Don't get me started on the lack of proper grammar usage that is overlooked in the schools today! Yes, "could of, would of, should of" bothers me too. However, the one that sets my teeth on edge is "all the sudden". Ugh.

I will correct my grandchildren. My children don't need to be corrected, as they were raised to speak properly. The rest of the population simply gets a snarky look!

This is the fall out from so many using the "short cut" language of electronics. It's a shame.

....and what is the "looking to" that is so often used? For instance, "I'm looking to sell my house."

One of the grammatical errors that has gotten to me over the years is people who use raise are raising or raised their children. You can raise crops or a pay rate or taxes but you rear children. Another one is the use of extra word unnecessary to the sentence. Sticking in a "like" or "you know" every few words.

Well, I know I'm guilty of not remembering when it's proper to use who and whom. My pet peeve is "irregardless".

I agree, I guess the 'could of' comes from them hearing 'could've' and they don't know the difference. I certainly make my share of mistakes, but try very hard to be grammatically correct. I attribute the difference to our generation's love of reading. We are used to reading the written language as it was meant to be written. They are not.

I think our language has a casual and formal version now.....akin to Chinese. If you think you should be spoken to in a "formal" manner, maybe your not amongst your own click of friends. So.....no....don't correct adults unless you wish to alienate them. You certainly won't make people feel accepted and comfortable around you if you correct their speech.

Grammar and spelling are not my strengths...so I do appreciate it when people poiont out my chronic mistakes.

My pet peeves are educated people who spell a lot as one word. "Alot" is not a word! It's really not hard to remember. A lot -- two words.

I also can't believe the number of people who say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". Could care less usually makes no sense...

I was going to say what Lynn said. Could've, could of. I can understand that. But it isn't correct. It should've been taught in school.

I see and hear this one a lot. Here, on other boards,
when speaking to people. The use of seen.
"I seen it there." Ah, no, you didn't! LOL You saw it there. "I seen the shoe you were trying to find."
ack! LOL

On the boards, on the computer, I use ..... WAY to much.

I know my kiddies can't be bothered to use an apostrophe, but I would hope they would at least write "couldve." Who knows, they probably write "cudda." Ugh.

I fully expect kids will be writing "cruze" for "cruise" or even "crews" now that Chevrolet has named a car the Chevy Cruze.

The problem as I see it is that it's hard to blame the kids when the teachers don't know any better. I worked for a school district and it was shameful though amusing to see these college-educated idiots who couldn't put together a grammatically correct note. I started keeping them to show people and they were stolen. Either by someone covering for them or someone who wanted the amusement. I'd get notes written in crayon with atrocious spelling and grammar. And these people were being paid to teach. It's totally shameful. Even on forums I see people who should know better who post some of the silliest things. A typo is normal and expected. Stupidity from those who theoretically should know better is not.

Kids grow up with TV as a babysitter and the shows now aren't exactly like "I Love Lucy". They're using and learning from video games and instant messages.

But who are we to talk in reality. Look at the overly-abbreviated posts on the forums! Almost as bad as texting! LOL

Years ago I did daycare in my home. I had a boy that was 12 and he always said "ain't got none." It drove me crazy. I would correct him only to hear him say it again. One day his mom was here and she said "ain't got none." Need I say anymore?? This same boy walked over to a neighbors and when they came back the kids said he broke a glass bottle in the road and threw one at a big rock on the corner. I asked him why he did it and he said his dad does it.... I made him go clean it up. And you wonder why kids are the way they are these days.. Some parents are clueless!!!!!

My biggest peeve is when "at" is added to the end of a sentence, as in "Where is it at", or "Do you know where it's at?"
