This thread triggers a fond memory.

One of my favorite old time movies is "Mr. 880." The star is Edmund Gwen, the lovely old fellow who played Santa in the original "Miracle on 34th Street."

It is WWII, and the poverty of the Depression is affecting some of his neighbors. One sweet young bride (played by Jeanne Crain) whose husband is off to war is a worry of his. He observes she does not have enough money to buy food and pay the rent, so he stuffs a little cash into her purse.

He talks of his Rich Uncle Henry as a source for financial aid for his needy neighbors, and then you see him in the basement, freshly printed dollar bills pinned to the clothesline to dry. And he is printing counterfit bills to help others on Uncle Henry, the name he calls his press.

The Treasury Department sends agents to investigate who is passing counterfeit bills in the neighborhood. The bills are beautiful because whoever engraved the plate to print the money was a master engraver. There was just one problem--he spelled "Washington" with an R.

Cute movie!

I think nu-culer is probably the most annoying to me. My own mother used to say radio-ologist instead of radiologist, no kidding!
Here's a couple more that I can't stand:

Real-a-tor, instead of Realtor. I guess a lot of it is how we grew up.

My mom had been a high school English teacher, and she cringed as we learned to use "ain't" from our playmates. As we grew up, she threatened to use something like a curse jar and charge us every time we used the word. Somehow, we all quit using it before we entered high school.

I see so many people using your for you're, but you know what? In the grand scheme of things it just doesn't make a difference. People talk the way they hear things and learned as a child. Spelling errors jump out at me, and sagal, I thought I was the only one that knew a lot was 2 words, but, like I said, who cares? No biggie. Don't sweat the small stuff. I just spent the day at a cancer symposium and believe me, nobody there would think this is important at all. Priorities.

My Mom could not say Hawaii, no matter how many times we corrected her !It was something like ha-whoey-a, and to this day when I hear the word, Hawaii > I wish she was here to say it wrong :-)

jasdip-I had to look up Jeweller,jeweler,jewelry Jewellery.Evidently all are correct.
I agree with Vannie and Lavon.Really doesn't matter and people pronounce certain words the way they have heard them all their lives.

What a FUN thread! Didn't we cheer Kat up???? This kind of thread is one of the many reasons why we come back again and again.....holding our breath sometimes....that no one has hurt feelings or taken offense and we have just "solved"????? one of the worlds' greatest problems. These things all ring true to me, and the further (farther?) I get from those school/working days, the harder it is for me to be sure of the spelling etc. MY Dad could not say "funeral" to his everlasting grief. Wish I could hear him say it once more! Nanny

Lilliepad, you are right, they are all spelled different ways, but should never be pronounced as Julery. Especially by a jeweler!! The first e is often dropped.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "zink"....as in "wash the dishes in the zink".

One that gets me is when envelope is pronounced On-velope.

LOL, the last time I checked in on KT, the other thread about butchering words was going strong.

The French pronunciation of On-velope (since the word is borrowed from that language) is also correct, and the one that I grew up using.

I had a third-grade teacher who insisted that the first 'c' in Arctic or Antarctic was silent--until today, I thought that was correct. She also insisted that the 't' in often was silent. Now I have to go check that one. :)

My pet peeve is the word forte, referring to an area in which a person excels, being pronounced as fortay, similar to the word forte referring to music going louder. Over the years so many people mispronounced the French word for the former meaning, that it eventually became acceptable to do so and now appears in the dictionary as correct either way. However, it bothers me when I pronounce it as 'fort' which is after all the original pronunciation and someone tells me I'm saying it wrong!

What surprises me is how often when a person means quiet, they type quite. And it is not a typo, which I make all the time, it is every time they say it. Another is want instead of won't. Stops me in my tracks every time.

Here in the upper midwest many elderly people say battry instead of battery.
Is that a regional thing?

Geez, I'm going to have to frame some of these posts! Usually I dodge bullets - not sure how to handle compliments around here except from a couple fabulous folks. But yes, the bulk are great people here. (Ah, but I digress.)

Feel free to push the ONvelope (full of money) my way... a saying which makes about as much sense to me as "Bob's your uncle"! No, I have uncles, but no Uncle Bob here.

