We have been in our house for almost 12 years, and have worked on every room. The other day I was in the hardware store and saw a chrome toilet roll dispenser, nothing fancy, but it caught my eye. I got it and replaced the one in the downstairs bath. Amazing how changing a simple fixture can please you! Everytime I go in there I wonder why I waited 12 years to replace the old worn brass one that was there.

I am sure no one else would notice, but it pleases me, and everytime I see it I wonder why it took me so long to replace the one that was there. Oh well, as they say...simple things for simple minds!!

I'm thinking I 'might' have noticed the old one and would likely notice the new shiny one.

That reminds me that I could probably find a nice Welcome mat to replace the old one. Do you think you would notice the tattered one? Do you think you would notice a new attractive one?

Ever notice how some folks seem to stay on top of replacing older, maybe ratty looking things?

I think part of it might be that the old one still worked, and since there is pretty much always something else that needs attention because it doesn't work, or is starting to not work, that we tend to "let slide" the things that do work. (The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule.)

There's also the factor of why spend the money when you don't have to, in this yucky economy.

I love your musings, Steve. :) I've been trying to make things with all the herbs from the garden. For whatever reason this year my herbs have never been better. My French Tarragon is huge (comes back every year but this year!). So yesterday went to a Father's Day picnic with all the cousins and I made a green salad from the garden (I'm partial to the limey green Simpson Elite), a potato salad with potatoes I had left over (not from the garden), a ton of tarragon, chives and parsley from the garden and just mixed with olive oil, dijon mustard, red wine vinegar Yum! Spinach is just about done but I've been trying to eat a handful with every meal. I need to make some batches of pesto before all of my parsley and cilantro go to seed. Saturday night we had some friends over, the kids were running around barefoot squealing, friends were over for good company. We made a huge salad from greenns/herbs with hard boiled eggs from our chickens and bbq'd grass fed beef from a local Colo. ranch and I made vodka mojitos with mint from the garden. We got out the instruments and I thought that I hadn't been happier in a long time. It was all so simple and lovely :)

I don't recall anyone saying you are a bad mother. You're son seems to be doing fine. Which brings us to your stepson, which I assume is why you picked a stepparent forum to vent on. Your expectations for a toddler are too high. Your son may be very bright. And is a year older than your stepson. You cannot compare them. My son is almost 4 and JUST mastered the potty. All on his own. We have been fighting potty training for almost 2 years. It's not something you can force. It comes when they are ready. And if you are frustrated, potty training willbe harder on the kid. You say that he got everything he wanted from grandma as if he is manipulating people before he was even two. This is what makes you 'seem' to have such high expectations. What kind of training did this daycare center require of you? Are you licensed? Do you have your teaching certification? You say you school him from 11-12 every day. Do you realize that if he were in a daycare setting, he would not be doing the same 'schooling' that your 3 yr old would be doing? You just seemed to have this expectation that he was supposed to live with you and that you snap your fingers and BAM he is a new kid ... With all these skills. This stuff takes time. My daughter is highly advanced. At 10 she is taking a year older classes BUT she didn't talk until she was well over 2. I feared she had a hearing problem. The doctor said to give her time.. In time she started talking and she has yet to shut up. I highly suggest you seek a doctor's help. Not once have you mentioned that he has even been evaluated by a pediatrician only by you and your 'over 25 years of age, 5 years in a daycare center, 3 years of being a mom' experience and honey, that does not qualify you as a professional. I think this poor boy has been through so much in his short life, I'm willing to bet you are going to have a long life of learning struggles and behavioral problems just because of what he indured the first year of his life.

Marilyn, Visit your local pet store and browse thru the grooming supplies section. You should find scissors made just for trimming hair around the feet and ears and they come in different lengths. The tips are rounded so they're much safer than regular scissors. Here's what I use. I suggest buying one that has curved blades since I find them easier to use than the straight blades.

