Mini or faux wood blinds?

I just had my son install for me 9 faux wood 2" blinds and I must say I love the look they give the rooms. They let in a lot more light and brighten the rooms more than w the mini blinds ever did.

Now keeping them dusted will be another issue...LOL.

Have any of you made the switch?

All my home's windows have the 2" faux wood blinds and they look great! My home is a 1913 craftsman and they give an "old fashioned" look. They are very practical for regulating how much sun comes in. I also like the faux wood better than the real (and much more expensive) wood: they don't warp, for one thing, and no one can tell the difference.

i'm considering 2" plantation blinds in faux wood, thou their time has already peaked in design here in orlando. i need something consistent across the front of my house and these would be o.k. in all the rooms. have to do faux wood w/ our humidity, any warping w/ wood would send me to the moon, i'd spot that across the street LOL. not looking forward to the dusting but atleast w/ plantation i don't have to deal with cords. ~ liz

The lambswool duster sticks work well, you need to wipe them at least once every two weeks, and go over them with a damp rag once in a while. They should stay clean.

35% seems like a lot. The main difference is the 2 1/2 inch will have more space between each slat therefore giving you a less obstructed view. Real wood is lighter and has less of those strings (Ladders) that go through each slat. It generally has more colors options but will cost much more. The faux woods are heavier and have more ladders since they are heavier. I think they hold up better to moisture without warping and cost considerably less.

Without knowing the size of your windows and the product that was quoted, a price of $10,000 for 28 windows is quite normal if you are having a professional measure and install them. It comes out to approximately $360 per window. Your least expensive options would be mini blinds, faux wood blinds, and roller/screen shades. Depending on the window size, these products usually start around $200 per window if you are ordering custom. When you start looking into fabric shades such as cellular or Roman shades, you can be anywhere from $300-$500 per window to upwards of a $1000 depending on size of window, fabric, operating system, etc. If you are looking to cover that amount of windows for less, you will need to look into purchasing from a home improvement store or ordering online.

Interesting- I also would have assumed a bigger price difference. We had faux wood (Lowe's brand and Home Depot brand so these were not the high end ones) in our previous home for well over 10 years and they were totally fine. I think another reason I preferred them other than the cost, was that they were lighter weight so raising them was less of an issue. (though we rarely raised or lowered them. we mostly used the tilt )

Mine are 2 inch real wood too and I love them. They are easy to care for and they look great. Mine are off white and I was worried they would make the room darker but not so...

I have the 2" faux wood and I dust them with Swifter.

Be very careful when dealing with them because it only takes a little bending to cause them to SNAP. While dusting the first time, I bent the end a little and it broke off. I was very thankful that I had shortened them when I put them up and I had kept the extras!

We also have the 2 inch blinds. I kept the cell shade I have in the west and south bedroom windows, because of the efficiency they provide winter and summer. They are easier to clean also, but I love the look of the blinds.

I have plastic half-inch mini blinds in my three bedrooms. Some of the slats have broken and I'm thinking of replacing them. JC Penney, where I originally bought them, no longer carries them. May go to wood. It does look much classier.

I ordered mine on line..cut perfectly to size in width and length and delivered within 7 days.... awesome company.

Can you hang the faux wood outside and spray it with a hose?

I'd love to have them, but they must stand up to the "hang them on the side of the garage, spray with cleaner, hose off, and rehang" treatment.

I have hooks in the side of the garage spaced for my window blinds (currently aluminum mini-blinds). It's so easy to take them out there, set the headrail in the hooks and hose them down.

I will say this, they are a LOT heavier then mini blinds. I was surprised and dissapointed to find out how heavy they are (faux wood.) I usually lift them from the middle of the bottom when I need to put them up.

I think they would be washable, but I have no experience.
