I know, I know, I need to get a life. Sadly this is my life LOL I just get wonderin' about people in commercials. Like the Progressive gal, Flo, is an L.A actress, Stephany Courtney. Although I'm getting tired of these commercials, it really is a good gig for her.

Then those Restasis eye drops commercial and that pretty lady playing the eye doc. Turns out she is a real eye Dr. specializing in cataract and lens implantation surgery in SD. Her name is Dr. Alison Tendler.

That is about all the useless info to report this morning. LOL

I don't watch TV at all but my husband happened to have the news on yesterday and as I was passing through the room there was a commercial for BP which caught my attention. The spokesperson was a woman who said she was from New Orleans and that her family was there, and that BP was going to be there till all the oil was gone and all the people who were affected were fixed up.

I thought, hmmmm... I wonder what they paid her for that commercial.

I love trivia like that. Interesting to know that they hired a real doctor for that one.

I love perusing old commercials on YouTube and finding those "before they were famous" ones - The ones from back when they were just starving actors taking any gig they could land just to pay the bills and slowly help build their resume. Susan Sarandon in a girdle commercial. John Goodman as the face for Hungry Man TV dinners. Sean Hayes in a Frito Lay potato commercial. Who would have thought back then they would go on to become icons and award winners?

It's just a guy who decided (whether innocently or not) to use his land for a commercial endeavor without doing it the way the rest of us have to. The guy wasn't harvesting veggies to give away to his church. Heck, he had to actually bring in others to work his "garden" in order to get the stuff to market. Given the publicity he'll probably not have to pay or pay a reduced amount. He would not have this issue if he didn't have a commercial operation going on. It seems he's a good guy, but he was running a business. "Research into DeKalb County codes, as well as calls to district Commissioner Burrell Ellis' office, reveal that the closest Miller comes to a code violation is in the use of land for commercial gain. The problem isn't the growing, it's that he sells his vegetables at an offsite farmer's market." He can do what he wants with his land, but if he wants to sell the produce...especially at the *3* farmer's market he sells at...he has to play by the rules. I don't support the fine, myself, and hope it's tossed, but he's no innocent babe in the woods.

Makes me angry too, Lynnie. I'd also like to know what 'fresh tomato season' has to do with tomatoes at the typical super market? You're likely to get the same tomatoes you got when it wasn't fresh tomato season, IOW, boxy, tasteless, breed-for- mechanical harvester jobs. I can't tell the difference there from one month to the next. I've used chicken poop on my gardens now since I got chickens. What, twelve years? Fourteen? Before that, I used cow poop, or horse poop. I grow the whole nine yards, including things like head lettuce. Never got a food born illness yet from that garden. Manure managed appropriately has been used since before written history. Contamination can occur anywhere in the production process and to me it just points out what England discovered during the scares of the last decade with cattle and several diseases.......they regretted losing the many smaller, local food processing facilities, abetoirs because if any of them had a problem, that made it a smaller issue.........easier to contain and easier to define a source.

