Oh, my--the big dig is ugly!

Like any project, I guess it has to start out very ugly before you get to the end. Here is the "pond site" pic from this morning...

...and then from about 7:00 this evening. They dug until after dark---working quickly to beat the predicted rain from Hurricane Ike. *sigh* You can see how deep it looks at one end (the shallow end!)---you can only see the top of one of the two backhoes. And look at all the dirt piled up!! DH is about to have a cow...

Yep, gotta make a mess to do anything! Just remind him how much he's gonna like the final results.

Mmmm, I can almost smell that fresh dirt. Looks like you have a real pretty place and it's going to be worth the mess when it's done.

Tea Clipper is going this week. It's in a prime spot and I have 6 new roses of which Apricot Nectar will probably be its replacement. Adolf Horstmann went bye bye a couple of weeks ago and this week Scentimantal will be dug up and given away. Also going is Catherine Mermet, very small and boring. She was my first Tea and I have newer teas that are 3 times her size. Also under sp consideration, Julia Child. It was a 1.5 grade and probably has too much shade. I may move her to Adolf's vacated spot. That would put her next to Pat Austin which would be a nice color combo. I have no problem with the shovel. It's an opportunity to plant something new and hopefully it will be way better. A garden is a changing thing and sometimes we just have to go for it.

I flew back and forth from Cape Cod, all summer long, to see my mother. We had such a dry period in the early part of the summer that I thought everything in my yard and neighbor's yards would be toast. And some things did not make it. It's the part of gardening that I find enjoyable and crazy making. I'm here in Sarasota for the winter and know dependable landscapers if you want names. pabrocb@yahoo.com I had been sent here to buy citrus my trees. The ones I bought were very small, though. Drymon's Citrus Nursery, 3146 47th Street, Sarasota, FL 34234-5012, (941) 355-1466 I think they close for lunch, so call ahead. yup, thats a mango seedling treefrog, thanks. Im in the smack center of CA in Fresno. I live in the central valley where we get LONG dry summers (typically above 110 degrees) and cool, short, wet winters (Dec and half of Jan). So far, we've had a couple of frosty mornings, but nothing to hard to protect any plants. There is only a bit of damage to dypsis lutescens, majesty palm, hibiscus and bouganvillea. Temperatures begin to rise quickly begining this first week of January so there is minimal danger for any more damage than what is shown in the pics above.

Welcome to Arkansas- don't worry about the snakes and such- you'll get used to them- We moved to North Central Ark about 12 years ago from Wisconsin and have never regretted it- Be prepared to wave a lot when out driving- for some reason everyone waves at every one else- and don't ever think that you can just "run" in the store to pick up something quick- people here like to talk- a LOT. I have been known to spend over an hour getting a loaf of bread!!! It's nice though- if you ever find yourself stranded on the road people will stop to help no matter what the weather! We live outside the very small town of Salem and it took our 2 older children some time to fit in with the locals but when they did they found friends for life- our 2 youngest were born here and I wouldn't raise them anywhere else- If you have ever heard jeff Foxworthy talk about rednecks you know what its like here!!! ( most of what he says is true) As far as the bugs and such- no different from anywhere else, Jonesboro does have a lot of mosquitoes though because of the rice fields. We get copperhead snakes once in a while- usually when they are out sunning themselves- they are not aggressive so if you leave them a lone they will leave you alone- we get a lot of black snakes too- they are good but they can get big so they seem scary- the biggest one we had here was about 7 feet long. We also have a lot of Armadillos that like to dig holes so watch for them- we generally just chase them off because we're not sure how to kill them. Where we live though our biggest pest is the squirrel- we have hundreds of them and they will eat anything- one year they dug up over 100 tulip bulbs that I had just planted- That is about all I can think of- the people here are great- none better anywhere. Didn't DH go over what he wanted before the big dig started?
It's kind of like buying a home. You wonder after you sign the papers if you did the right thing. Then, when you in, you know you did. It's just scary. Ithink you'll love it when it's finished. If not, move it to my house. LOL

OMG! I remember when they dug my pool. They wrecked the whole yard. Not a fun experience. But, oh how I loved the end results.

Soo cool we have big pond on our land but it has get this a leak not all that uncommon in natural ponds...but B got online and found out what we need to do to fix it won't cost tooo much to do and we will have a great pond...can't wait to see the finished pics of yours...Stacy

I do keep reminding DH that after it's dug, he can do whatever he needs to do to "pretty it up" the way he wants it and that this will be a long project---our part of it, at least.

As much as the pond digger tried to warn us that it would be messy for awhile, we're just a little shell-shocked. LOL!

We'll see what tomorrow brings...pray that the rain goes elsewhere for a few more days!

Oh, gosh. Look at all that pretty dirt! We have little dirt and lots of rocks, so I am very jealous, Rita. I'd love a few loads of that stuff.

Good luck getting the rain to hold off. It's going to be a great pond, though, regardless.

If your hubs thinks that looks bad, he should visit a few houses that are having pools put in. When they dig the trenches for the plumbing, it looks like your yard has been hit by several bombs.

Yep, that's the way they look while being dug. Ours was dug almost 4 years ago, and I still remember the fright of the digging.

What did your dh find online about helping the pond hold water? Ours leaked down when it was first dug, my brother told us what to get to sprinkle in the pond to help hold water. I can't remember the name of it now, but will find out if you want me to. Of course, it would've been much better to put the stuff in it before adding water, but my dh seems to do everything backwards! LOL
