I'm thinking about getting a Discover card and am wondering what others think of it ?

I have a Visa check card and Visa Credit card. I use the credit card for groceries, gas, etc. The Visa card is for any other larger purchases such as a computer, furniture, clothing, etc. Don't fly, so air miles aren't a factor. I pay the balance off each month.

I pay all my utilities etc with automatic withdrawal. If I get the Discover card I would use that for paying those, and get back a few dollars.

Is it worth it?

Hi Sue,

My Discover card is my main card, and seldom ever use anything else. I like it because I have it set up to take the minimum amount due out of my checking automatically, and then I can mail in the remainder, or call in and pay the balance over the phone. I never mean to ever carry a balance, but sometimes I just miss getting the balance taken care of. That is my assurance that it is never late. Having the pay by phone is especially nice if the due date happens to sneak up on me when I'm living life in the fast lane. All other places charge extra to make a pay by phone...about 14.95 I think on most of them.

I never have had a problem with them, but if I happen to call with a question, they are always helpful, respond in a fairly timely manner, and are courteous.

I have a Discover card and haven't had any problems with it. I initiated payments online, and when I called customer service in regards to another matter they were very helpful.

The only thing I don't like about it is that the cash back bonuses need to be redeemed in $20 increments. I stopped using it as my main card and have an $11 bonus that I can't access unless I start using the card enough again in order to get the bonus up to at least $20. I got this card a few years ago, so the redemption policy may be different from what your offer is.

I've been using the American Express Blue Cash card as my main credit card, and they automatically credit your account once a year for the amount of your cash back bonus for the year. I would look at the terms of the bonus and my anticipated spending level to see if a particular card would work for my needs.

Many times the cash advance carries a charge of 3% of the transaction, up to a certain amount (often it is $70 I believe), whichever is less. Does it carry a cash advance fee? Have you read the terms? I cannot really believe it would be for $36,000, for 13 months. Sometimes the available credit is divided into 2 different amounts...part is available for cash advances, and the other part is available for purchaces. Have you read all the fine print? Also, they can raise the interest from 0% to whatever, if at anytime in that 13 months that you are late paying for 'anything' and they get wind of it. They will be requiring you to make minumum monthly payment on it for 13 months too, won't they? Keep us informed please. I got 5,000 on cash advance (no transfer fee) for 1 year. Right now the min pay is for $60, but I have it set up to automatically take the minimun plus $250 each month from my checking. B4 the year is up, I imagine I will have another similar offer from another company in hand, and will use it to finish paying this one off. In the meantime, I keep getting these checks for the company I have the 5,000 borrowed from. They think I will weaken, and use them, and then whatever I buy, I will pay interest on until after the 0% part is paid off. They always apply the payment to the portion of the bill carrying the lowest interest rate. If I don't have a super offer handy when the end of the 0% draws near, I can always use the already approved line of credit home equity loan at my bank. I got approved about 3 years ago, and haven't used it yet. Once another super totally free offer comes along, I'll then use the cr cd free interest money to pay off the home equity loan. Sue

It happened to DW with our Debit credit card. We bank on line and pay 95% of our bills using on line banking. She notice a $20.00 purchase that we didn't make and notified the bank. The bank representitave told her that it was a good thing that we don't leave money in our checking account and that our over draft was maxed (Thanks to remodeling) They tried to make large pruchases from on line sites like Target, QVC, JC Penney's and Best Buy. Had we not picked up on this when we did they could have cleaned us out because the next day both our pay checks would have been directly deposited into the checking account. The bank credited our account $20 that day. Since then we now have our pay checks deposited into the saving account and tranfer it to checking as we need it. The odd thing about this is that we never use this account for online shopping. I think you stand bigger chance of fraud when using the credit card in a store rather then on line. DW set up our account so that we are alerted to any purchase made over $15. The alert message goes directly to her Blackberry so no matter where we are we are protected.

