New flu vaccine for seniors

Below is a link about a new flu vaccine for seniors. My doctor told me about it over a month ago. Said it would be available by mid October. It seems to be a well kept secret as I have not seen it mentioned by the news media.

My DH got the "big" one yesterday and I got
the regular one. We got these at the Kroger
Pharmacy. The pharmacist told him his was going
to be the big one.

Any prediction as to when flu is expected to start in the Midwest? I'd rather let some other people 'go first' with this year's regular and beefed-up vaccines. (Bad Sue!)

I got both of them this autumn, the seasonal flu shot in September and the H1N1 in October when I worked at a City Flu shot clinic. No problems with either one. I get a flu shot every year. I work every day with very vulnerable people. Having had the flu before, I NEVER want it again, and I certainly don't want to pass the flu on to someone who might die from it. Yes, there are risks, as there are with anything we do, but the risks from a flu shot, or any other immunization are very, very small, considering the millions of people who get immunizations every year. Several years ago I got both the flu shot and the Pneumovax and 4 days later I had shingles. It might have been too much of a jolt to my immune system (but it might have had nothing to do with the immunizations), but with quick medication, I got through it with minimal discomfort. In the future, I'll continue to get both vaccines, just not at the same time. It's the non-immunized who spread disease - whether it's a preventable childhood disease or influenza. Non-immunized children pass measles, rubella, whooping cough, etc, to children frequently too young to have been immunized. These diseases can still kill children. My SIL was not allowed to get his smallpox vaccination before he left home for his deployment in Iraq because of the risk to both kids. I agree with igloochic, if you are not going to get flu shots, stay away from others if you feel sick, don't assume it's not the flu, the risk is too great to other people.

A little girl age 6 just died here in San Diego from swine flu. That being said, I will not get the vaccine, nor will I get it for my 7 year old. She's had the regular flu many times, and just as my parents did when I was a kid, you treat it with common sense. When she got the flu three weeks ago and missed three days of school I called her doctor to see what he thought. He said to let it run its course as long as she did not exhibit symptoms like shortness of breath, inability to drink/eat/go to the bathroom, etc. She recovered just fine. I've never had the flu shot, and neither has my daughter, and unless something drastically changes, we will never get the shots. She is fully immunized, btw. I just never saw the benefit to the shot since everyone I know who got it always got sick after, sometimes really really really sick! And I get it once a year, or once every other year, or sometimes twice a year, but I figure that's normal. Wash hands. Practice good hygiene. Cover your sneeze. Don't panic.

Very interesting, alisande. Thanks. Why didn't you have the injection done by the pharmacist? Similarly but in a different sense, I remember some years ago that my own primary care doc at the time told me that his practice didn't have the refrigeration equipment to keep one particular vaccine (I forget which) at the low temp it needed and suggested I get it at a pharmacy or a larger group practice. He's since retired and my new doc is part of a larger medical school faculty practice. I haven't had a similar experience though I do go to a large pharmacy location for annual inoculations needed off cycle from primary care doctor visits.

I'd also think they will survive -- unlike old people whose bodies are already less viable, just because they *are* old. In reading mdln's excellent info, it seems that a lot of damage is done by the person's own too strong response to the infection. Newborns have antibodies from their mothers. While old people certainly have antibodies, over the years the body forgets some antigens, which is why adults get vaccinations for some illnesses. More research is needed, but a young, too strong attack may produce its own set of problems.

As a Senior, I would be very leary with a super dose flu vaccine. This appears to be one Dr. from one clinic. If it was so great like she said, our clinics and the ones from the Mayo Clinic would have put out notices/information. And, most seniors do have to be very careful of too much. The flu is already started but light. To my knowledge there is only one kind offered here. Reg with H1N1. Just a thought.

We just called to make a flu shot appt., and asked about the senior one. Our doctor will not be getting it, and it's not covered by medicare, the nurse said. So it will be the regular for us, I guess.

From what I have been able to find online, it costs more than the regular vaccine and is covered by Medicare. There are differences of opinion about it from the websites I have found. I will get it and hope for the best.

Medicare paid for DH's shot. His arm was a little sore, but so is mine.

I guess we will watch to see if he starts feeling bad, or
clucking like a chicken!!!! I really don't like being
first at these things, but hope the protection works.

NO intention of getting a triple dose of anything, just because of ago. It doesn't make any sense. I read that the rational is that all people over 65 have low immune systems. Can't find any real, tested results that prove this.
It hasn't been out very long, at all....and no way am I going to be a lab rat.
