I submitted it to What's That Bug and they replied: moth pupa. They didn't say what species...nor did they tell me what to do with it. ??

Ok, I googled. I was sort of right. It is the pupae stage of the June bug.

Moni, this is waaay too big for that. You can see by the size of it in my hand that it's much larger than a June bug.

Wish the bug people would have told me what kind of moth and what to do with the darn thing. I might want to watch it...but not if I have to watch it until spring.

I think I saw something like that in Cocoon....what you do is...put it in your basement,then in the spring when it hatches,it will take over your body,and you will be young forever.It's just a young one,it has to get human size before it hatches.

My husband thinks it might be a Dobsonfly. I did a google search and did not come up with anything that looked like your picture, but I did learn that Dobsonflies are aquatic creatures and spend most of their lives as larvae, so perhaps it is something like that.

Um, if that is the pupae stage of the Junebug, that's a MONSTROUS one! The size of the one in your hand is 10 times the size in the hand in the photo at the link. I think it is more likely that it is a sphinx moth or hummingbird moth pupae.

Did you have tomato hornworms this summer? It could be a pupa.

It's not a June bug. It's some kind of larvae. Put it back outside in the dirt.

I thought it was really creepy, until I saw Tannatonk's Luna Moth link - now I think it is very cool!!

We saw a luna moth in Maine this past summer -- my first luna ever! It was so pretty!!! And we do have tons of hummingbird moths, so maybe it's one of those.

For now, it is in some dirt in a covered dish on the kitchen counter. Isn't that where everyone keeps their creepy bug collection?

Just called my daughter who's a naturalist about you 'creature', there are moths that do drop to the ground at this time of the year to winter over. She suggested to return it outside, home could be to warm and change it's schedule.

Hear is a blog by a writer/painter naturalist, just a few days ago she wrote about the Monarch butterfly chrysalis.

Oh I was so excited to see this post as I had a very similar experience a number of years ago. Ours was a moth....I was hoping it was a luna moth but it wasn't, and sorry I don't remember the name of what type it was. We had such a great time finding out about them. I have a photo album of the moths emerging from their cocoons etc. if you want to take a look. It really was quite magnificant to watch and to learn so much about them.

It is a Sphynx moth pupa. They are also refered to as Hummingbird moths - as they do look like a hummingbird when they hover over a plant. I have them often in my garden. They sip necatar from the flowers when they are in the moth stage.
The a hornworm caterpillar stage is also impressive if you see them. They are green and huge! They really don't harm much in your garden - but are quite startling to see.

It looks like a moth of some type. We had one last year at the office-I work for an exterminator-we kept it inside and it did hatch, but it happened over the weekend and it, the moth, was dead when we came in that monday morning. I think it would be best to put it back where you found it, because that is what they are use to.
I just hated that thing, the other lady who works in the office here would touch it and it would move around and it just gave me the willies.

I'm going to take it back outside and leave it. Not exactly where I found it because DH is still moving a lot of dirt---but I'll find a place nearby for it.
