I currently have a tile entryway with carpet after that. "IF" I were to remove the carpet and put in wood flooring(I might).....I want an inlaid wood design in the entryway(I'd remove the tile).

Here are some ideas:

We tore out the hardwood in our entryway and put in tile. Ours is the entry we use all of the time, and snowy/wet shoes absolutely ruined the wood. It didn't matter what kind of rug I used, the floor underneath was black from moisture. Installing tile removed a big headache from my life!

FYI, I'm an interior designer. I don't understand hardwood in an entryway. IMO, it's a silly trend.

In my opinion you should keep your tile. If people come in with wet muddy feet tile would be easier to clean up and no damage from the water. I have a friend who has wood and it is slippery when your feet are wet. I think a contrast between tile and wood makes it more interesting.

When I had our house redone we took out all the carpet and put in tile except for the 3 bedrooms. Now I wish I had tiled the whole house.

Our home is 90% hardwood but the entryways are all slate. We are in an area with snow and ice as well as rainy springs so it only makes sense to have something durable and easily cleaned.

I've had tile, slate and hardwood. I have wood now which is fine but our entryway is used only by company. We come in through the garage.

The hardwood in our kitchen goes all the way into the entry, but we have a long throw rug in front of the door.

Our entry gets heavy use - the front door and the garage both open to the foyer and we use those doors 99% of the time. Plus we've always had large dogs. We ripped out the ugly, cracked white hexagon tiles that were they when we bought and replaced them with slate. I love the fact that the slate has several different colors in them and with dark grout it all blends well together.

The rest of the house is hardwood and carpet.

Our whole house is hardwood except the baths and the back hallway (between kitchen and garage). However, our entry door and foyer are formal and not in daily use. The back hall and powder room have light grey, stone-look, 13" porcelain tile. It has to get *filthy* before it is noticeably dirty.

Keep the tile in the entryway. That part of the floor recives a beating from footwear that has come in from the outside - moisture, mud, grit, and grime. The only pieces of wood in my entryways that have survivrd are the hardwood oak thresholds under the doors. These are made of the hardest, select oak, pressure treated, and sealed/coated with marine finishes. Immediately inside the doorway, we keep a throw rug, or remanent of carpeting, to catch the first dropoff from shoes. This gets shaken out periodically, and if necessary, rinsed out in the laundry tub. Even with this care, after 30 years of living in this house, the entryway need new flooring. The original is vinyl linoleom over an underlayment.

The entry and the main hall are tile. Wouldn't have it any other way. Tile is over 2 decades old, not sealed, put down by my DH and looks like new. We have carpet adjoining it now but are changing to hardwood.

We always come in through the front door and that tile has had everything from roller skates, boots laden with machine chips and even a motorcycle rolled over it. It stays. It's a taupe that is beige when it is next to a warm tone and looks gray next to cool tones. I have only washed it with a well wrung out damp mop of plain water. Never got dull. Best thing we ever did. Wish I could get more of the same lot. I'd do my whole house in it.

Our entry is tile, and the rest of the flooring is hardwood (except kitchen & baths, which are also tile).

Our 'entryway' is our enclosed porch. The floor is wood. I just refinished it last summer and by this, it's already showing signs of wear by the outside front door.

My sister has slate in the small area by her front door--it looks nice and really saves the floor.

A bakery I used to work with installed a really good, heavy-duty wood floor in the store. It was supposed to last them for 'forever'. within months it was virtually ruined by the traffic coming and going.

There's no way, if I had the choice, I'd have wood by a well-used door. Unfortunately, given the configuration of our porch floor, we can't put in anything that adds even a fraction of an inch in height, so tile, carpeting, even a throw rug are out.

My entryway is white marble and my floors are bamboo - love them both - so easy to keep clean. With lots of foot traffic, I would choose the tile if I were you.

We have a wood parquet entry. It's been down for almost 20 years with no issues except for a couple small chips.

I do think tile, slate or vinyl would be more practical, but I haven't had any problems with the parquet.. we keep rugs down for wet and snowy shoes.

My floor person talked me out of tile in the entry way too. It does make the rooms seem bigger and not "chopped up". So far no problems, but we don't live in snow country. We got a fairly dark wood

As long as the slate threshold is evened with a nice transition with the rooms next the entry then it is up to you. It sounds pretty. I think you like the idea. I have seen it and like it too. There are always optional rugs if you need a little change.

I live in a condo and have hardwood floors in my entry with a rug and throughout except for bathrooms. The kitchen is tile. By the time people come up the elevator their dirt is cleaned off. I think it depends on your configuration. I can say I love hardwood floors. So easy to clean. When I vacuum I catch all dust and follow-up with a damp mop. Will never have wall to wall again. That's just me. I'm allergic to everything but food.

I have laminate with a wood-grain in my front hall/entry. Oak flooring in the rest of the house, but the kitchen has linoleum. Different flooring materials look good, in my opiniom, help to separate and define different areas f the house. Her's where you come in, her's the elegant room, here's where we cook and eat. The laminate is waterproof, washable, great when guests enter from bad weather outside.

Inside the never-used front door is carpet, in family room, into of which corner the front door opens.

Back door opens onto a carpeted landing, with steps up to tiled kitchen and down into basement. Carpet is rather prone to getting dirty.

Outside of the back door is a closed-in porch with a concrete floor, and I can put a carpet next to the door into the house, which has an aluminum storm door, but the one leading from the outside is so close to the concrete that it scrapes, so no carpet possible there.

The entryway is tile and as much as I would like it be hardwood all the way up to the door, the tile is more practical. I think you could do wood, but I'd get a couple extra coats of poly on it and definitely have a rug.