Some of this is fodder for other threads but in this state "indexes" is the term used, not "indices". Yes, I know either is correct, technically, but it's as wrong as calling veggieJell-O a "salad", with or without "mannaise". Now don't get me wrong, I have deliberately tried to get more veggies into my diet, hence eating a lot more carrot cake! But there is a group of culinary terrorists operating trying to put an inch of ketchup on top of meatloaf, salt on watermelon and I know, somewhere, right now there's a conspiracy to put broccoli into a Snickers Bar and tofu into M&Ms. When will people learn that some things are just not right! And as long as I'm ranting, why do they call it "fast food"? When did anything resembling "food" come through a McDonald's drive up window and when was it fast?

What about affidavid for affidavit? Maybe an atha-lete taking barbituates would do it hogtied with bob wire? But that's nunayo biness or bidness for that matter especially if you're a cannidate in a fedral election afraid someone might take pitchers of them doing wrong things and once it's on filim you could be in trouble from which you couldn't excape "irregardless" if you jist did it one time.

If you'll excuse me I prolly bedder git going since I have to see about a miniture perscription and don't want it to be a "mute point" if the vetern's home wadn't acrossed the street but it's still the upmost importance for all intensive porpuses.

Of every Miss. Pronounct word and those thet are slurred nearly beyond recognision, eye hav an easy excuse. Ya see i was born partly deaf and was raisd by un-educated Hillbillies and Oakies. by the time i was startn kindergarten I had learned to say every one of each family member's oddly pronounced words; thereby, learning to speak with an accent that is far more pronounced then any single family member. I am consistently asked where I "come from", because I do not sound like any Cali-forn-yen you ever heard.

The Oregonians I know made a point of telling me that it's pronounced Ore-gun, not Or-eh-gone.

Well, we always put salt on our watermelon, and cantaloupe and sliced apples. DBF likes lots of ketchup on meatloaf. I have a cousin who pronounce it ketSup as she puts it on her eggs. I don't care for it, maybe on fries, sometimes.

My Dad always said ondions so when I started school I went home and told him how to pronounce it! He laughed and called them ondions until the day he died.

I have a cute story about my son when he was 4 years old. His name is Shannon and he has a sister named Shawn, my dad teased him and called him Shawnon until my son said,"Grandpa, you call me Shawnon again and I'm gonna call you Grandma!"

I guess I need to "orientate" myself to this a little better. My one partner could never get herself to say the word statute correctly. She, (and an college English major on top of it) would always say statuette and come to "thing" of it, she mispronounced that too! She always emphasized the first syllable.

FWIW, about the only ones I hear say "shedule" usually includes "Cheerio, pip pip and all that sort of rot"... But then they tend to say "pass-ta" instead of "pawsta" when they're cooking spaghetti.

Jasdip, I know people who switch the Ws and Vs too and being from a Scandinavian family whose grandparents came from the old country, and a father (confirmed in Norwegian) who didn't learn English until 1/2 way through his eight years of schooling, I do have to chuckle and comment how my family is rather unique since so many eat a "joke" and tell a "yolk".

One other? How about people who think "cloths" is "clothes". Occasionally, typos happen, not unlike quite/quiet. And I'm not picking on the people who don't know better. I *am* picking on ones who *should* know better. Teachers are a constant source of amusement! And sadness too since they're the ones supposedly teaching the kids. Student, teach thyself I guess.

I had an Aunt who used to visit once in while from CA. I loved her dearly and miss her visits. She used to fracture the English language in the funniest ways. The one that comes to mind is there was a TV show on about dinosaurs, and she called them........DinahShores.

So far no one has mentioned something I hear about in my age group -- men who are having "prostrate" trouble.

I had an older friend (gone a few years) and I would give a lot to hear her say Africans (afghans), Allumeeum fearl and refrigerwaiter again. Thanks for bring back memories of dear Lousie.

I'm laughing so hard I'm crying! I'm a pronunciation geek. I find regional vernacular fascinating, so certain words or phrases don't bother me. However...

I was born and raised in Joliet. Long "O". Not Jolly-ette. It's a city in Illinois. The "S" is silent. Not Illi-noise. Lived in Channahon for many years. Channa-hahn. Not Shannahan.

I don't own a "chester draws", nor do I eat in my "dinning" room. My windows have valances, not "vuh-laaances". My TV is in an armoire, not "armour". As someone upthread mentioned, iron is "wrought", not "rod".

I'm a designer and have heard these mispronunciations used by other designers as well as clients. I could go on, but I don't want to bore anyone.