The original post is very scattered. Picking through the chaff, it looks as if the house was left a mess after closing. That does happen. Unfortunately, you lost your opportunity to force them to leave the house in a reasonably clean condition when your mother closed on the house. Your realtor viewed the house for you before closing. It's not unusual for there to be bags of trash left at the property from the moving process. But, they should have been minimal and left on the curb for the trash hauler to pick up. Evidently, this didn't happen. Was the house occupied by the owner or were there renters in the house? Too bad that you had to hire someone to clean up the house and haul out the trash. Present the bill and pictures to your realtor's broker (boss). Tell them to make it right. Inspections and inspectors range from excellent to ridiculously bad. It appears that certain items in the house do not work. Did you have an inspection? If yes, did you get a written copy of the report? Did you read it carefully? Did you follow up on any deficiencies? If the oven doesn't work, unless there is a home warranty insurance policy, you are out of luck. Were you or your mother present for the home inspection? Did either of you talk to the inspector on the phone about the report? This responsibility falls on you, not the seller, to determine if things are in working order. Buying real estate is the last of the great horse trades. It's a buyer beware situation.

This makes me laugh.. We have 3 kids and all have the new HD TV'S. Our TV was so old but like you say it still gets a picture. I don't know how many times they have told us we should get a new one. Finally for Christmas we got a new one as our gift to each other. I hate to say the kids were right. I can say it here because I know they won't see it... This is just one item they think we need to replace. But, one thing at a time... Right?

Oh well, as they say...simple things for simple minds!!

Oh so wrong to think because we enjoy the simplicity of things we are simple minded.

I find much joy in the simple things. I love to watch the little neighbor kids play a simple game in the yard one I played as a child and taught them. I like a plain water or real lemonade rather than a specialty drink. A plant or flower blooming in my garden will give me as much or more pleasure as a dozen roses from the florist. I fix little things around the house and it feels like a new home. When the simple things make you feel good, your life will always have wonderful moments. If you wait for the big things to make yo feel good then you will often have disappointment.

LIL..... Like you, I get so much enjoyment out of things that happen outside, like the flower blooming, a bunny running across the yard, the birds, the bee's, a sunset, and recently my husband finally put up a towel rack for me, and it was like *WOW* how cool is that ! LOL

Doing something to make your home more pleasing to you is far better than running away from the place to take a cruise or something because you can't stand living there. Many people run away from things. I enjoy my home. I worked d@mn hard to get it and enjoy being in it. I could have spent money other ways and wound up renting a trailer house or something but I wanted a real house to call my own. I have my priorities, others have theirs. I don't redecorate for the sake of redecorating. I change things when they're more functional. And occasionally I'll get something just because I like it. Nothing wrong with that. I didn't need a new clock in the kitchen but thought an atomic clock would be nice so I wouldn't have to set it 2x/year or more often. I've been very happy I spent that $12! And I even spent another $9 on an atomic travel alarm. I use it by my recliner and take it with when I travel, even though traveling is seldom for me these days. Simple little things? Yes. Anyone else notice? No. Do I care???? Guess! :)

Oh the simple things that please me, are simple indeed!
I'm a pen-and-paper-holic. Hubby bought some pens that I was eyeing that were on sale. They are wonderful! (not expensive at all, they just write nice). Then lo and behold, Walmart had their 3-ring notepaper on sale for 25cents per pack. Well, just had to have them.
I'm thrilled and hubby just smiles. And if I'm someplace where they are giving out free pens....I'm in line!

I know what you mean, Sue. I once had a kitchen I liked really well, but something just didn't seem right. We happened to be at Home Depot and I saw these kitchen cabinet pulls on sale so I replaced the old ones and had a brand new kitchen for under $25.

I just bought a new rug for under the sink for this kitchen. Sure makes a difference.

The last time I visited my Mom, she had replaced the sheer white curtains in her kitchen. The new ones looked so white, they almost sparkled. I figured the old ones were about 45 years old and extremely yellowed, but the change had been so gradual I hadn't noticed. Makes you look at things differently, huh?

Speaking of the simple things that give pleasure...
In our house all the light switches are the new "rocker switches." I bet at least once a day I think about how much I like those.

When I moved into my house twelve years ago, I liked the paint colors the previous owner had done. I lived with them for ten years before I decided I was "allowed" to change them. LOL Now I love, love, love the colors I chose and had the house done!! It was like getting a brand new house! It is the simple things........
