osteo)have reared their ugly heads among my 3 sisters but left me inexplicably unscathed. The family is an autoimmune minefield...LOL. After the ONE night I went home to get some sleep I came back to my father's house to find 2 cars and no father. When your 82 year old father is MIA without explanation you naturally worry. Turns out he had a second serious bout of Atrial Fibrillation and went to the hospital without telling me. Ask me if I wasn't feeling guilty for leaving him and upset with him for not calling me. He didn't want to interfere with me taking my best friend to a colonoscopy appointment Monday AM. I didn't sleep again Monday or Tuesday nights but got a couple hours sleep earlier tonight when I landed back at my father's with Pop in tow from hospital/cardiology office. No Coumadin yet until results of 3 week montoring device show if he's having small episodes of A-Fib when he gets chest tightness on treadmill at gym. Coumadin and exercised induced symptoms are the worst for him. He's extrememly active physically (so he doesn't fall asleep!) although we're having memory issues. Well, I've whined again but it feels better to get it out. I went outside yesterday at first light to rake and do a little garden clean up. It was glorious and relaxing. If all stays well for next week or so I'll have cooked my 5th Thanksgiving dinner and actually gotten somewhat used to it. Part of family will be here and Dad can have his turkey dinner without dietary restrictions of blood thinner. He's all about his food but luckily for me not picky...LOL. All in all, I'm a pretty lucky chickadee tonight. :) Good wishes for all of your health challenges as well. I think I'm going to get some Lavender heat wraps to relax me when I'm exhausted but can't sleep.

I'd take a saw to it and loosen those roots. If it's going into the ground this is your only chance to try and open up the roots and get them going in the right direction. I'd likely saw off a good inch or two from the bottom and deeply score the sides so I could get my fingers in there and start working. I'd do this when I had a lot of time, wasn't in a hurry, I'd do it in shade, and I'd have a spritzer bottle of water nearby so things didn't dry out too badly while I was working. I'd have the hole dug and ready for it, too. If you really have to go at it be sure and devise some type of shade for it at planting. It will be stressed and the roots will be unable to provide enough moisture for full sun conditions for the first couple of weeks. I use stakes, clothespins, and an old sheet or floating row cover. And make sure the water actually penetrates when you water. You'll have to baby it for a bit but they usually recover quite well given deep watering and a bit of time in the shade.

I am lucky to have many options here: Goodwill (which will take things like unmatched socks or shoes, stained or torn clothing - to recycle Volunteers of America does also); the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for things that can be used for home repair or remodeling, including some major appliances; the Volunteers of America, Furniture Bank, and Salvation Army for all sorts of household goods, working electronics, decor, and furniture (they each have their own lists of what they will or will not take). The one thing that no thrift store or charity will take is a crib, but those are easy to give away on Craigslist. We also have some smaller local groups that look for more specialized things. We also have 2 community "Pre-cycle" days when people are encouraged to put stuff out at the curb for people to "shop". For example, I don't burn my candles, just use them on a warmer for the scent, and I always set out the ones I am done with - they are taken quickly. Things like half a roll of carpet padding, or insulation, used flowerpots, garden tools, old fencing - all get taken. The city also has a free electronics recycling drop off - the only no-no are TVs and monitors. I am amazed at how many people are not aware of that (or won't bother - it is right in the middle of our small suburb!) I belong to 2 local Facebook "free, borrow, trade" groups too. I tend to give away books and excess plants there. Books can be taken to the used book store to sell or just give away; or donated to the library for their fundraiser sale. When I have or have found a solid piece of furniture that just needs some rehab, maybe refinishing or a minor repair like a little wood glue or a screw, I post it on craigslist and/or FB - it is always taken. It gets picked up from the porch, no personal contact needed. Lastly, we have scrap collectors that make the rounds the afternoon before trash pickup. That is the best way to get rid of broken metal items.

sitting here wondering if dh has made the right decision to leave one company for a consulting firm as it's head....the owner had a heart attack (and recovered) but it stepped up our plans, sigh! today is his last day...

much rather be thinking about fun events like the birthday party!

Finished up marching band season last week, so full swing into fund raising to pay for it and get started on next year. Working on a million work projects. And for fun, Halloweenifying (from Google's front page today) my son.

Beautiful day here! It was a little crispy this morning, with heavy frost on the cars, but we still haven't had a full killing frost so that I can begin my garden cleanup.

