WooHoo......I got the turtle!!!!!! Pics

Well I honestly thought he might have left as I hadn't seen him but when I went out there this afternoon...there he was in the water. Then I got the long net and a long piece of wood. If he headed to one end of the pond I put the wood, he'd swim to the other and I had the net!! Had him once and he got away. This went on for a bit till I finally got him. Poor thing must be just terrified and I feel badly for that.

Anyway, here are some pictures. He looks just like those little turtles we used to buy as kids only much larger. He seems to have some older damage to his shell too.

I have him in a tank with some water and a rock and I gave him some hamburger meat. I used gloves to put him in there and turn him the right way. Will let him go probably tomorrow when someone is home to do so...at least I hope!

If anyone knows what kind he is...let me know please.

He's a painted. Maybe you can keep him..other than his appetite..

Looks to have lived a long life by his size.

Hi Fireweed22, Thanks for your message. I had a pond guy come by who thinks the fish are mosquito fish. We are doing some troubleshooting with the pond to figure out where a leak is- somewhere in the pump. The pond is quite big and the turtles were sunning themselves on the pond's perimeter but the water level dropped a few inches and they can no longer reach so they've been struggling to sun themselves on the pump itself. I bought a floating fake log from petsmart but it's a little small. Hoping to have the pond fixed this week- it will be drained and cleaned with the turtles kept in a tank for a few hours...The pond guy said the pond is very primitive, he was not impressed, but hopefully we will get it running well. Also, I took the coffee can of "fish food" to a pet store and they said it was turtle food so I've been throwing some in every few days but the pond guy said they will eat fallen leaves mostly. Any other advice you have is much welcomed. Here's a bigger picture of the pond. Thanks!

A very inexpensive but pretty look you could do for a guest room is matelasse. I use an ivory matelasse coverlet (actually, I have 3 different sets complete with shams) on my bed for 9 months of the year. They are easy care, washable, allow for other accent colors in throw pillows, folded quilts, or anything else, and they would be fabulous with the slightly cottagey look of the beadboard on your lower walls. I have Baby turtle in my living room, and down my hallway. I use reds and bronze greens and black for accents, but almost any color could work with the BT. Ttodd had it used with a soft blue at one point. Perhaps she will post photos. Anyway, if you decide not to go the solid matelasse off-white route, just take your paint chip or a painted sample with you to go bedding shopping. I doubt you will have any trouble at all. The only caveat I would make to working with the color is not to go too drab in your fabrics. A soft muted pattern shows better with light walls. I think this wonderful mossy browned sage looks better with more color. Red

Excellent pictures. We are about to choose "Turtle Bay". Our biggest concern is that we (I'll blame my wife ;-) need to be able to see the bottom for fear a snake gets in the pool. Our deep end will be 8'. Do you think the bottom will be visible with this dark a color?

It looks like a snapping turtle to me. The shape of its head, snout, and carapace says snapper. Those are called snappers for a reason. They have a strike as fast and any snake and the head can extend forward at least 1/3 the length of its shell. They have an exceedingly strong bite and once locked onto an object may not let go without serious prodding. When provoked by a strong stick, they have been known to grab the stick and hang on hard enough to be lifted off the ground. That turtle has been wounded and it was more than a hit from a hawk. At this time of the year, snapping turtles emerge from their winter homes, looking to eat, mate, and lay eggs. Likely, this one was looking for a place to lay its eggs.

What a great blog link...thanks for posting it. I think for the safety of my fish and his safety, he should live in a large natural pond.
We will find a way to get him to one as soon as possible.

When I was a kid, the painted turtles used to be very common. But as an adult, I think I've probably seen only two in the wild. Due to vanishing habitat most probably. Glad you were able to net him.

I agree...do a little research so that you can find the ideal place to release it. It would be happy to have some fresh garden greens to eat, too. Not hamburger, so much.

Anyway, it'll be going back to where it belongs and that's GOOD! Glad you were able to catch it.

Are there any turtle rescues near you? They may be able to place him in a new home.

Just got in from releasing him in a very large fresh water lake. We released him in a boggy area, lots of grasses etc. so he could take his time and get his bearings. I'm sure he will be much happier there!
Thanks everyone :) at least I know what kind he was now. Bet my fish will feel much more relaxed now LOL!!

only bad thing about putting him in a natural pond is other people can find him and might not be nice to him. He looks like he has been abused already.

Is there a zoo nearby that would take him so he could live out his life safe?

Some of the humans can be very cruel.
