Wow - that is cool. I was wondering the same thing Linda! I would think if you left it "steam" a few minutes after taking it out of the microwave it would be cooked. Good fresh sweet corn doesn't have to be cooked very long.

I would need a really big microwave for my sweetcorn that I freeze. I freeze over 200 ears (husked, cooked, cut, and put in bags) - so that method wouldn't work. I will sure try it for the corn we eat off the cob though!

And to think that I've been peeling off the husks & wiping away the silks... Then I wrap it in wax paper & cook it in the microwave... but only about 4 minutes.. I hope I remember this next summer.. corn is over in my neck of the woods..

I think it's edible when he's done. I do my corn the same as Cate, and I do 2 ears for 5 minutes, so I would think 8 minute would cook them ready to eat.

I've done this, but never cut the bottom off like he did. This way looks much easier. We did always boil or grill ours afterwards (not really sure we did the full 4 minutes in the microwave though)... but we do like our corn a little more done.

Am I the only person who hasn't heard of "cooler corn"?

As an obsessive food nerd, you'd expect that I would have

at least heard of it, but over the weekend I was blindsided

by the simple genius of this method for cooking loads of

corn on the cob perfectly.

I was hepped to it while visiting my family in Maine. Short

story: We like corn on the cob. And with eight adults at

the table, that means a couple of dozen ears. We would

have used the lobster pot to cook them all, but the lobster

pot was busy steaming lobster.Then my sister, a capable Maine

cook with years of camping experience says "let's do cooler

corn!" Before I can ask "what the hell is cooler corn?" a

Coleman cooler appears from the garage, is wiped clean,

then filled with the shucked ears. Next, two kettles-full of

boiling water are poured over the corn and the top closed.

Then nothing.

When we sat down to dinner 30 minutes later and opened it,

the corn was perfectly cooked. My mind was blown. And I'm

told that the corn will remain at the perfect level of doneness

for a couple of hours.

Turns out, Cooler Corn is pretty well known among the

outdoorsy set But for those of us who avoid tents as

much as possible, it's perfect for large barbecues and way

less of mess than grilling. In fact, I may even buy another

cooler just so I'm ready for next summer. Now that I'm in

the know.

I love corn season....except DH wants to soak it in the sink for hours, then ya put it on the grill, husks and all, ya cook it for like 20 minutes, then turn it out on the platter.

Who wants to shuck 24 ears of hot corn, get the silk off and ready to eat by the time the steaks are done?

I have done the cooler corn but you need to know that it will warp the heck out of your cooler so do not use a good one! Use one that is old and you do not mind messing up.

I leave my corn exactly as it comes all husks on wrap it in foil and put it in the oven at 450 for 45mins or so, It comes out just like grilled on the pit and no silks the silks melt away and basically turn to like a butter almost.
Everyone loves it that way.

I am going to give that microwave method a try some day when I have some corn.

I sent that info on Cooler Corn to my sister who's involved with Girl Scouts... I think it is a great idea for large groups...

I cook corn on the cob in my potato bag - one minute on each side for each ear of corn. ie. 4 ears of corn, 8 minutes - can't wait to try it with my corn tomorrow night!!

Interesting. The problem with these microwave videos is they seldom give a hint as to the power of the microwave and they vary so much that the time isn't reliable. A 500w microwave won't cook in the same time as a 2000w unit. If you knew it you'd be able to eliminate some of the guesswork. But it's a starting point I guess.

I'd guess that a light soak of the ears might help too since this is essentially steaming the corn and the steam would loosen the silks. (Nice trick there btw.) The "cooler corn" is nothing more than steaming too. I like to steam corn rather than boil it. Good, fresh corn needs very little cooking, if any. Actually AFAIC there's nothing wrong with "raw" corn, though I prefer it hot. I learned a long time ago that it's a waste of time to try to heat up a bunch of water to submerse the corn and cook it. Less water, a steamer basket and it heats quickly. Or I put it in the ever-useful Nesco roaster when I'm making a pot roast or something.

Like you say, the problem is to remember to try it next time!

About 2 min. per cob with a couple of layers of husk remaining in average microwave does the trick ... try a cob at a time to adjust the length of time needed.

I've seen the cooler cobs. But I jstu can't bring myself to poor boiling water into that plastic who knows what chemicals will boil out of the plastic. grosses me out. lol
