I cooked this weekend!!

I know that doesn't sound like hot news to most of you, but I rarely cook anything interesting just for myself. I miss cooking for my family, so when my daughter said we'd celebrate her birthday at her house, I said I'd bring the meal.

I made her favorite Greek pastitsio (layers of ziti and meat in a cinnamon-flavored tomato sauce, topped with a rich Parmesan bechamel sauce), a French green bean salad (cooked beans lightly cooked again in an oil-and-vinegar dressing with scallions, chilled, then tossed with lettuce and cubes of bread which have been toasted in butter and olive oil with garlic), and our traditional birthday cake (Amy Vanderbilt's Shaggy-Top Cake--nutmeg flavored, with a broiled coconut frosting).

Everything was delicious (my son complimented the food again today), but I was surprised at how worn out I was just from cooking. I used to cook three meals a day from scratch every day! I guess there's a bit of a difference between our thirties/forties and our sixties.....

I wish I'd taken a picture of the pastitsio--it was so pretty! I made two versions, one vegetarian.
