WooHoo......I got the turtle!!!!!! Pics

Well I honestly thought he might have left as I hadn't seen him but when I went out there this afternoon...there he was in the water. Then I got the long net and a long piece of wood. If he headed to one end of the pond I put the wood, he'd swim to the other and I had the net!! Had him once and he got away. This went on for a bit till I finally got him. Poor thing must be just terrified and I feel badly for that.

Anyway, here are some pictures. He looks just like those little turtles we used to buy as kids only much larger. He seems to have some older damage to his shell too.

I have him in a tank with some water and a rock and I gave him some hamburger meat. I used gloves to put him in there and turn him the right way. Will let him go probably tomorrow when someone is home to do so...at least I hope!

If anyone knows what kind he is...let me know please.

He's a painted. Maybe you can keep him..other than his appetite..

Looks to have lived a long life by his size.

I'm not a turtle expert, I'll leave that to someone else. I had never seen a tree frog in my area until I put in my pond and last summer I had 12 at a time walking on the siding of the house near it. You may want to try dwarf varieties of water lilies. Dwarf "Sioux" is one of my favorites, its 6" pads nearly cover my 5'x5' pond if I don't trim it back once or twice, and its a prolific bloomer (even when I forget to fertilize it). Water canna lilies are vigorous growers and good for your back wall. My dwarf gets 3-4' high, and one with nice varigated leaves would be 6-8' if it wasn't root-bound :) Pickeral rush comes in purple and white, dwarf and regular. My dwarfs get to be 1 1/2 - 2' high and bloom all summer. And you can't beat water iris for nice foliage to cover the wall too. I got a nice big handful of plants here on the exchange last spring and they were bursting from the 5 pots I planted by fall (about 3' tall). My dwarf papyrus tends to be slow starting, but maybe I'm not treating it right. Don't forget oxygenators for the fish, and I think Parrot Feather would be great in the top. Floaters like WH, water cress and water lettuce are wonderful filters. Bigger plants won't go over the falls, but azolla probably would. You might try a water forget-me-not tucked in the rocks, they love flowing water. If they spread too much you just rip out a bunch and compost it. Good to keep the fish load down - my 6 feeder goldfish equalled 28 in one short summer, so plan on sharing. Your pond is lovely, I can see why you stuck to your guns to have your vision come out just right! Good luck and happy spring!

Well, you dawg! LOL Have seen the wooden chicken crates used as coffee tables with a piece of glass on top. Also have seen them hung on the wall and used as storage. I'd hang those wooden farm tools on an interior wall (if it goes with what you have) or outside on a rustic shed wall. Have seen the strawberry trays planted with rye grass and they looked neat sitting on a coffee table, etc. You did good! (Ya Ya...sneaking on down to that undisclosed location ...LOL)

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I've decided that I want a gold but now I'm trying to decide if I want Restrained Gold or Blonde. I have Blonde in my Kitchen and I love it but I thought that maybe a warmer color would look better in the living room. Any opinions on that? What does it have to be so hard to pick a paint color?! Can someone please tell me how to find a older post of mine. Someone did mockups for me and I cant find my post. Thanks, kim

What a great blog link...thanks for posting it. I think for the safety of my fish and his safety, he should live in a large natural pond.
We will find a way to get him to one as soon as possible.

When I was a kid, the painted turtles used to be very common. But as an adult, I think I've probably seen only two in the wild. Due to vanishing habitat most probably. Glad you were able to net him.

I agree...do a little research so that you can find the ideal place to release it. It would be happy to have some fresh garden greens to eat, too. Not hamburger, so much.

Anyway, it'll be going back to where it belongs and that's GOOD! Glad you were able to catch it.

Are there any turtle rescues near you? They may be able to place him in a new home.

Just got in from releasing him in a very large fresh water lake. We released him in a boggy area, lots of grasses etc. so he could take his time and get his bearings. I'm sure he will be much happier there!
Thanks everyone :) at least I know what kind he was now. Bet my fish will feel much more relaxed now LOL!!

only bad thing about putting him in a natural pond is other people can find him and might not be nice to him. He looks like he has been abused already.

Is there a zoo nearby that would take him so he could live out his life safe?

Some of the humans can be very cruel.
