How far is the drive and how long would it take? Can you break it up into segments by stopping for the night somewhere halfway? Did you ever consider hiring a driver?

Take your time getting there. You have all the time in the world. Stop every two hours and stretch, walk around, have a picnic, maybe visit some places of interest along the way. Go for it. You'll be so glad you did.

It's a 6-7 hr trip. We always stop every now & then. Well prob go for it, even if I AM a worrier! My main objective of a trip is taking pictures!!

I was thinking how far is your place to gettysburg,pa?Theres a bus line here that has package deals you go to ocran city for a few days,stay at a motel all included.I could get your numbers ,if not you could call your bus lines.

Oh, go for it....you're both still young chicks as far as traveling is concerned. As long as you have time, make a stop every couple of hours and stretch out a bit. I think you will regret it if you don't go.

On mapquest it estimates the distance at 190 miles and about 4 hours of driving time. If you break that up with rest stops it does seem like you'd be able to do it.

Definitely GO, fly or take a bus or drive. Four hours is not a long time to sit in a car, as long as you make at least one rest stop to stretch. And you are NOT OLD. Middle age, maybe.

Even if anyone thinks they can drive 5-7 hours without a break is nuts!! You should get out of the car every hour or so just to stretch out the kinks & reinvigorate yourself.. I got into the habit when driving my 80+ mother on trips of more than an hour... PS.. to entertain yourself -- try an audio book -- that's if you both like the same kind of books!!

I hope you are able to go. Sounds like a fun trip and stop that worrying. LOL

Ocean city is nice but my personal preference is just a few more miles up the coast in Delaware. Fenwick Island with it's lighthouse, Bethany beach and Rehoboth Beach. IMHO Ocean City is for the younger set, much bigger and noisier, tho now that school is started, that may not be the case. Bethany has a small boardwalk as does Rehoboth. Then there's Dewey Beach between Bathany and Rehoboth, just a little beach town. There are outlet stores near Rehoboth and since it's Del, there's no state sales tax. If you like steak there's a restaurant on Fenwick Island called The House Of Welsh, that serves great steaks and seafood, I thought the prices were reasonable when I was there in July. Of course everything is commercialized, what isn't today. I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express in Bethany. It's not right on the ocean but within a 10 min walk. Very nice rooms, clean and a great complimentary breakfast.

Wow--6-7 hours? I wouldn't go to any of the Atlantic resorts if they were 6-7 minutes away. Mind you, I spent every summer of my life at the Jersey shore growing up. And I HATE the crowds, danger (too many crooks and hookers), horrible high rises, high prices. It's not a vacation to me, if I have to contend with all that stuff. Add too many hours on the road? Fact is, I live less than an hour from 2 of the most popular NJ resorts and other than popping into one for a half hour last July to pick up my dd's birthday cake from a cake artist, I haven't been 'down the shore' in over 25 years.

I don't know where you live, but what about finding something a little closer? A cute quiet cabin on a nice lake where you can hear yourself think. Or what a bout a lovely B & B in an out of the way town that has a great restaurant? We've stayed at some of those in Pa Dutch country, and it was SO much more relaxing than heading to a bustling resort. We also stayed at an Inn in Western Virginia that was unbelievable--out in the middle of nowhere, and it was exquisitly furnished with antiques, the chef is a world-renowned artist in food. We were able to visit the kitchen. Now THAT was a vacation--and we didn't get sand in our shoes--LOL.

I just think you could have a nice time without all the driving, and probably for a lot less $$$ than you'd spend at the shore.

However, if your heart is set on seeing the ocean, is it possible to take a train? That might be a reasonable solution.

if it takes 2 days to get there who cares? we drive during the day light hours...and try to avoid high peak traffic hours...keep hydrated, and make pit stops...and if you're like dh and i, we take a cooler for bread and lunch makings as we can eat out just so much...

You need to find a way to get yourself there that is comfortable and safe. If you don't think your driving is good, then you guys don't need to be on the road. I'd look at options like having your son drive you up there and leave you for a few nights and then coming back to get you. I think a bus tour would be a good option. AmTrak might be another good option. You could always try to rent a car just for some local sightseeing. I'd definitely take the trip given the opportunity.

Whatever you decide, have fun and make lots of memories.

Being not familar with the area, can't give you advice, but DH and I drove to CA from ND last year, without a problem, but then we are use to driving around 600 miles a day even with the trailer. We hope to go to our GD HS graduation in june and that is in CA. He will be 80 and I will be 79 and still going. Not as far each day, but just going to one Dr is 147 miles each way. Just use to driving.

I have always said 'I love going places, I just hate the commute'!! My main objective for not liking traveling, is that I miss my 4-legged kids and I know they miss me too cuz they are like velcro whenever we get home!!

Bigack, we just got home from our trip yesterday. The only drawback I see to your trip is that it will be in October and possibly too cool for the beach. But while you're both in good health, please, please take a trip together. Harry is 80 and it was so very hard on him. He has P.A.D. which affects his walking ability and is very painful. We used to love getting in the car and just going. This was such a sad trip for both of us.

So please take the time to enjoy each other's company away from home while you can. You just never know when it won't be possible any longer.

I'm kind of like you: I wish I could snap my fingers and be where I want to be without all the hassles! (Yes, I loved watching "The Jetsons" as a kid!)
