Canned Pumpkin At Walmart

I just got home from doing my grocery shopping. We went to Meijer and Walmart. Walmart had the small cans of pumpkin for $1.37 a can. Meijer had only the large cans of the pumpkin pie filling. It looked like at one time they had a spot for just the pumpkin but it was empty. Those of you that are looking for canned pumpkin you might check your Walmart store. There seems to be plenty of fresh pumpkins all ready for the season.

We just picked up canned pumpkin at our local grocery store. The clerk didn't know anything about a shortage, but I do know that the spot on the shelf has been empty for the past 4 weeks until the other day, and when I got there, there were only a dozen cans left. I bought 6 of them... didn't want to be a pig and take them all. And there are plenty of fresh pumpkins here too, just the canned pumpkin that seems to be in short supply.

Thanks for the update!! I wonder how long it takes to pick, process/can and deliver the pumpkin?? I've learned of all the alternatives, but I still can't wait to be able to go buy a can! :)

Tom, "John, are you using the white bags? I'd be concerned about the dyes and chemicals in the other colors.... " Good point. Heres what they (Greenbag Inc) say... "Is made from non-toxic, non-corrosive materials and safe color-fast dyes". I'm interested in these for several reasons, drainage, cooling and cost. I know they drain well, I don't think you could ever fill one with a garden hose. The upside down tomato bag I tried last spring stayed cool and it was black. The ones from Publix are a buck and I hear W mart's are cheaper. So I'll give it a try. john

Premature pumpkin harvest here. Heard a large crack in the back yard yesterday, and went outside to find my largest Big Max lying on the patio with a big gouge out of it. Either it got too heavy for the stem to support or the squirrels were playing with it. Anyway, it broke off and rolled down a slight slope and over the retaining wall fence. Decided it was nature's way of telling me to harvest and get the vine into the compost pile. The big pumpkin weighs 43.5 pounds and has a 54 " circumference. The smaller one is only 13.3 pounds with a 31" circumference. Loved growing these this year and will probably grow them again next year. 3 New England Pie pumpkin plants have produced 5 good sized pumpkins and I have 6 more that should be ready in a few weeks!

If you go to Walmart.com the Mainstay lids are described as being manufactured by Jarden and appear to be a copy of the Golden Harvest lid. With the price rise of Ball lids to $2.12 vs $1.32 per dozen for the Mainstay I think I will use the less expensive lid. I always have liked Golden Harvest lids in the past. With regard to Empire lids the 2 dozen I had in stock sealed fine but I have seen failure of the plasticsol lining and corrosion on youtube. It appears Menards stopped carrying the Empire lids for 2017 but they still sell Ball lids at last year's pricing at $1.76 and often carry the 11% in store purchase credit rebate.

Did you look inside? Is there anything in the puree you use that isn't in the pumpkin? Is the pumpkin in chunks? What makes it different? If it's just pumpkin, yes, you can use it. Use your food processor or blender to puree it, or a potato ricer or masher. The only issue is that if it's not closely packed, you'll have less pumpkin than in a same sized can of puree, and you'll loose more to the dishes by pureeing it yourself. It should still work fine, but you might need to adjust the volume/moisture of your recipe a little.

I was our Walmart yesterday, and the shelf was empty, the same for our local grocery.

As of Monday, the "pumpkin spot" on the shelf at my grocery store was empty....I'm sure hoping we get it soon...

I bought some Libby's last week at Costco. I didn't look to see where they were grown if it even tells, because maybe I don't want to know! LOL To be on shelves already, I would guess they came from South America.

I stopped and bought Wegman's brand pumpkin today at - well - Wegman's. LOL Last week my daughter picked up a can of pumpkin pie filling at the Shop Rite. But the shelves were only half full.

I didn't look for canned but my WM had a lot of real fresh pumkins in the veggie section

I just saw Libby's small can at the Jay-C Supermarket for $1.99 and the big can for $2.99.

Aldi had the small cans of their brand for 89 cents and I got 2 of them, but haven't tried them yet.
