Just curious, it that the only reason? Where are you moving from? Check out not only RE, but medical, shopping and weather. Do you have children also and/or would your sister's children help if you needed them. Just a few things to check on before you make the move.

Marie... thank you for replying. our children are grown and military families, not stationed near us any more. So i have no children here to help us. Yes, my nephews would help us if we needed and were near them. I have other family there, aunts and cousins and their families, and old friends from my school days.
We are in central Virginia now. My DH has been wanting to move out of Virginia for a long time,but we were not able to consider that until we retired. Kentucky will give us a good break on state taxes on our government retirement annuities. We have seen some affordable houses there on internet realty sites. I have a nephew in Murray who will look for us a rental house. We are thinking that renting for a few months would give us an idea if that is where we want to be. As for medical, etc.... that is a big consideration. and there are good facilities in Nashville, Paducah etc. I grew up in that area of the state, it has just been many many years since I have lived there. Just wanted other's thoughts. Not planning to do anything hasty . thank yo uagain

I'm in northwest KY, along the Ohio River. Real estate in this area is very affordable. We are not too far from Louisville or Nashville.

Nancy... my sister lives in Madisonville, in Hopkins county, about 40 miles or so from Evansville IN. Nephew is in Benton, near Land Between the Lakes. He says there are some incredible buys down there now, in real estate. He is a little out in the country, but says they are near good medical facilities, shopping etc/ I am thinking it might just be nice to "go home again" after all these years.

The weather is hot and humid during the months of July and August. The winter is mlder than the northern tier of states. It does have a winter. Winter snows melt faster than states north of there. Most snows are gone in a week or less. The worst might be an ice storm in January. Spring begins early and lasts for 2 months, a avery enjoyable time of the year.

The KY side of the Ohio river is a flood plane. Near Evansville, IN, it extends for several miles southward from the river. South of Henderson, there were tall slender poles along the edge of the road rightaway. These are markers for boats and water fording vehicles during flood times.

The land-between-the-lakes is park and recreational land. When I was there 20 yrs ago, a speed limit of 45 mph was posted for the entire area, lower limits may be posted in places. Its a slow trip to travel from the north end to the south end. One should consult building code and historical restrictions before buying a home there. Also, this land is flat with little interest except for trees.

Last month, I was in Graves Co., KY, doing genealogical research for my family roots. Graves Co has enough roll to the landscape to add a bit of interest.

My pick for a retirement place is eastern TN or SW North Carolina. The NC location was picked based mostly on year around weather: far enough away from the coast to avoid the brunt of hurricanes, high enough altitude for night time cooling. The extreme western tip of NC is economically depressed and I would not consider going there. The western-most point for consideration in NC is Franklin.

Important considerations for retirees are: Doctors, dentists, internet access at reasonable speed, A choive of TV stations, an easy listening radio station, and grocery stores and services within walking distance of your house; and availability of fuel for cooking and heating. A number of otherwise lovely locations do not have natural gas. The primary fuel is then butane/propane and oil, and that can get expensive in winter. Also, there is the fuss of maintaining a storage tank on the property. Shortage of fuel can happen in midwinter.

jemdandy.... thank you for your information. I grew up in Hopkins county, about 50 miles south of Evansville. Left there when i was 19. It has been many years since i lived there, and only visit every few years. I think the weather is about what we have here in central Va. Well, except for the hurricanes. I know is not the most beautiful place, the only reason we are considering is i have extensive family there. And the state will give us a considerable break when taxing our fed govt annuities. Nephew in the Murray area, near Land between the lakes, assures me there are good medical facilities around there. Not sure about HS internet, but that is important too. We had been thinking sw NC too, like the area, just don't know anyone there, and they do not give the break on taxes i think. Western TN is beautiful, but expensive near Asheville. Also looking at SC, around Greenville. Know anything about that area? Daughter in Charleston, be we know we cannot afford that area. We are thinking of renting an apartment in KY for a couple months, to give us an idea if we really want to relocate there.