I had a follow-up doctor appt this morning and survived it. :O) Not sure what I'll be doing between now and Sunday night, but I am sure it's going to be fun! I'll have some friends over for darts and good food sometime this weekend, and we'll probably have a small family get-together to celebrate my mom's birthday. It might be too cold for golf, so I'll try to do at least some garden cleanup. I still need to get all of my garlic planted!

Grumbling about getting up in the dark! Come ON, end of Daylight Savings! Also not nice to see SNOW showers this morning. Our Westie was thrilled. He *loves* this kind of weather.

I helped DH flip mattresses this morning after breakfast. This is one of his two days at the high school. He helps in a frosh-soph class of kids working to read and write at grade level. They are bright kids, but many have had their educations interrupted; many Latino kids. (Anyone who thinks teachers have it 'easy' should volunteer in some classrooms for a while!)

Love to hear from Marilyn Sue, whose energy never ceases to amaze me: Fulltime wife, cook, mother, grandmother, church lady...and keeper of hens who lay multicolor eggs!

Socks, wish I could send a little of our rain south for you....my 2 hour drive home from Mom's last night was ghastly. It finally got to everyone else and traffic slowed to about 45 for poor visibility and water on the freeway close to my exit - which I thought I might miss because I couldn't see it.

Marilyn, homemade eggs noodles! I can't remember the last time I had them and have only made them a few times. Sounds wonderful, but I've got some leftover chicken, sausage, bean stew for tonight. Some broth there but the noodles would be too much for the cannellini beans already in it. Hope your dinner is a huge success and lots of fun.

I've done DH's invoicing for the week and am cleaning house today. He tells me he needs his favorite coffee pods for the Keurig, and is out of toothpaste in his bathroom. Not low....out. Why do men not give some warning.

Baby shower breakfast tomorrow morning that I'm looking forward to, a niece-in-law I'm especially fond of.

Today...finally a down-day so I can try out a new rug shampooer (from QVC) on some puddles that just keep returning after the carpet cleaners do their job. Hope, hope, hope. Huff and Puff in the afternoon and DGS here to greet Trick or Treaters coming to the door. We never know who/what he will be (25, autistic), but he loves to open the door and hand out the goodies.... in costume.

Marylyn's feast sounds so yummy... our chef (DS) will probably do another salad with salmon while I start a soup for the long wet weekend.

Speaking of men....mine is the opposite, he keeps picking up those huge packages of toothpaste and brushes even tho those products are on his shelf in his bathroom. Who knows....we dusted well and cleaned dresser drawers yesterday... 3 pkgs of underwear unopened. I guess it is good to know he is planning to stay around for a while.

I need to get the Halloween stuff out.

Been busy reclaiming my house, after a two week and two day absence, for the most part. :)

I left home on Friday of fall break, for a bike camp out... but it rained and was cold, and none of us rode. Drove home for one night, made a mess, and left again to drive to Hot Springs Arkansas with girl friends from Tulsa. Drove home for one night, made a mess, and left again, and drove west to spend a week and a day with my daughter, son in law and the grand kids. Drove home for one night, made a mess again, and left again, this time for another bike camping weekend, where I rode a total of 75 miles (on two days) on the back of Mel's tandem. Came home, again made a mess, and went back to work the next morning.

I have been working on cleaning up all those messes all week long.... ;) and now, will make a Halloween mess!

Your food always sounds so yummy, Marilyn Sue! I made chicken N dumplings yesterday so I could take it to work all weekend...which is where I was today. Just got home a little bit ago. It's cold and raining. Snow expected by midnight. I'm not looking forward to the morning commute. 80,000 people expected in Lexington this weekend for the Garth Brooks concert tonight and tomorrow. Two shows. Thankfully, the first group was still in from the 6 pm show and the 10 pm showing hadn't started in to the downtown area yet. I did notice heavier traffic on my way home, though. Not a lot but some. Hoping tomorrow night will be the same.

rob333.....cute Halloween pic of your son!

I purchased another house, rental property, a few weeks ago. Now doing a whole house remodel. The 1080 sq feet upstairs has been painted, twice. The kitchen ripped out & ordered, cabinets came in 2 days ago, finished installing them with DH today. I landscaped the front & back yard, planted 3 trees, 4 rug junipers, 3 thujas, a box elder and tree rose of sharon. I've watered everything by hand as the sprinkler system is drained. Fertilized the lawn & applied Scotts restore. Got a FREE lawnmover off CL, leaving it for the tenants. Ripped out carpet to expose the pretty wood floors. Making Sunbrella Roman shades for the 96" wide picture windows...

I haven't started on the tearout in the basement....

Still making breakfast, lunch & dinner for the 2 of us every day. Laundry....etc....