arkansas_girl, and I only say this because I care, they have decaffeinated brands now that taste just as good as regular! :) lydia1959, While they don't carry Fritos® *brand*, they do carry corn chips, their generic/store brand is Clancy's. And no they don't carry Diet Rite® brand cola, again, they have their own diet cola. They have very few brand name items however quite regularly have Oscar Meyer® bacon, Miracle Whip® salad dressing and a few other name brands at times but the whole point of the store is that about 95% of the products are generic/store brands. One rep said they will get a brand name if they can't get the quality or price they want or they just won't carry it. They guarantee the items so if you don't like it, they'll refund your money and replace the item on most items. Since you want brand name items, discount stores like these are not for you. I've found some of their products to be better than brand names, most are equal to and a few are not as good IMO. But I'm not a brand-loyal person on too many things so I find Aldi and the comparable type stores to be great. Keep in mind the average Aldi carries about 1400 SKUs so they're obviously not going to have as big an assortment of major things. They also go for items they get the right price and the right quality so produce can be hit and miss. Aldi is a store you shop first then go to another store to pick up the things like zucchini. Onions will vary. Sometimes they'll have red but sometimes they'll have white or yellow. Again, it varies. If you want a *guarantee* they'll have a particular type, then it's not for you. But then, no store can guarantee it! LOL (I see more out of stocks and perpetual OOSs at Malwart than any other store.) I'm surprised about the salsa. Around here they always have it and it's usually in the aisle as you come into the store, by the chips. Casa Mamita is their brand name, however if you're going to look for a variety of "heat" and a variety of flavor, don't expect it. Generally they carry one of each types. Green onions are hit and miss. Generally I think it's because they spoil quite quickly so I seldom see them there. Shredded cheese is in the cooler, most stores it's against the back wall with salads, sausage, milk, eggs, sour cream, etc. You need to get used to what they *have*, and know they will *not* have 50,000 to 80,00 SKUs as a large grocery store nor 100,000+ SKUs like a super center to cover all needs. (In fact, that's one of their advertising bits You don't have to search through aisles of camping gear to find your ketchup.) Nor will a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods for that matter. People that shop these stores realize they're not going to get *everything* in one stop. They're specialty stores. Whole Foods for "natural" stuff, TJ's for yuppy stuff and Aldi for low priced staples. I'm not surprised you didn't find green onions, red onion, zucchini and canned green chiles. They do carry a substitute "Rotel" tomato and chilis though. And of course your brand names are pretty much a given, though they do carry diet cola and corn chips, though not the flavor you were looking for. Frankly you could simplify your trip for those two things by picking them up when you get gas and you're not really doing an additional store. Most gas stations carry Diet Rite and Fritos. I'm very surprised you didn't find salsa and shredded cheese. I take it you didn't ask someone about it? I started making a list of things they have that I would buy. I check my Aldi List before going there, then do an Aldi trip. Although I pretty much do the same for any other store. I keep a price log so I know which stores have better prices on certain things. Keep in mind, Aldi is about a 10,000 square foot store with about 1400 SKUs as mentioned. They cannot physically carry the variety an 80,000 sq ft common grocery store would nor a 130,000-150,000 sq ft "super store". Their model is to carry bargain basics and some special things. An air conditioner for $60, cast iron pans for $30 and under, flash drives cheap, lawn chairs, and more. But they won't have it all the time. I consider it garage sale shopping in that you never know for sure what you can get, just like I experience at Malwart for that matter! LOL All stores run out. Not all stores carry "everything". They can't. No one store is for everyone, that's why there's so many. And as I mentioned earlier, rumor has it that Aldi gets its pop/soda from Dr Pepper Snapple Group, who make Diet Rite. Can't verify this yet, but wouldn't surprise me. BTW, while they don't carry a 100' aisle of various breads, they carry white, wheat, a few buns, and they also have a 12 grain bread that I really like and it's about $1.69. Considering the comparable bread at any other store is $3-$4 there's times I'll make a stop just for a few things that they have that I like better or save me lot. I don't like having to stop at multiple stores to get what I want, but unfortunately these days it's nearly a requirement. I can't get decent produce at a Walmart here, they just don't have it in stock or the quality is SO poor I wouldn't feed it to farm animals. (They don't get anything locally.) Cub and Rainbow are hit and miss. When Aldi has produce, I've had 95% good luck with the quality and of course the prices are substantially less. I got used to the Aldi concept long before Aldi came into this area. We had a store called Save-A-Lot owned by Nash Finch and it basically was the same concept. No frills, bag your own, store brand mostly and closeouts/special purchases. Again, not the place to buy everything but a great place to save money. I was saddened to see them close but I understand when they saw Aldi moving in, they gave up and closed the doors.

I see bag bans as feel good legislation. Like others have said people still litter. Actually see people toss the bags they have just purchased in the parking lot. Why pay for a bag to take to your vehicle and then leave it behind on the ground? Litter is a huge issue to me. The same stores that require one to purchase a bag (for the environment) don't seem to take the time or bother to empty their trash receptacles outside their doors. They are always overflowing with trash scattered about them. In the wee hours crews come through with leaf blowers and a vacuum truck. By the time the store opens the parking lots are already littered again. Shopping carts seem to be never washed. Many "shoppers" uses them as trash bin while they stuff their and their kids faces. What they can't take one hour to shop without drinking and eating? The kids some as 10 ride in the food area of the cart. With dirty clothes and shoes. Same people don't allow shoes in their homes but they are fine with shoes in the food cart. We don't have a bag problem. We have a PIG problem. Self-centered, self-entitled people who have zero respect for the others around them. Snidely and I live in the same general area if not the same city. Our county is a pigsty. Litter and discards along all the main roadways. Now we also have homeless encampments encroaching on the suburbs. Piles of trash and, mattresses, old sofas etc. right at the roadside. But out elected officials are too busy trying to figure out what their next ban should be over fixing the existing problems. We are supposed to be proud to have the strictest bag ban in the state. However our once potentially beautiful city looks like a third world country with its litter problem. No one addresses the blight.

