Saying Good-Bye to.....

Summer Fruit is hard for me. I really don't care for fall/winter fruit, apples, pears, pumpkin (is that really fruit?), persimmons. I've been baking & eating out of hand peaches & nectarines, had some great raspberries at a good price and a wonderful watermelon a couple days ago. Will probably be ending my trips to local farmers' markets soon til next spring.

I'm in the same funk.
My breakfast is always a bowl of fresh cut fruit...green grapes, bananas and cantelope in the spring....and bananas, cantelope and watermelon during the summer. Winters are whatever i can get, but it must be fresh...not canned or frozen.

Thank you, Krista, I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I suppose the tea roses might be a bit too tender for your area. Elemire, I also thought that Leonie's Apoline should make a good cut flower and I'll test it on the next bloom. Masha, I think you could keep Mrs. Dudley to a reasonable size; it just won't have as many flowers. The teas range from two years to seven months (the rose closest to the camera is the youngest), so they still have quite a bit of growing to do. I just hope I've allowed enough room. Ingrid

in my world.. the usefulness of those plants expired a decade ago ... listen to me.. the front door.. is NOT a spot to spend 3 to 5 years renovating a bunch of grandpa-like old bushes,..... get rid of ALL OF THEM ... maybe if they were out the back door.. i might enjoy watching how they dealt with mutilation... but not out front .... even the one on the right.. when you remove the smaller squat one in front of it.. it will have a big gaping brown spot.. which will look like carp .... whats the rest of your landscapers idea.. other than saving the two i want dead???? where you are... might make a difference!! thx for the pix.. looks nothing like what i imagined ... and dont forget... its not whether these specific plants can recover.. its about the statement you are making at the front door .... big difference there ... ken

I'm with Kevin, above. Stone slab countertops aren't going away, if for no other reason than that they can be more economical than laminate or tile. A good tile-setter here in LA will charge $125/linear foot or more for installation. If you shop right, you can find prefab 8' long granite countertops for as little as $150, with installation and minor fabrication for a few hundred dollars more. It won't be the finest workmanship at that price, but still, you can get a basic 8' countertop with 4" backplash for $600 or less, installed, while the tile-setter's labor alone will be twice that, without adding in the cost of tile, mortar, grout or hardibacker. Unless you're buying prefab laminate counters at the big box store, toting them home yourself, and doing your own templating, cutting, and installation, you'll be hard put to match the price of those prefab stone counters. Special-order laminate costs about twice as much as prefab stone. So much for "In depth" reporting at CNN.

(I recommend the 240 model; the 120 is not powerful enough.) Warning: they're not a showroom, more like where almost brand-new/scratch-dents go, instead of back to manufacturer. So I saw this Miele deal on ebay listed by kitchenguys on Thursday night. I called Friday morning about it. Problem was that I couldn't get there until Monday morning (I was in VT that weekend). So chicken/egg: should I make an ebay bid, or risk losing it auction to someone else? Ian offered to take down the auction, hold it for me until Monday when I showed up to test the cooktop with my pans (which turned out doesn't work w/ induction). Then he proceeded to hold it for me again until Tuesday while I talk it over with DH, before he'd re-list it on ebay. But I bought my new baby! Thank you Ian!

I agree. I don't like summer ,but I DO love the fruit and veggies. 80% of my diet is fruit or veggies, and the prices are already going up. I buy fresh, so now I'll be getting stuff from Brazil. Washington cherries ended a few weeks ago. I love them. Apples are one of my least favorite fruits. I love all berries and will have to pay the price I guess. $2 a pint of blueberries will soon go up to $4 a 1/2 pint.

I agree heather! It's so nice going outside my door and picking fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and peppers! Basil too! YUM.....back to cardboard tasting stuff. :(

that is the beauty of living in FL! it may suck from June thru Aug (thou this yr was quite nice running normal temps + lots of rain) and few veggies or fruit will grow (usually too high night time temps prevent fruit formation) but we are putting in our fall-winter tomatoes & garden now. I ALWAYS love to tell the "keep it local" crowd to enjoy their garden in Dec & Jan LOL ;-)) We have truely become a very spoiled nation when we can access fresh fruits & veggies from around the world, out of season in this country.

If you can find Tastee tomatoes they are a newer FL mass production variety that has a better shelf taste. FYI you might be interested & quite shocked by the tomato industry in FL down in Naples...a good book on modern day tomato industry is out too. ~ liz

I always miss the summer vegetables and fruits too, even though I love all the fall veggies a LOT and enjoy the apple and pumpkin deserts too! I do eat raw apples year around, and like them, but they're not even in the same category as melon, berries, etc... And tomatoes.... I miss summer tomatoes so much!!

I think my local groceries import fruit from Mexico and South America because I see fruit all year round. But the local stuff is winding down. I'm seeing less and less of everything at my nearby Farmers Market. I'm in Long Island NY.

I have been gorging on tomatoes from our garden of 15 plants. They're quite plentiful, but when they're gone I will never eat another till next summer.
