These aren't new films but my kids all loved Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice. They don't have Halloween themes but are comedies that deal with Ghosts (obviously).

There's also Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride (animated), Mars Attacks.

If you google 'funny Halloween movies' there are lots of suggestions with reviews.

I can't stand gory movies, and I'm 64!

But I can remember watching the original Halloween movie years and years ago, and thought it was great.

Around here, 13 is the prime age for kids to go by themselves.

He said no trick or treating this year. Last year, he said he felt odd being so much bigger than the kids surrounding him. Oh well! I suggested he watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, but even that sounds too scary (in his estimation). I thought it was well done, but what do moms know?

The first year my son didn't trick or treat, he dressed up in a really scary costume and handed out candy. Don't know if yours would be into that...

It'd never work for us :( We share a house with people and we live at the bottom of the very long driveway, facing the backyard. It's usually too cold to sit at the top of the drive. You reminded me, Halloween is our annual "block party" here. The people I used to share the house with were so cool. They would show a movie for their son to watch while they handed out s'mores or candy in the front yard. This is the first year in many years they won't do that. Makes me kinda sad (even if they did get a brand new, paid off house, paid off debt, and a brand new baby girl. which is why they moved).

dee, he couldn't handle The Birds. Talk about creeped out! I actually made him watch it. At least it wasn't Psycho. I think everyone should see at least one Hitchcock movie. They're pure directoral genius.

Oh...then those suggestions would scare the bejeezus out of him! Bummer; they are good classic scary films.

I love Hitchcock. Used to watch the TV show and always enjoyed everything he did. Other favs were Night Gallery (specifically The Doll), Twilight Zone and Outer Limits.

What about "Scary Movie" ? It's listed as a comedy. Wikipedia describes it as "Scary Movie is a 2000 horror comedy spoof film ". I've not seen it myself, so can't really say if it is scary or not. But the previews sounded more like a comedy, back in the day, with a lot of ridicule of actual horror movies.

Can't blame anyone for not liking "The Birds". I didn't much like it myself :-( But then I'm not a horror movie fan....

Hmm... but Scary Movie might not be appropriate in other ways. I just did a search on Google for "Is Scary Movie Scary" and found a site that talks about whether it's appropriate for your child. You might want to check this site before deciding about this movie... it describes what is actually in the movie.

Actually, I wonder if this site, www.commonsensemedia.org might have other information about movies that would help you decide which movie might be a good one for your son for Halloween.

There's a really cute movie called "The Woman in White" with Lukas Haas. Not too scary and definitely not gory.
Also, "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp is really good and not too gory.
"The Woman in Black" (came out last year, with the Harry Potter actor) was very well done, I thought. It is not gory at all, but quite scary for a chicken like me. :o)
ParaNorman was cute as well. Oh, and for another animated one, I can recommend "Monster House".
"The Skeleton Key" is not gory whatsoever, but very suspenseful.
Also, have you guys seen "The Witches" with Angelica Houston? If not, well worth it.
Plus, "The Changeling" with George C., Scott and "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland.

I was wrong, the title is "The Lady in White". It's been years since I've seen it and what I remember is how well done it was and how cute little Lukas Haas was.

Rob, in case you want to consider this movie, check the IMDB thread I linked below. Our kids loved this movie when they were young teenagers and they were not traumatized in the least. It's basically a ghost story, and a very well done one at that.

But that is a scary movie.

My granddaughter loves all the Goose Bump series of movies. They come with something like 3 or 4 of them on a DVD. Around this time of the year you can find them at Sam's Club. I have watched them with her and they are basically short movies that are suspenseful, somewhat scarey but not to where they would cause bad dreams. I actually like them myself. I believe there are about 8 to 10 different DVD's of them.

Why do you keep picking on my statement?? As I wrote above, I watched the movie years ago and while I did not remember particulars, I remembered it as cute. And to accuse me of calling child murder and child abuse cute because of that is just offensive.

Here is a very very old movie with Don Knotts call The Ghost & Mr. Chicken. It was made in the 50's and is more funny than scary...

Then there is The Ghost & Mrs. Muir.

Rob, I'm someone who HATES scary or gory (or both) movies, and one of my daughters does too. Please don't make him watch something scary because some of us internalize it too much, even though we know it's make-believe. We're rather misunderstood people, I'd say. Sorry to be a downer! :( Might he enjoy a funny movie more?
