Trying to help a friend find a home for her cat...

If you know anyone in the "WV,NY,GA" corner of the country that could give a 12 year old cat a new home? A friend at school has been told by her pulmonologist that the cat HAS to go due to severe allergies/asthma.

found these guidelines...maybe give them a chance?

Cat owners may not want to part with their pets, despite the symptoms they endure. Short of getting rid of the cat, here are some ways to decrease cat allergen exposure for cat owners:

Ã¢ÂÂ¢Ensure the cat is neutered
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Bathing the cat at least once or twice a week
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Wiping the cat with a wet cloth or hand towel daily
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Remove the cat from the bedroom, close the bedroom door and air vents to the bedroom
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Keep the cat outside or in the garage, or in a part of the home with an uncarpeted floor
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Vacuum frequently with a HEPA-equipped vacuum cleaner
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Purchase a HEPA room air cleaner for use in the bedroom and/or other parts of the home (it is best to keep the HEPA filter off of the floor so as to not stir up more dust)
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Follow house dust mite avoidance precautions
Ã¢ÂÂ¢If the above measures do not help to reduce allergic symptoms, getting rid of the pet cats may be needed, particularly for people with uncontrolled asthma.
Ã¢ÂÂ¢Cat dander will persist for months to years in the home even if the cat is gone Ã¯Â¿Â½Ã¯Â¿Â½" therefore it is important to clean thoroughly
Ã¢ÂÂ¢steam clean all carpets and upholstered furniture
Ã¢ÂÂ¢launder or dry clean all bedding and curtains
Ã¢ÂÂ¢vacuum all hard floors
Ã¢ÂÂ¢wipe down all hard surfaces and furniture
Ã¢ÂÂ¢replace any air conditioner and heater vent filters

I was fortunate in that my Mom did not show signs of violent behavior. The wandering was bad enough while she was still able to walk. I think your friend needs to rethink taking care of her Mom. If she finds it hard now, it is only going to get worse. Much worse! As you know I was the sole caregiver to my sweet Mom for over 10 years and I would never ever put myself in that role again and my Mom was a dear gentle patient. Your friend's life will change forever if she takes this challenge on. You become an appendage of the person you are caring for because as the dementia progresses you have to do everything for that person. My Aunt was the violent type, my sweet gentle religious Aunt turned into a rabid animal locked in a cage. Swearing, hurting my Uncle, telling lies that almost put my Uncle in jail. My Aunt paced, back and forth. She wouldn't sit to eat, sleep. She walked and walked and ranted. She would get out of the house and walk into a neighbours house and act like it was her home and not theirs. Even after my Uncle put her in a nursing home she never found peace until she died. That is what Alzheimer's did to her. As someone above said, get the Alzheimer Society involved. They will send out a case worker but first your friend's Mom needs to be assessed by a Doctor. There could be something else that is causing her violent dementia. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't hesitate to put my Mom into care and as I said I had it easy until my Mom got cancer and I had to give her insulin shots but taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer's will suck the life blood out of you. 8 years since my Mom passed away and I am still trying to find out who I am and to put my care taking in the past and not let it define me anymore. I must say though after the first couple of years of taking care of my Mom I became a better person and had to let go of the anger I was feeling at having to give up my life as I knew it, my savings, dating life, getting married, having kids because I chose to do this. I learned to be happy because I knew if I wasn't happy I would be in H'll on Earth. Alzheimer's in a terrible disease, much more terrible for the person that is doing the care giving than the one who suffers from it. I hope your friend gets some help for herself and her Mom sooner than later. Anne

Thanks for all the good info. It will help. The dogs, and the owner, are in Arkansas; her son is in Mississippi, and I am in North Dakota, trying to "help." He is busy between taking care of his wife's medical (lymphoma) needs, his mother's medical (many issues and some dementia) needs, and his jobs. I wanted to help by finding info about placements for the dogs. He will be the one working with his mother to allow them to be placed once I find good places. EmmaR and Alisande - that link is one of the groups I've sent a letter to. They were helpful and sent me links to two GS rescue groups near my friend's son. Woodie2 - I noticed all the groups in California. It's so sad that people get "a cute puppy" having no clue what dog ownership means and the differences in all the breeds. Hi KimOkla - I will contact that group, too. WildChild and NoDakGal - Thanks for the info; I'm putting it in my address book for future reference. Since the dogs are in Arkansas I'm trying to find something closer to the son. Vicki7 and Alisande - Thanks for posting. I'm not on Facebook, and never, ever will be, but I do appreciate your caring enough to help, too. I did ask my vet, but the desk staff didn't have any info. Since Harry and Sam have financed at least two of their kids' college educations, LOL, he should have offered to adopt them himself. (In my not-so-humble opinion! LOL) We will work this problem until we have safe, caring homes for these two dogs. It will be the type of home where I, the son, or my brothers can check on them whenever we feel the need. I also expect to help cover at least some of the dogs' expenses.