Luckygal, branding has been around for a very long time. For example: Vernon and Irene Castle slapped their names on everything and anything you can imagine and stuff that you can't from candy to cigars, shoes, records etc. This was back in 1912. They were the pair that put ballroom dancing on the map and made it extremely popular. Irene set many fashions trends in her day including the incredibly ugly but very popular stove top hat and was one of the first to bob her hair setting off a new look for hair in the 1920's flapper. They owned nightclubs and dance studios. The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers dancing that we all recall fondly in their old movies was based on Vernon and Irene's innovations in dance. My kids (aged 30 and 26) are not swayed by such nonsense and neither are their friends. I think there has always been (and always will be) people who feel safer purchasing something endorsed by a "name" and others who look for quality, value and style. sayde, I have done something sort of halfway in-between all of the above and it has worked very well for me. We are spending a lot of money but because I wanted even more I set out trying to do as much of it on my own as I could. So between online reading, showroom shopping and GW, I go along making as many decisions as I can handle and when I bump up against the wall, I have a KD who consults with me. I make an appointment with her and she consults with me for an hour or two about the decisions I've made, offering advice about anything she thinks I've overlooked or forgotten or misunderstood, etc. Then I go back to work and move until I reach the next point at which I need a little feedback. After getting my cabinets drawn on graphpaper and labelling where everything was going, I realized I needed to hire her to do the elevations for me as my biggest weakness is really not having a good 3D "mind's eye" and I really want to "see" what I'm planning a bit more realistically. My second biggest weakness is not having a lot of confidence in my design decision despite having strong preferences when I see something so she will help me a lot in pulling together colors/styles. I have found this process to be a good compromise--because I do the research I know a lot about what I'm choosing and why (mostly thanks to GW)and feel I have a lot of control over the process and so feel confident talking to her about what I'm trying to do. I've saved a lot of money by just paying her for the hours that I've really needed her advice and at the same time I have to say that when I have paid her for advice I have definitely felt that I got what I was paying for. (My only regret has been that I didn't realize that she didn't do 3D computer drawings which I would have preferred.) Overall though it has been a very helpful and easy relationship; she did refer me to the cabinetmaker I am going to use but I interviewed him along with several others and there was no required tie-in. I might also ask if you aren't planning to get bids from more than one contractor...I got 4 bids, none of them connected to the cabinetmaker, all of them highly recommended by people whose kitchens I saw first and all of them willing to work with my cabinetmaker. I don't think I'd be comfortable going with a GC that wasn't willing to say that if he got the job with me, I would be his first priority. I guess in the interests of full disclosure I should add that we haven't chosen our GC yet--still comparing bids--and so perhaps my conclusion will change before it's all done. But so far it has been a very nice way to do it, albeit not fast. Good luck with your decision.

I take all commercials with a grain of salt. After learning that those infomercials are just paid actors, not "doctors" etc, I don't believe anyone who claims to be a professional.

Good for you for knowing that particular commercial is a legit doctor Dotmom.

That is so interesting, Dilly dally. One of the reasons I like it when they run The Twilight Zone marathons on the scifi channel. So many, then, unknowns who eventually became 'name actors' I find this kind of trivia interesting. I would live to see John Goodman in his younger (and maybe hungry) days when he was just starting out.

I've always wondered about those Twilite Zone actors......Sort of a 'chicken or egg' thing. Did they only go on to become famous merely because they happened to land a bit part on a TV series that became truly successful? Surly that would have beefed up their resume and put them ahead of others for casting call. I'm sure when they were doing casting call for Star Trek there were many, much more talented actors applying, than William Shatner (Yes, I am sure of it.) yet he was chosen to star in the series. Same with Leonard Nimoy.

Those old games shows had lots and lots of the 'now famous' appearing on them - especially those dating game type shows. With the exception of a few shows like Jeopardy, I get the feeling that the only people they used were out of work actors from the Actors Guild trying to get their name and face out there. There are lots of actors that I recognized and the rest probably fell by the wayside and persued other careers more suited to their talent (or lack of it).

It is also interesting to find now famous directors who cut their chops by directing commercials. (BTW did anyone know that David Lynch directed two commercials for Alka Seltzer, and one for Clear Blue Pregnancy Test?)

Even great, and now very well known, artists often had to "pay the bills" by doing commercial advertising contract gigs. Patrick Nagel is one of them who had to pitch products with his art. His now iconic style is known to just about everyone but he started out doing local newspaper advertising layouts and handbills for local events.

I've been racking my brain but just can't remember which old game show on the GSN that a very young David letterman, appeared. He said he was jsut starting out as a stand up comedian. At the time, Who knew??

dotmom - googling, David Letterman worked for $25,000 Pyramid. But, it didn't say he hosted. Don't know.

I like that you looked this up! DH says the eye DR. has "creepy" bug eyes....she never blinks. :0) I LOVE Flo! She's fun!

Moonie, I'm so sorry, I just can't remember the show. David was a contestant on this show. I want to say it was a quiz show from the early 70's or late 60's.

Moonie, it was mentioned that he was on the pyramid, but I think the show I'm thinking of is password. The picture is more like I remember his looking like then. Kind of Dorky in a cute sort of way. Thanks for the info, kiddo.
