Spider picture outside my kitchen window

My youngest grandaughter took this with her phone. It's a bit blurry. you can see the table and paper towels reflecting in the glass and other things too.

I should have taken the web down but we have enjoyed watching him catch his prey.

It was a very cool and rainy day yesterday.

Wow, another wonderful orb!!! We have a black and yellow as well, we enjoyed her all summer. She laid her eggs and they all appear to have hatched so I suspect that she has passed on, that sure is sad but she brought me a lot of joy this year.

odd for Imidacloprid to work as it is a strict insecticide and has no activity against arachnids whatsoever... maybe the carrier killed the mites? Mites do indeed seem to attack my favorite plants (palms) in low wind situations. My greenhouse is VERY humid and the plants are far from dessicated, but the mites still attack. My friends with more intelligently built greenhouses have large fans going all the time and that greatly reduces the spidermite problem. As for killing them, just about any product seems to work, so I use the safer ones. Gotta hit the leaves from all sides, though (most mites live on the leave's underside, where it is harder to spray). And once the damage is done, it stays that way, so you have to wait for the new leaves before the plant looks good again. No personal experience with mites on cacti... so can't comment there.

It's so hard when we lose one. I lost 2 in 2 yrs. Such a rough time. I used to live where we often had deer cross our land - and tons of snow. Somewhere I have pics of a maybe '78 major snow storm. It was half way up our patio door (that was up 3 steps from the ground). But now I'm in the SW - I won't post a pic. I do look out at some mountains in the distance. I don't mind seeing snow in pics tho!

"I have noticed little clumps of webs. Not spun from leaf to leaf but more like set up as little houses on the under sides of the leaves. I have noticed that one of the plants the leaves feel very dry, not dead, just dry, and have yellowish patches on them. Is this spider mites? There are some little holes on the leaves as well." Sounds like classic spider mite sign. If you can see the webbing, you have a large amount of spider mites, and they are moving to the next plant! Take the plant AWAY from any other plant, and treat those plants as if they are infected even if you didn't see any visible sign. This is the organic way- Clip off the branches with the webbing, toss in a sealed bag into your trash. Wash each remaining leaf and stem by hand with a bit of soap and lots of water. I'd pour slightly soapy water into the pot, too, for good measure. Keep quarantined from other plants, and I'd spray leaves with soapy water every other day for a week, then every few days for another week. Or you can use neem oil instead, but it has a rather offensive odor inside. Good luck!

Well we did get some freezing rain and I managed to drag the snow off the house roof around the vent not a big deal other than it was pretty wet. Then I pulled the snow off the carport but still no way to reach up on the garage. The up side is I can not walk on the snow I have pulled down off the carport and not need the ladder and hopefully I will be able to reach up higher as I pull more snow down. No more snow today other than the ice pellets that make a mess of everything. There is a 1/4 inch layer of ice on everything. Lots of melting going on on the roof but so far no slipping. Well maybe a couple of inches hanging over the edge. A good sign. Hoping the water run off means the snow is getting lighter. It is still 34 degrees right now!! 7:30PM. Not supposed to get cold tonight. Maybe 28. Still hoping for some sliding going on. Tomorrow another 3 to 5 inches coming at us. Really wondering when this is going to quit and give me a break. PHEW am I ever getting thin.

Oh, those spiders are so pretty and fascinating. And this coming from a professed arachniphobe! She is Argiope aurantia, one of the common orb weavers. They are often found outside windows or near porch lights.... they take advantage of the light to attract insects.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only weird one here. I had a spider on the sidelight outside my front door and got a kick out of watching it spinning from inside. Sadly, after a couple of weeks I was expecting some company and had to take it down.

And a fine looking spider he is! This year, I have not seen even one of these guys/gals. A lot of the usual 'bugs' have been few in number or absent in my gardens this summer. No japanese beetles to speak of (that was a blessing) and aphids weren't all that bad. So maybe the spiders didn't have enough to eat. We do have ample stinkbugs. Does anybody eat them?