Wow lots of heated opinions! But thanks for sharing them! It's interesting to hear all the different thought processes. Olychic: Ouch! We are very good friends, I just tend to overthink things! And I'm also just ridiculously curious about how people think so it's sort of fun for me to hear all the different opinions. :) But I am super glad I just went with my gut. Anyway I just wanted to update you all. It all worked out much easier than anticipated. I asked her how the project was going and that got her talking about how the ID is now delaying the project by quite a bit and blaming her for bad communication....(smh) Anyway turns out she's already having second thoughts, so I didn't really need to say much. I just mostly agreed with her and threw in a couple of ideas too. She's going to try to somehow renegotiate. Hopefully it goes well! I'm grateful to everyone who posted. Thank you!

The bottom line is that there will always be both predators and prey in all living things. If we use good sense we do what we can to not become prey. There is healthy fear and unhealthy fear. Believing that crime lurks around every corner that mass media and social media promotes is unhealthy fear. This would include the nonsense that all men are potential rapists, women are approaching strangers in stores and malls to lure them into human trafficking, any stranger who smiles or speaks to you is a threat etc. That unhealthy fear will eventually make one prey. The relatively few true predators out there will always be able to pick the weak out of the herd. Unhealthy fear is weakness. Healthy fear is knowing that there are some bad people and things in the world. Healthy fear is being aware of your surroundings. It is locking your doors and taking normal precautions. Healthy fear is Not because you expect to become a victim but because you are realistic enough to understand that bad things happen. Healthy fear is taking preventative measures but never allowing fear to paralyze you from enjoying life. I part company with Elmer when it comes to dives versus nice establishments. The restaurant //hospitality trade has always been rife with corruption on many levels and it is not just the customers. From back door street drug dealing by cooks and local "thugs" in the local dives to women, kink, designer drugs and other services etc. in high end establishments often frequented by the wealthy many of who are politicians or the owners of the high end places themselves. Raye Smith made a lot of good points. The examples cited in the OP were annoying behaviors but nothing criminal. Paranoia is not healthy fear and I think Kath realizes that herself. She just needs to work on getting past that and devise a system to help her DD gain the skills of surviving the life of a young adult. The world is no less safe than it ever was. But for some reason we have become a fear drive society. We tend to divide people by gender, sex and race making shard human issues and threats more difficult to solve. On the other hand we blend criminal statistics into one big ball of fear without dividing them properly into their sub groups so we can view them in clear perspective and determine where and if the real threats are to ourselves. New age feminists refuse to acknowledge that a young women having a consensual 3 way with guys in front of their friends is not in a good position to say no to the 4th guy. Being drunk doesn't absolve one of responsibility no matter if you are a man or a woman. If you want respect as an equal then act and take responsibility as an equal. Only Kath's DD can make the decision to stay or leave her job. But if she does stay it can be a positive opportunity for her to learn how to deal with people and become mentally tougher which is a good life lesson for all to have.

Good suggestions from Susanjf. Also Allerpet-C is recommended by many vets.

It would be such a shame to have to separate a 12-year-old cat from its human. Very hard on both.

Thanks for the suggestions. She has a new "allergy" filter and is keeping the dander down by wiping her down each day while everyone tries to find a new home.

This has been something she has been trying to work through for a while but all remedies have not worked.

I cannot imagine what she is going through with all of this. I have only had to give away one cat- he was killing all the critters in a 1-block radius of the house. He gave him to a farm with a mouse problem. He cleared out their mice and then moved to the next farm. According to the vet tech who adopted him from us, he was happy and fat (and apparently a born mouser), lol.

My heart really goes out to your friend, Janie, how hard that must be. Often it is the cat's saliva that causes the allergy, I guess there is no hope that she can keep him?

Some are just killing machines, aren't they? We have our pool drained down ready to put the safety cover on and this morning one of the ferals went in it after a mouse he was chasing! He was walking on the solar cover, the cat soon discovered he was getting wet feet and abandoned his prey.

Ugh. What a situation to be put into. I browse the local humane society web site every day and my heart breaks for the senior pets sitting in the cubicles with the most lost look on their faces. I want to bring them all home, if only I was rich. But at least the owner or the owner's family make an effort to place the dog/cat where there may be a chance it finds a home instead of just turning it out. :(

Thanks for the good thoughts. No luck so far. I am not sure how long she can do what she is doing... asthma attacks are bad! Keep her in your thoughts and I will keep you posted.
