Yes, by the hem is how I usually do it. Always get those little clothes pin indentations on the corners tho. I've used hangers before too, but put a clothespin on the hook of the hanger (part that goes over the line) to keep the wind from blowing them off the line. Those thick plastic hangers will help keep the shoulders looking smoother but not completely depending upon the material of the shirt.

By the hem, on the rare occasion I hang outside anymore. DH hung them by the shoulder seams because he says hanging by the hem makes them stretch out.

I'd never hung anything outside for 37 years of marriage--we live in the suburbs, the air is filthy, clothes would come in dirtier than they were before you washed them, if I hung wash there. But at the country house? The air is so clean, I've been hanging everything out--on the deck (it has a roof so rain isn't even a problem, other than it making the drying take longer).

Anyway, I don't like hanging by the hem because you end up getting a very oddly configured hem that way. Having clothes dip down at the sides and arch up in the middle is a great way to make yourself look fat(ter). I hang rightside out, from the shoulder seams and they come out great, not misshapen.

A couple of years ago our dryer died in the summer, so I started hanging clothes outside, my kids were amazed, they had never seen it done--other than in the movies!! I hang my t-shirts by the hem, and usually tried to share a pin with the shirt next to it. There is nothing like sheets that have been dried on the line, no fabric softener can make up for the scent of real sunshine and fresh air.

I fold them about 4 inches from the hem, that way they don't stretch...

I really enjoy hanging out clothes and I have done it all summer.I hang tee shirts by the hem. Since the fresh air is free it sure saves on the electric bill.

I'm probably the only one that hates the feel of air dried clothes. If I can help it I don't hang them out. I don't even like to hang my towels out to dry.

I didn't have a dryer until my third child was about 3.That was 1972.I always loved hanging my clothes outside.When that child was a baby he wore cloth diapers.I had about 6 dozen gauze diapers and didn't do laundry but once a week or however long the diapers lasted so I always had 3 lines of diapers only.My neighbors on both sides commented several times on how white the diapers were.I sure don't ever want to do that again even thought it made my day for someone to comment on the white diapers.LOL
I guess I'm the odd one with t shirts.I always folded them over the line just under the underarm and put a clothes pin on each side. That keeps the hem straight and any wrinkle from the clothes pin is under the arm.I still hang my T's on a plastic hanger on a clothes rack to dry.

I love the smell of clothes that are hung
outside to dry. The sad part is I am asthmatic
and cannot hang them outside.

I do it quite often, although not as much as I should. I always turn the clothes inside out or hang the sheets/blankets over the line so the bottom side is exposed to the sun and they don't get sunbleached. Like Clairdo, I hang shirts by folding over about 2 inches from the bottom.

I do hang sweaters and my wool socks over a dryer rack inside the house all the time.

Twice today I came around the corner of the shed that is in front of the clothesline and was startled by the jeans hanging there. I had to duck to get under and felt like I should say "excuse me."

I like lillipad's idea of putting the clothes pin under the arm seam.

The one thing you may have forgotten is to wipe the clothes line before using. If you have a metal line, inspect while wiping for any corrosion spots. Metal corrosion will mark the laundry and it is almost a permanent stain. If you have a non-metallic line, wipe it anyway. You need to get the collection of outside dirt and bird droppings off the line before using.

Give the clothes a good shake-out before you hang them, too. It'll help get wrinkles out before the air can set them in. Hold the shirt or whatever by the hem and shake it well, give it a good SNAP, and then hang it up to dry. I love hanging clothes on the line!

I fold over about 3/4 of the sleeve (and top) of the T-shirt over the line and pin on the lower part of the sleeve seam.

I always bounce mine for just a few minutes after I bring them in from the line. We have alot of No-seeums here and maaaaany years ago, my DH was a little miffed when he had some in his boxers! LOL So now I bounce. This year we have had soooo many Cicada's...and found a couple in my dryer lint trap!!! (dead, thankfully!)

I'll bet your house smells wonderful after bringing in all those freshly dried clothes!! I wish I had a clothesline!! I hang our blankets and comforters over the deck the smell is heavenly!

Hang T's and shirts from bottom hem, T's near edge, and shirts at bottom of side seams. T's and briefs alternating, with back seam of brief overlapping hem of T.

Hang pants, jeans from the back waist, usually using 4 pins over the back pockets.

Socks by the toe.

Sheets folded over, to hang down equidistant on each side.

Towels hung from end, or maybe three or four inches hung over (if you'll pardon the expression) ... not too far, or it'll take them too long to dry, if they're the terry kind.

How about this--DS lives in a "planned community" which has very strict regulations governing the development. No clothes on the line! I think that's just wrong.
