Thanks everyone, I don't think I dare show this to Ashley, she's going to get a big head! Cathy, don't worry about it. I know that everyone has their own way of doing things and I know you aren't malicious at all. At least I don't have to deal with a florist, a caterer, flights, accomodations or foreign languages! Ashley did hire a photographer, but that's her problem. Social event? ROFL. We don't have "social events" here, and I've never heard anyone refer to any local wedding as a social event. It will be a heck of a good party, though, so if you want to come to Michigan, come on up, I'll have a cranberry juice and limoncello ready for you. Thanx! My wife baked a popcorn cake for our daughter's wedding. When it came time to cut it the groom tried an ordinary knife which didn't work. He then pulled out a real big knife, maybe a sword type thing - nope. Next he pulled out a 3 foot meat saw I just happened to have, put one knee on the table and tried to saw thru - nope again. Next may have been a hatchet and I believe the last straw was either an ax or splitting maul. All staged of course. Everybody enjoyed the whole thing except the brides father who took a dim view of such purile amusements at such a solemn occasion. Which is why he was not allowed to pay for the wedding. Which is one reason I am married to his ex-wife. I danced with the Women's Libber from across the street (she asked me).

Here in Texas, it is common to have a groom's cake and I'd bet 9 times out of 10 it is chocolate sheet or sometimes a sculpted cake reflecting a hobby, profession or such while the "bride's cake" is most commonly a traditional tiered white cake, updated tiered, cupcake tower -- sometimes a carrot, spice or fruit cake with white or pastel tinted icing. If white cake is used, it is common to use a lemon, strawberry or raspberry filling between the layers. My first thought would be to do a tiered cake with piped icing designs that reflect Australia, England and, possibly, the US. Might depend on your friend's artistry and willingness to explore and play with some ideas, but it could be as simple as taking the Union Jack and piping the crossing lines and stars in different variations on the different tiers. The shape of the Sydney Opera House, boomerangs, Aboriginal designs, crowns, roses, tea cups -- whatever it was that had them both in Australia might be a theme, but playing with that inspirations in an understated way that creates an updated and personal, but still elegant and traditional cake. You can also use fruits, nuts and flowers that are traditional in the different countries -- Let making things special be fun, not a burden. With a year, your venue is probably the only pressing matter, and even that will depend somewhat on how flexible you are on timing (I've had to book some banquet halls near popular wedding times. Focus on that and everything else will fall in line, I enjoyed planning my wedding with mom. Not being able to do the same with a daughter of my own is one of the things I will miss most in having only sons. Enjoy it.

I was invited to the wedding of friend's sister, along with another friend of ours. The bride was a pretty obnoxious, spoiled brat but we were very good friends with her brother and kind of felt sorry for her because she didn't really have any friends and wanted the biggest wedding she could have. The ceremony itself was fine but when we got to the reception, the MOB set my friend and me to work bartending. We were horribly embarassed (and had no idea how to bartend) but we muddled through it. What made it even more embarassing was when the MOB insisted on paying us at the end of the night. I have no idea where she got the idea that we were there to tend bar but suspect the bride had something to do with it. As an example of how the bride's brain worked (or not) we visited her home a while later. I was helping her with something in the kitchen and noticed a bunch of tiny labels sticking off of a windowsill. When I asked her what they were doing there, she said that her parents had given her some Waterford glassware they had gotten on a trip to Ireland. When she served guests she wanted everyone to know they were Waterford so she would leave the labels on the glasses, then take them off before washing them and then put them back on.

Steph, I'm hosting a bridal shower in April for my future DIL. I tried e-mailing you, but for some reason it wouldn't send. I was wondering if you would be able to make some cake pops for the shower? 40 or so? I think I live fairly close to you.

Those are super cute!! Has everyone seen the bride dragging the groom cake toppers? They're cute too. If not for the 'real' wedding cake, they'd be fun at a bachelor or bachelorette party.

Oh Kat, I am opening a bag of worms here.
My family is all from the Cle Elum/Roslyn Area. We all say "Crick for creek" and "Warshington" especially the older relatives.When we go to visit my son and his wife, we always go to "Orgun".
I did a little checking around years ago, and it really is a Washington dialect.

how was fishing on the Yak? I would love to learn
to fly fish! DH was up at Seiku and caught NOTHING! lol
which is really unusual for him. My brother called
that Sunday evening (they were staying for the week)
after DH got home and said they had their limit
in 45 minutes! and caught fish every day after that! LOL

I would love to know how to do the tuxedo. The bow tie is 2 hearts and the buttons are pearl beads but the two colors is what is stumping me.

um, I would think you would dip it in the white,
and then angle it into the darker chocolate on each side

It's done just like Kat said. The pop is first dipped into white coating, cooled and then dipped into the chocolate one side at a time to form a V.

I don't do them much since they are too sweet for my family but kids love them along with grown-ups with a sweet tooth.

You can do the same using strawberries if you want something less candy like.
