I go away this weekend with 10 girls to Traverse City, Michigan. We stay at Sugar loaf Ski Resort. One of the girls family owns a condo so we stay for free. We go to casino,a local small bar, Winery Tour, play games, shop and gab. I will be gone 4 days. I CAN'T WAIT!! I made a "special" new drink for a night we stay in and play games. Thought I would share the recipe for the new drink I made. I just had a little glass of it and it taste just like a piece of Apple Pie.

Apple pie Shots/drink

INGREDIENTS

Â 1 gallon apple juice

Â 1 gallon apple cider

Â 3 cups white sugar

Â 8 cinnamon sticks

Â 1 (750 milliliter) bottle 151 proof grain alcohol

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot, combine apple juice, apple cider, sugar and cinnamon sticks. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let cool completely. I let it boil a little longer so it thicken up a bit.

2. When juice mixture is cool, Stir in the grain alcohol.

3. Store in glass bottles in Refrigerator

Judy, Wow!!! a four day all girl slumber party!!!! That's going to be so much fun!!! Your apple pie drink sounds delicious. I hope y'all have a great time.

At this time of the year I will let my feeders go 4 to 5 days-especially since I do not even have any birds yet. As long as it is in the 50 to 60+ degree daytime temperature range that is very safe. Some people go longer than that-but I never do. I must say that in July and August when we are in the 90 degree range I change my feeders daily. I do not have many shady places for my feeders so it is a must for me to change daily. I will have a total of seven feeders up in late may on to the end of the season, because I have so many birds feeding and most are very territorial. Believe me it is a chore to change 7 feeders daily-but well worth it as my feeders are so popular. If you have just a couple of favorite hummingbird plants(butterfly bush or quince or trumpet vine) you are very much more likely to have hummers. If you have some good plants for them they WILL find your feeders. May you have a yardfull this year! Vicki

barb_roselover_in- You will feel better as soon as you eliminate wheat completely, not just "watch" consumption. There's just not an up-side to eating less compared to eliminating it. Here's a simple option, eat a few plain corn tortilla chips (made without wheat flour) with your soup and chili instead of crackers. Even better, make or buy corn tortillas and cut them into strips/squares/wedges and bake them to make them even lower in sodium and fat. You can also use corn tortillas to make an individual pizza, or use as a wrap.... Do you have a health food store or a "health food/natural food" section in a store with gluten-free items in it? Even our Wal-Mart in this one-horse town has a nice selection of g-f items. The good news, the longer you are off wheat products, the less you find you "need" some food items like you did the wheat-containing versions, like crackers. Wheat is so addictive..... When we first went g-f, I made all kinds of substitutes, but I find I just don't need them now. Break the addiction and break the need for these empty calories. You really can eat soup without crackers. Make your own crackers with almond flour, and I would suggest that over buying g-f brands that are made with high-glycemic g-f flours and starches that raise blood sugar. But saying that, Glutino is a brand you may want to try. I tasted some at a friend's and think they are gritty (a common texture from rice flour) and taste like old-fashioned water crackers, not saltines. One cracker was more than enough, and I wouldn't waste my money on them. Van's Say Cheese! Crackers are a tasty little snack cracker with a slight edge on nutrition, lower in carbs and sodium than most - but a bit high priced. Hubby bought some as a treat for the Super Bowl. Interestingly enough, we ate our homemade potato chips and tortilla chips with some homemade bean dip and salsa and not many of the expensive Van's crackers. Mary's Gone Cracker's are a seedy cracker I sometimes buy to use when traveling. We'll spread peanut butter on them for a snack or emergency "lunch" when traveling. I know how you feel! Fortunately my kids don't need formal wear often, but I had the hardest time outfitting my son for the few Bar Mitzvahs he attended when he was 13. At the time, I was fortunate that I was able to find almost everything at Old Navy (online -- I just end up ordering a few sizes and then returning what doesn't fit to the store). I still get his black dress pants and white shirts for school band concerts at Old Navy. I'm not investing a lot of money in dress clothes until he stops growing! I think he's almost there, at age 18 and 6'2". Now we're coming up against the same thing with DD, who is 12 and starting to get the Bat Mitzvah invites from classmates at school (we are not Jewish, but we seem to be invited to far more Jewish events than Christian events!). Fortunately, we knew about one that is coming up this weekend all the way back in the spring, so over the summer I bought her two dresses. Both are pretty blue lace dresses, one short sleeved and one 3/4 sleeved, just above knee length. We kept them both because we know she'll be invited to at least a few of these events. One dress was from Boden (kids) catalog and one was from Lands End, believe it or not. One problem we will have is that I think DD is going to top out at 5' tall and she's very slim, too, so she's going to wearing little-kid sizes for a long time yet. I am so glad she's not into the trashy look. She mostly wears skinny jeans, t-shirts, and hoodies. I see what some tweens are wearing around town and cringe. Hello, aren't the mothers still in charge of what clothes girls can buy when they're 12? Okay, my rant is over.

