For clarity, (from my experience) softnecks don't truly scape, but sometimes they revert. Softneck garlic has been selected over the years (centuries?) to no longer produce scapes, mostly for the ease of harvest. Nature creeps back in via recessive genes and scapes do appear sometimes. Of my favorite softneck varieties (early red italian and Lorz italian), which I grow about 1000 plants of each year, i've rarely seen a scape over 18 years. This is probably because I continue to select my own seed every season and wouldn't plant one with a hardneck. To confuse matters more there are also the Asiatiac, Turban and Creole types which are referred to as "weakly bolting hardnecks", meaning they don't always make a scape though they are still classified as "Ophioscorodon" (hardneck) as compared to "Sativum" (softneck). Below is a link to a great website with more garlic info that you could ever read. I've sold seed to them in the past and highly recommend the company. -Mark Here is a link that might be useful: Gourmet garlic website

That's fascinating! It's mind-boggling that they had the knowledge and ability to move homes back then. Our ancestors were awesome. When I look at the architecture and millwork in old buildings, I can't believe what they accomplished with their primitive tools. There is a lot of history in our commonwealth. I love reading the history of our little VA town, which was settled in 1738, and saw a lot of action in the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

I've lurked, but haven't posted very much since the switch to Houzz. For starters, I am not actively growing anything from seed, and I only have a few varieties of fresh seeds that I have collected. Because I have not been actively trading (or even just sharing for postage) my trade list is very out of date. There are a couple of things that have bothered me since the switch. I 'think' many older GW members who were quite active, are either gone, or they have changed their screen name. Who knows? There are very few GW names that look familiar to me. Yotetrapper, you are one of the more familiar names, and I see you have been a member since 2007. I'm not sure, but I think that many members lost their 'join date' from their member page. Now, there are so many new names with no join date. I wish there was a join date on every Member Page. Though the Conversation Side (remember Conversations?) of the old GW Seed Exchange wasn't all that active, I would love to see it reinstated. It would be great if the posts that had been on Conversations could be restored to that side. Right now there are six posts here at the Seed Exchange that, in the past, would have been posted to the Conversation side of the SX (seed exchange). It would also be nice if the old GW Special Instructions for the Seed Exchange were reinstated, and officially posted at the top of the page. On old GW SX, all posts on the On Topic/Discussion side were actual trade posts. Now things just seem so willy-nilly. Many subject lines list seeds, but they don't tell if they have, or if they want, that particular seed. If the SX had an Off Topic/Conversation side, many of the new, informative and helpful posts could all be corralled there. Sue...former rbb edited to add....I have never voiced the things listed above to GWTamara. I should have done that long ago.

Most will be in ground, aside from the few I keep in pots as ornamentals or bonchis. I had 30 plants in my garden last year so I think I should be ok with 5 extras but with all new varieties idk what to expect from some of them, especially my baccatums. last year’s pepper patch
