The older I get, the more I understand that there are things I just don't want to know.

It is true that experts and pamphlets are always going on about layers of brown and green of particular depth, and wetting and turning the pile, Probably they are thinking they should start newbies out composting according to best practice, without the experts realizing that they make it sound so complicated that it might stop people from even trying. A health and fitness magazine I used to get had a small article about composting. They made the whole layering/turning/wetting business sound mandatory. I wrote a letter to them explaining that if you throw whatever you have in a pile, it will rot, and those other things are optional. They printed the letter, but who knows how many people had already thought, "Oh, composting is too hard." John, you say that you leave the greens and browns pile up separately. The fact that they compost faster than predicted is probably because they are doing some composting while they are waiting to be mixed together, also because you shred them. Smaller items compost faster. As for quantity applied, well, most people don't have that much, so they don't say to use that much. I garden mostly in lasagna beds that are quite deep with compost, and almost everyone agrees that this will work fine. As for turning, that can help the process, but I think most of us know that is optional. So really no conflict with composting theory per se, you just don't follow the 'best practice' possible for fastest, hottest composting. So what, sounds like you are doing great. (You must have one heck of a shredder to shred that much material!) Marcia

I think you might be interested in a method I have been thinking of for a water fall feature, Ill try my best to describe it to you, it would be a water fall with a "cave" behind it, you build your false bottom first (pvc eggcrate)then in whatever corner/side you chose you build a frame, this frame will be the "skeleton" for your water fall, build it to be a cave, keeping in mind that when complete the water will be falling down and in front of this cave, make it caddy corner or directly on the side wall of the tank,(I think caddy corner would look best) you can make the opening to the cave as wide and as tall as you want, remember to be creative! this is your baby! you place the pump on the opposite side of the tank, where you will place a piece (or several pieces) of egg crate in the rear corner of the tank, again caddy corner, make it from the bottom of the tank up to the top of the tank, so that when you look directly down from the top of the tank, the shape behind the egg crate is a triangle, understand? make sure that the space behind the egg crate (the triangle) is large enough to allow your pump to be easily pulled up and easily lowered back in, that will be your access area, allowing you to clean/replace the pump when/if needed with out disturbing the tank and the inhabitants, you run the hose from the pump inside and at the bottom of the access area up to the top of the tank, then fold the hose at the top of the tank and send it back down the access area, the reason for this is to have enough hose to pull the pump up and out of the area when needed, then you simply run the hose along the bottom of the tank under the false bottom and up to the top of your water fall, there you will place your choice of "basin", slate, natually bowl shaped stone, driftwood, or whatever you want your water to run off of, you glue the hose in place with brown silicone at the spot where you want the water to begin filling your "basin" also use brown silicone to hold your basin in place, let it dry, then, starting from the bottom, begin to add the expanding foam, building the "muscle" of the skeleton as you go up, (remember to add the right size pots onto the frame using wire ties before starting the foam)cover the entire cave area in foam, not thick! just enough to cover the frame, them let the foam dry over night and add your favorite cover or "skin" if you will, I like coco fiber, I described the method of application in an earlier posting, you will do the entire back of the wall (if you like) using this method, that way the whole tank (back ground) looks full and complete, you can make your rivers and ponds using this same method also, just use small gravel for the river bottom instead of coco fiber, then you can let the rivers drain at the other end of the tank. Please let me know if this might work for you, also if I failed to accurately describe any part, please let me know and I will try harder! LOL! I will post pictures of the access area on my tank soon, hopfully tommorrow. =^)-

Uninstalling Firefox may leave the user profile data intact for a reinstall. Suggest uninstalling again and manually deleting all the profile data. Reinstall, which will then create a new user profile. Backup your bookmarks before uninstalling and deleting the profile, so you can import them into the new profile. There's a backup function (and import function) under Bookmarks / Show All Bookmarks. I had a situation recently in which Firefox stopped working with my online banking billpay service. The page would load with no errors but blank. IE worked OK but I refuse to use IE. Just my local bank. Three credit card accounts elsewhere, brokerage account, and other secure sites worked OK. Local bank worked OK with the Firefox Default user, which is not the profile I use for myself. I keep Default bare with no add-ons or bookmarks saved. Apparently something went awry in my user profile. I created a new profile (without reinstalling), copied bookmarks to it from my previous profile, reinstalled my add-ons, and that solved the problem.

I'm in that group too. I am the last surviving of nine brothers and sisters, and my parents have been gone for many years. I have 3 nieces I keep in touch with, all in other states. My DS lives in SC and is involved with his family there, so he comes home less and less. My DD lives about five miles away and we talk a lot on the phone and she comes to see me almost ever Sunday. My good friends are like me, old and decrepit. We keep in touch with phone and/or email. New friends are my neighbors here at the Retirement Community. They are mostly also "old and decrepit" and we "don't get around much anymore". Years ago I was delivering Meals on Wheels and one dear 90-something year old lady wanted us to stay and visit. She said she gets so lonesome. I mentioned that she could call up her friends and at least talk to them. She said, "Call them up? Give me a shovel and I can dig them up!" She at least still has her sense of humor. Sue

ABC's of Aging
(giggle, giggle)

A is for arthritis,
B is for bad back,
C is for the chest pains. Corned Beef? Cardiac?
D is for dental decay and decline,
E is for eyesight--can't read that top line.
F is for fissures and fluid retention
G is for gas (which I'd rather not mention--
and not to forget other gastrointestinal glitches)
H is high blood pressure
I is for itches, and lots of incisions
J is for joints, that now fail to flex
L is for libido--what happened to sex?
Wait! I forgot about K!
K is for my knees that crack all the time
(But forgive me, I get a few lapses in my
Memory from time to time)
N is for nerve (pinched) and neck (stiff)
O is for osteo-for all the bones that crack
P is for prescriptions, that cost a small fortune
Q is for queasiness. Fatal or just the flu?
Give me another pill and I'll be good as new!
R is for reflux--one meal turns into two
S is for sleepless nights,
counting fears on how to pay my medical bills!
T is for tinnitus--I hear bells in my ears
and the word 'terminal' also rings too near
U is for urinary and the difficulties that flow (or not)
V is for vertigo, as life spins by
W is worry, for pains yet unfound
X is for X ray--and what one might find
Y is for year (another one, I'm still alive).
Z is for zest
For surviving the symptoms my body's deployed,
And keeping twenty-six doctors gainfully employed.

The older I get, the more I realize that I have today ... and tomorrow - maybe.

As for money being the root of all evil ... that's the song that Guy Lombardo and folk of his generation sang.

The Bible quote that they were supposedly referring to is, " ... the love of money is the root of all evil". Not quite the same story.

If you don't boss your money, there's a good possibility that it'll boss you. And sometimes I think that may be more true for folks who have no financial cushion, especially if they have large debts, as well: in such cases, a layoff can be a killer.

That past years when you were busy, having little or no money while raising your children you now think of as the good old days.

You spend more time in doctor's offices and attend more funerals.

May I shift the topic just a tad?

You know you're getting old when ...

... you visit a bathroom with motion-activated light ...

... and the light goes off while you're still sitting, deep in contemplation (or is that "concentration"?).
