Freegan is dumpster-diving for food.
There's a 1/2 hour documentary tonite on the freegan lifestyle that I'm going to watch. The guy in the trailer said he hasn't bought food in a week....gets all he wants from the dumpsters.
I know there's a lot of restaurant and people waste, but honestly, I can't imagine looking thru a dumpster. I'd be horrified that someone would see me or I'd be arrested. I don't even know if it's "legal".
A little bit off-topic:
For a while hubby and I would walk around our neighbourhood on garbage day and take the laundry jugs and nice glass jars out of the blue boxes. It turns out, that once the stuff goes to the curb, it's actually the city's property. If we have permission from the home-owner it's okay. We did meet a couple of the owners, I asked if I could have their laundry jug, and they were more than pleased to pass on something that could be used. Weird feeling though, I felt like I was stealing.
I did meet a couple of guys on bicycles with large garbage bags on their handlebars that are obviously cruising for something sellable.
