Has anyone here ever visited the Natural Bridge in Virginia?

The website says you have to buy tickets to see The Natural Bridge, but then you end up with tours of the caverns and the wax museum.

I thought Natural Bridge was something just off the roadway. Does anyone know? I don't want to do a bunch of touristy stuff. I just want to see this natural wonder!

I saw it about 15 years ago. I don't remember having to buy a ticket. It is well worth seeing. A really beautiful work of nature. If I'm not mistaken Luray Caverns are in the area. That is another natural wonder worth seeing if you haven't already and are nearby.

We went there 5 years ago. We just saw the Bridge which was very interesting. I don't remember how far off the road it was.

I try to avoid touristy stuff!

I just wanted to post that I was out at the National Arboretum a few weeks ago. The large Q. acutas looked like they sustained some damage from teh past winter. Some twig and a few branches died back. Sad to see. But they will certainly survive. The Q. salicina looked like it had NO damage at all surprisingly. I have never seen acorns on them. Interestingly the Q. phillyreoides had some acorns. No apparent dieback. They all looked rather shrubby to me and not large single trunked trees. L. henyri and Q. myrsinifolias looked just fine. Q. glauca specimens at the Arboretum have all had a rough go of it over the years. Numerous diebacks. Pretty pathetic. They should really not be grown up here. But maybe they got some northern provenance stock that they wanted to try. I didn't see where they were from. Unrelated, but all the hollies looked great. Even Ilex latifolia. The Ilex latifolia in my yard looks great as well. No apparent winter damage. A small amount of leaf spot but overall I was very pleased. My husband grew up there, his sister still lives in the family home.( near Salmon Creek) the only crime she has experienced was she was robbed by teenagers while she was at work. They came in through her doggie door. One robbery in 64 years..not too bad. There's meth areas, but it would not be in the newer nicer neighborhoods. Meth is everywhere anymore, every town has it somewhere. Obviously a older single woman wouldn't be out late at night in those areas. My sister in law goes to see her half sister in assisted living after work, and also goes out karoke with her friends late at night. Never a problem. Vancouver has gotten HUGE as compared to 20 years ago. It has very good medical facilities, great shopping and a very nice park system. Fort Vancouver has a amazing 4th of July ! Not going to lie, traffic is bad every time we go. I'd rather not drive thru to Portland on I 5, we always take 205. There also is the metro bus system..very efficient. It does NOT rain 3 out of 5 days. Winters can be gray and drizzly, but no one is shoveling several feet of snow either. When it snows, it's rare and in inches. It lasts two days and is gone. Spring, Summer and Fall are very nice. There's lots to do, and no one bothers going to Portland for groceries. But if you did, you do not have to declare you are not from Oregon and pay Washington taxes on them. A car yes, but groceries or clothing no..never at IKEA either. There are nice grocery stores and a Costco right there. They go to the airport exit because IKEA is there. We will be there again tomorrow for two days.

Split is home to Diocletian's Palace. Diocletian was one of the later Roman emperors who had this palace constructed as a retirement home. Over the centuries different parts have been repurposed, which is why an old Roman Temple is now a Christian church. They've been digging out the old foundations which are really neat to take a tour of. From Split I'd recommend a trip to Trogir. Trogir occupies pretty well all of the tiny island it is built on and has some amazing ancient buildings. There is a very good walking tour on offer from the tourist office. Along the coast, you could stop at Krka which is similar to Plitvice but different enough to be worth visiting IMO. Then on to Zadar, which is really interesting and has the Sea Organ and the Tribute to the Sun. This is a large plaza at the edge of the sea, which has little lights embedded in it. The Sea Organ is pipes under the plaza which are open to the sea and which are tuned so that when the waves push air up them they make a sound. The lights light up at night and make random patterns depending on the sounds generated by the Sea Organ. It's really neat, and to sit there and watch the sun go down is a magical experience. Apparently Alfred Hitchcock said they were the most beautiful sunsets in the world. We visited a church there which was built around the year 1000 and is clearly made from chunks of old Roman buildings. Form Zadar you go up to Plitvice Lakes, which are amazing, and huge. You could easily spend two days wandering around in there. The scenery and waterfalls are just gorgeous. We did this trip in reverse a few years back and I would love to do it again. If you like cheese do try the Pag cheese which is delicious; it's a huge pity we can't get it here. Also try the Prsut, which is like Prosciutto. I really envy you :-)

A normal root canal may take a week or less, but in your case, I fear it will be longer. You are having pain and the nerve in the tooth is dead. Also dead are the blood vessels and chamber pulp. You are having pain because the tooth and probably its support structure are infected. The time required to open the tooth and clean it out, and then plug isn't much. The problem is this: The Dentist does not dare to put a permanent plug in that tooth until the infection has been conquered. How much time does that take - who knows, but its got to be done. Here's the drill. [Sorry about that choice of word :-) ]. The tooth is opened and cleaned out. An antibiotic may be inserted in the tooth. A temporary plug is installed and a pill form of antibiotic may be prescribed. Another session will be scheduled for exam. Followup sessions will continue until the infection has cleared and then the job will be completed with a permanent plug and filling. After completion, another followup may be recommended to insure that the infection is gone. An infection complicates a root canal. The root canal itself, does not require a lot of time. There is an upside. After successful completion, you will feel much better, and the tooth will seem normal.

Have been to Natural Bridge quite a few times when I was younger. I don't remember having to pay to see it, but I guess things have changed. You do get out of your car and walk with the guide and they tell you the story and you do walk under the bridge.It is prettier at night too. But thats the best I can remember. And yes, the Luray Caverns are well worth the cost of a ticket to go see. By the way, have you been to the Presidents Park in Williamsburg yet? Don't know if you would be interested or not, but they are closing for good at the end of this month. Jane

Thanks for the many replies! We're going there soon and I was surprised to see the "pay to go" info at the Natural Bridge website.

I'll report back after I go there. And I'm planning to take many photos, too.

Nope, but I was "under awed" to visit the natural bridge near Clinton, Arkansas!!! LOL (nudge, nudge, Flamey! LOL)

I was there as a kid. I think we checked it out later and remember it being VERY expensive for what you get. You can buy tickets for just the bridge or bridge and the caverns etc.

Now Luray Caverns is pretty interesting. Just off the highway-slightly toursity. We were there about a year ago with my kids and loved it. Now I will warn you inside the caverns the walk is not perfectly flat or dry. Can be tricky if you aren't steady on your feet. They give audio headsets to listen to a tour. It takes about 45-60 minutes. But it's visually amazing!! You also get admisson to a antique car show next door. There is also a garden maze, but it's extra cost.

I also have a discount tip for Luray Caverns. Are you near a Giant Grocery store?? Get a bonus card from them and you save half off one admission! They also take AAA cards for a small discount.

Hi Rosemary. Natural Bridge is just off I-81, exits 175 & 180. And you can buy a ticket just to see the Bridge (includes the Cedar Creek Trail as well). But right now the best deal is buy one ticket and get one for 81 cents (this includes the Bridge & Caverns). Hubby and I just returned from our day trip to Natural Bridge. Yes, there's an admission and it was - for us - $18 per person! That included a visit to the toy museum which is uber touristy and not very interesting.

The Natural Bridge is a beautiful site, but it's so filled with touristy stuff all along the way. I loved the Natural Bridge itself, but kinda got disgusted with what a tourist trap it is.

Since I am very claustrophobic, would not do the caverns, but like several say, they seem to charge for everything, but they are not the only ones. I remember when Knox Berry Farms in CA was free and Disneyland was very cheap and fun and not super crowded.