We have the Discover gas card, we get 5 percent back on gas purchases, up to $100.00 worth of gas monthly. We pay it in full each month, so it works for us.

We have had a Discover Card for years and years. It is our primary card and we use it for everything. Also have several bills that are paid automatically by the discover card. Just about everyone takes discover. Our cash back builds up fast. We now have over $300 in reward money. We have never paid interest on any card so I think it is wonderful to get at least some money back on the things we purchase.

I have Discover as my main credit card. I like the rewards. I recently got a $45 gift certificate for Macy's, my favorite dept store. Also, when I lost my purse, Discover gave me $100 to buy a new one. Good deal, IMHO. I don't use my Discover to pay other bills. I use it for groceries, gas, gift shopping,etc.

We had one a few yrs ago. Cash back was ok but what we noticed was that we started receiving loads of phone calls. We are on the Don't call list but still received them. Cancelled the card and the phone calls stopped. We might have overlooked something to get the calls to stop. We just went back to MC and we can still get cash back as well as gift cards and extras with the point system. We don't pay bills with it but put everything else on it and pay it off every month. Just check out the fine print or try it if you don't like it you can always just stop using it.

Like I said I have had Discover card for years (1982) we have never had any unsolicited calls since we went on the Do Not Call List. Discover has always been great on any disputes we have had. We also have a MC but only use it if someone doesn't take the Discover Card.

I also love my Discover card. I've had it well over 20 years and I have always been happy with the customer service; I call every year and remind them I want to pay the lowest rate possible and they lower it right away. I don't think I've paid over 10% for years now. I have had to dispute one charge recently (a cancelled conference had not returned my deposit) and they took care of immediately. They have always been good in my opinion.

I have had my Discover card since the early 80s, and I love it.
Never carry a balance, so I know nothing of the interest rates.
Never got calls from them, either.

The cash back bonus is great - got $80 worth this month alone which, when converted to gift cards, can be worth between $100 and $160 of FREE things!

I've had Discover for years and I love it! One caveat-it's not accepted everywhere. Most places yes, but once in a while I find somewhere that doesn't take it.

Plus it's easy to remember their phone number (1-800-DISCOVER)

This is very helpful to hear that the satisfaction rating is so good. I've been to the Discover Web site and I have two ads that came with the newspapers. I see there are several choices to choose from so that takes some thinking, but it seems in my case the Pay On Time is the best.

One thing I'm curious about is if I change over to paying all my bills (monthly expenses) with the card, does that count as "purchases"? And how
do you actually get the cash back? Does it show up as a credit on your balance?

Discover is the only credit card I use. Actually I have two of them. One is the gas card to get 5% back and the other is for normal purchases. I just got the new card and called to activate it. You talk to people in Utah. I've had it since they came out. They used to be Shopper's Charge.

You can choose from different options on the cash back. I just go for cash rather than air miles, double credit at certain stores, etc. It's credited to an escrow monthly and when you reach $20 you can have it credited to the account, which is what I do, or get it direct deposited to your bank account or a check mailed to you. There's other options too. I keep it simple, apply the credit when I can.

I use it for bill paying and yes you get credit since it's a purchase. Paypal purchases charged to it qualify for the credit too. I pay my phone bill with Discover card and get the credit. I pay online as many bills as possible. Anything that gets charged gets the cashback bonus. However, and rightly so, refunds are deducted.

I've had terrific service from Discover. There's been several times they've contacted me when there was suspicious activity. They caught Target charging me for a computer I didn't purchase and they took care of it and it never even showed on my account. There was another time when they caught someone trying to charge to my account. They've really been on top of things for me.

I did have a problem for a while where I didn't get the bills. I called them and they credited me the late fees and interest and admitted they had been having problems with lost/misdirected mail. What more can you ask for?

It's also such a relief when you do need to call, to know you'll be able to understand the person you're talking to!

Very, very few places will not take Discover, and I won't shop anyplace that doesn't when they take credit cards. There's no reason to not take it. I've been in business so I know some of the scams certain outfits are putting out there.