I am in a similar situation except maybe a bit more complicated, who knows! I understand. Either way, you have to be understanding to all sides of the story, including that she is their mother and may not like you being a part of the children's lives like you want. But, if you and your man are going to make it work, eventually they will have to get to know you. As far as him...I understand that the way he is trying to deal with everything in his head is the right way (which it's not, but to him it is...for now), and you can't make him change. He needs to realize himself...that although it will be hard (more than hard or a bump in the road), that if it's you he wants to be with, he needs to focus on getting himself together as an individual and take a chance in not living with the children and realize he can have both, maybe not exactly how he wants...but it's a compromise. Basically, he has some things to figure out (and so do you). Will you always want to have to deal with his ex and everything that comes with her? Nomatter how much it seems like everything is in place, he is not...none of you are. It does take a toll on the children and I understand he wants to see them everyday and be in the same house and help financially, but where do each of you want to be next year...or say in 5 years? How long can this go on? I hope that it works out and soon. Believe me, I am not judging, just giving you things to think about that I know I have. I am only 23 but I feel I've been through quite a bit for my age. My man and I have been together off and on for 5 years, he is 33. Within those 5 years we have had other partners, he has gotten a divorce, had 3 children, I moved away and came back, and now he lives with his ex-wife...all the while she's known about me and wants me to have nothing to do with the children. Things have come a long way. We plan to get married and have children of our own and even move in soon, but with all the rollercoaster action in our past, we want to make sure everything is right before going to the next step. He is figuring out his life and so am I so we can become a union and bring God in our relationship.

Discovered this one last year, and WOW delicious!

Caramel Apple Cocktail

6 servings
1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
1 lemon wedge
1 1/2 cups apple cider
6 tablespoons butterscotch schnapps
1 (750 ml) bottle sparkling wine, chilled
6 maraschino cherries

*After dipping the glasses in the cinnamon, I put them in the freezer to chill

Spread cinnamon sugar onto a small plate or saucer. Run the lemon wedge along the rim of 6 champagne glasses, then dip the rims into the cinnamon sugar.
Combine apple cider and schnapps in a measuring cup.
Divide evenly among prepared glasses. Divide sparkling wine among glassses.
Garnish with cherry.

Judy that sounds like so much fun. It'd be fun for a bunch of us to meet somewhere like that and have a get together, or weekend meet. My sister does that with a group of gals on her forum. They usually go to the East Coast somewhere.

Oooh..they do sound good. DIL to be is having her bridal party and us moms over for a bbque and drinks in a few weeks to help wrap the table favors for the reception tables. I may just make one of for the night!

The apple pie sounds good this time of year. My sister used to make peppermint patties that were also very good. Hot chocolate topped off with creme de menthe and whipped cream. Mom used to make "pink reindeer" drinks. I think they had red Hawaiian punch, orange juice, pineapple juice, and ginger ale. No booze for the kiddies but some kind of booze for the adults but I don't remember what kind. They were topped with whipped cream, shaved nuts, and a cherry. They looked beautiful.

Dotmom used to make a wonderful shaved ice daquiri-type drink with pineapple.
