If I am understanding what you are asking correctly - you can go to "Tools", then choose ÂOptions at the bottom. Under the Edit tab check the box next to "Enable AutoComplete for cell values". This will result in the program finishing the cell after you type the first letter  i.e. if you are typing "Family Name" each time you type a F in the same column it will finish it for you. Hope it helps :)

Chirotera_mama, thank you, but that is already enabled. What I want to do is follow down the column without typing anything. We have a page number column, a race column, a township column, ect. It looks like this

pg white/colored father mother township
1 w xyz xyz brownhelm
1 w abc 123 brownhelm
Hope this makes it clearer. With the township, yes it fills it in. with the page and race, I have to keep typing it, instead of the comand to copy it down the column. I know there is one, I've used it, but my memory is blank, and I can't find it in my emails about the transcriptions. This is the only thing I have ever used Excel for, so I can't do much in it!

I am understanding the question differently from Chiroptera. I think you are trying to put the same information in the cells below what you typed. Click on the cell you want to copy. Place the cursor in the bottom right hand corner. The "hand" should turn into a rectangle with arrows on 2 corners. Click and drag the box down however many spaces you want to put the information. Done.

You want to copy the same info in cell 1 down into rows 2-100?

Click on the cell you want to copy and hit Edit->Copy. You'll see the cell is enclosed with a dotted line. That means the cell contents are in memory.

Then go to the first cell you want to paste it into, click on that cell, hold down the shift key and "paint" or highlight with the down arrow all the cells you want to copy the information into. When all the destination cells are highlighted, release the shift key and hit Edit->Paste and cell #1 contents should copy into every cell in the column that you highlighted.

If you make a mistake, just hit Edit->Undo and it will undo the process and you can try again.

You can also use shortcut keys which are faster than using the toolbar commands. Hit Control C to copy and Control V to paste.

Thank you!!!! That doesn't seem like the way I was doing it before, but it works and that is what counts!!!!!!!! It sure saves key stroke when you are doing page after page!

Maybe this way helps ...

Go to the cell you want to copy the data from, and press the Control key and then the C key. (keep the Control key down when you press C)

Move to the first blank cell in your column where you want the data to be, and press your left mouse button. Keep it down, and scroll down the column as far as you need. When you let go, all the cells should be highlighted.

Press the Control key and then the V key.

Your data will populate in all the cells highlighted.

I'm glad the other peeps realized what you meant and had the solution :)

The way you did it last time was probably by selecting the cell and dragging the lower right hand corner.
It is just a tiny bit faster than C&P, but either works.

Stoney, I think that's the way I was doing it before. I will write all the different things down on sticky notes and stick them to my printed sheets that I am working from. I didn't see your post until now. I have done pages and pages! I only have six more to do on this disc, then I can turn that in and get another 20 pages to work on.
