ten inches and still raining

What I wouldn't have given for a few inches here in July. We had little rain then and only two inches with Irene last week but since Sunday we have eight inches and counting. Major flooding of all creeks and the Susquehanna. You'll soon be seeing PA on the news.

That is a lot of rain. I'm on the eastern side of Ohio. So far it's been heading just barely to the east away from me, by no more than 30 or 40 miles. The weather man says we may get some of this the next couple of days. A few wks ago, we got 5 inches of rain in less than 12 hours in my little town. Stay safe and dry.

lee has visited us here in east side of mi...but thanks be a gentle rain...it's a strange weather pattern,and i think split off from you..while yours is going normal west to east, this is going west from the east...

Jim, Right now I am watching a literal river going down my long dirt driveway and feeling despair over all the lost rose blooms and broken canes. There is a thunderstorm overhead which continues on with a 1 1/2 hr. torrential downpour. Earlier today was no doubt peak rose day for the old once-bloomers and I've been calling everybody all week to beg them to come up and see the roses. I have been waiting a year for this day, peak rose day for the old roses. With all the rain, today was the one decent day and the buds opened up and were breathtaking. Only a couple of people showed up so I was out snapping hundreds of photos since it has rained everyday all June and they were predicting thunderstorms. Now the blooms are all floating down the 'rivers' that run between the rosebushes and most of the bushes have just toppled completely over from the heavy, waterlogged blooms. My brother just called me to say that they were coming over to see the roses (finally) and I said "are you crazy? You're going to need an ark to get here!" He says its sunny at his house and they've been in the pool. We both have homes on mountains and he can see my mountain from his upper deck, just 6 miles away. He says "Celeste, I can see a black cloud sitting right over your mountain and can hear thunder and the weather radar shows a bad thunderstorm situated right over your mountain but nowhere else. It is sunny all around you!" Great. Even God likes my brother more. My roses are destroyed and my basement is flooded. Our bedroom is downstairs in the basement. It was already getting mildew down there from the constantly-wet ground, but now our carpet is soggy, our clothes are moldy, and the walls are damaged. Outside, the ground is so saturated from a month of rain, there is nowhere for the 3 inches that just fell to go and my lawn and gardens are under water. The modern roses will recover and bloom again, but the Old Rose season which had just barely began, is over. There are fallen petals floating everywhere. I am usually an optimistic person, but this is just ridiculous. Sigh. Celeste

Julia, I know how you feel.....we are in a deficit of 5-1/2 inches of rainfall since January lst. The same thing was happening here for weeks on end....the forecast called for pop up showers and thunderstorms but it skirted around my area every time. Parts of the state got it when I didn't get a drop. Then a miracle happened today and it rained. Not a heavy, soaking rain that we need desperately but it was WET and coming from the sky. My daylilies are surviving but like yours are suffering from bud drop, shorter and often fewer scapes and buds and many are malformed. But I am always amazed at how resilient daylilies are. Yours are still beautiful. And your photography is great as always.

At least here so far ithe storm hasn't been as bad as predicted, starting later than expected and with warmer temperatures, so right now we have about 7" of heavy wet snow with a smaller amount of snow still expected for a few hours. Since the prediction was for as much as 14" we are OK, especially since almost everything has been canceled for this morning or for the whole day. I am hoping that we keep our power, but the power companies are ready since I passed a bunch of trucks from out-of-state companies headed north yesterday. Living where I do, this is not unusual for this time of year so most folks take it in stride, despite the alarmist weather folks, and have backup heat and a generator at least to share with neighbors. One nice aspect of late winter storms is that warm soil will drain well and warm daytime temperatures will melt it relatively quickly, so worries about mud and drainage for gardens isn't much of an issue. When we have frozen ground and a good melt, we have " mud season" which can last for a couple weeks and can mire a vehicle in the middle of some of our dirt roads if it gets really bad.

I had issues with some Hosta I tried to plant in the rain. Better off potting them and waiting for drier weather. Absolutely crazy weather this year - Freeze followed by flood followed by fire - upper 80s here the past weekend and today. Not great weather to be waiting for Hosta deliveries (or planting). Luckily two shipments made it on Friday/Saturday, but one still in transit after being mailed last Monday. Fingers crossed. I have been using the frost blanket squares I cut to protect from direct sun on my new plantings. Just some plant stakes and clothes pins and viola.

Alexandria, VA is flooding its banks atvthe Potomac. This is usual for us when we have a lot of rain as we are even with the riverbank. Non-stop rain this week.

Thanks Lynn, we wish you could share, so tired of the smoke, fires and drought. At least we are under a hundred degrees this week!

I wish too, Minnie. This is a case of be careful what you wish for. I have a lot of container plants, a tomato garden, and a garden plot at a community garden. I was getting so sick of the daily watering. I was hoping we'd get a decent amount from Irene which we did..2 inches. Now a little more than a week later we added 10 more inches to the 2 making one foot of rain. There is no thunder..it's just steady never stopping bands of rain. I am so waterlogged and all activities and sports are cancelled. It one extreme or another. The Susquehanna is going to flood big time..one of the top three floods of all time.Hershey Medical Center is an island surrounded by water, but the worst thing I heard was animals dying in the Hersheypark Zoo. They swam and swam till they drowned and they shot one of them. People are outraged.

Evacuations everywhere. The river will crest at record levels. It's very serious with schools cancelled, all events canceled and four deaths already. It's still pouring and has been almost steadily since Sunday

lily -- So sorry. This is terrible news. (Are you near Hershey/Harrisburg? My ancestors are buried at Merryall in Bradford Co. -- much farther up the river.) Are YOU safe?

I'm okay but I don't live near the river or creeks and streams. Thank heavens it's been advised to NOT let your pets behind, and there is a place set up for them since you can't take them to shelters. It's the worst flood since Agnes in 72 to hit here. Governor's residence is evacuated and sandbagged. Water, phone, and power services are spotty.

This was totally unnecessary. They had ample warning what was coming and residents near there said more animals were lost, and they're covering it up. Zoo people put up barricades so the public couldn't see really how many were killed.

I'm surprised the zoo did not have an evacuation plan, that is so sad.
I was stunned at the news yesterday evening: 100,000 asked to evacuate.
