No more canned pumpkin

Don't know if this is true throughout the country, but I live in Michigan, and went to buy some canned pumpkin for recipe I wanted to try before the holidays, and was told there is NO canned pumpking anywhere. Was told thre is a shortage and they don't know when or IF it will be available. Can u imagine Thanksgiving with NO pumpkin Pie???????

Pumpkin is not the only squash that pie can be made from, and most of them are available in your supermarket at Thanksgiving time. If indeed, canned pumpkin is not available, you can still have your pie. You just might have to (gasp!) make it from scratch. It's not that difficult and tastes much better. We always use banana squash to make our "pumpkin" pies.

According to the Urban Farm calendar, you've missed the "ideal" planting time by a few days. I'd look for seeds at a good local nursery and see if there are some that mature earlier than others. As a backup, I'd get a transplant. I got one at Bakers.

Seminoles are so easy to grow, and very tasty. The only problem is the flesh tends to be thin. This year I'm trying 'Taina Dorada', a variety developed in Puerto Rico for its disease resistance and semi-bush growth habit. We'll see if its as care free as the Seminoles.

Candy, love your metal stand and everything on it. The pumpkin tureen was a beautiful find last year and it looks right at home on your stand this year. What are the red leaves on the right side made of? They sure look neat on this. The white metal thingy looks like a wedding column for flowers or a plant. Was it already painted like this or did you add your painting touch to it? You are a very busy lady and I sure enjoy seeing all you do. This reminds me I still haven't gotten all my pictures downloaded but still have almost 2 months to accomplish that task. Punk

No idea if interchangeable, but pretty sure about differences. Canned pumpkin is just that... pureed pumpkin and probably some kinda preservative. Pumpkin pie filling gives you a jump-start on a pie... spices, sugar, etc.

Don't tell, but I have a can stashed away. Whooda thunk it? I should think there would be a new crop for this year, but maybe not. I've heard that sweet potatoes work well in a pumpkin recipe. (I also have a box of Jiffy cake mix, so I guess I'm a real hoarder.)

I noticed that last week when I was going to pick up a couple cans to make pumpkin bread in a couple weeks.....the shelf at the market was bare. Dang!

I wish there was some sort of an update on the pumpkin crop for 2010 as the link below is dated June 6, 2010...sigh

I don't like pumpkin pie, but my kids do. I've promised them pumpkin pie if they can grow one. We have pumpkins planted, but so far no crop. The vine borers got the first plants. A second crop is planted, but I'm not sure the bugs are pollinating. Hopefully, something happens soon because I want jack-o-lanterns.

I'm not much on pumpkin. Pumpkin bread, cake and cookies are OK but not exactly a favorite so it doesn't impact me at all. Seems to me I've seen canned pumpkin at the stores around here at various times. I'll have to take a look next time and see what it looks like for availability.

The vet said to give it to our peke, and cats when we had them years ago, to help with any constipation. It works for people too, just regular canned pumpkin, not the sweetened pie filling variety....
I quit looking for it last year, I'll try again now that you have reminded me....

No shortage here either.I saw it just a few days ago at both Wal-Mart and the Kroger store.Maybe I should stock up?? All my family loves it but I make the pumpkin casserole thingy I think Glenda posted a while back.It's also good with sweet potatoes.

There hasn't been any canned pumpkin on the shelves at the grocery store for a very long time!! I live in a small town with a population of about 2500 peeps.
I asked the other day when I was there and they said they just got notice they will be getting some in...I think they said this month?? BUT they will be limited to 2 cases!!!!!
Urgggh if I see it I will be buying it! I am pretty sure those cases are only 12 cans to a case!!!
I've been craving pumpkin chocolate chip muffins for 2 or 3 weeks now....or whenever it was someone bought up the pumpkin shortage here last time.

Well, I checked the cupboard and I have one can of pumpkin left from last year. I bake pumpkin bread for our holiday table. I may shop for one more and bake some bread for DDs table when she hosts her inlaws.

I would assume that any canned pumpkin on the shelf right now is from last year's crop. In my neck of the woods, new pumplins are just now becoming available.

Not sure if there is a shortage around here or not, but the garden did wonderful this year. I love butternut squash and planted some which did wonderful, wasn't sure what I'd do with it all, then my dh wanted blue hubbard and planted that, and boy do we have alot of squash. Now I know what I'll be doing with alot of it now. Pumpkin pies really are good made from squash especially if you mix a couple different kinds.
