I had an english teacher who called her briefcase her "gritchel", don't think that's a word, but we always use it to refer to any suitcase, or shaving kit, etc. Now I'm going to go muckle my eggs, lol

Anything big, or outstanding, (like a big fish you catch) my dad would call a 'way hee'. I don't know where that came from, but we all use it now.

I had a security blanket I carried with me from when I was an infant to age 5. I called it a "smatchie" (pronounced "smay-chee"). Mom had no idea where I got the word.

When my daughter was a pre-schooler, she made up words for several things. One, she called her forehead a ponytank, and the city bus was a case bus. After a time the rest of us in the family used those words too. Dottie

When I was little, I couldn't pronounce my big sister's name, Vikki. She was "Icky" until she was in her 20's and her husband insisted we stop. LOL

my DGS calls toe nails toe lashes. My DGD calls her pillow squashy.

Over easy eggs were and still are called "Goop" eggs...
They are the best...

Our youngest is 36 and we still use mispronounced words they used when little tykes- they bring us sweet memories.

My brothers and I made up stuff, but I can't think of any of it right now.

I have a 4 yo dd that says "t'morning' for tomorrow morning. She has all of us calling tomatoes 'maymos'.

My kids said "hammurmurs" for hamburgers. When they're here, I still find it hard not to ask if they want hammurmurs on the grill. DGD said fruit "cottontail" for fruit cocktail, and at 15, still jokingly asks if I have any fruit cottontail in the pantry.

The word "huge" isn't used at our house - it's "hooge". Ponytails are "Bobbygails". Anything that smells is "active" (for radioactive). These are all courtesy of grandkids.

If one of us has a scab anywhere (sorry!) it's referred to as a "Scabby Hayes". We just came up with THAT one by ourselves! LOL

We also have a low spot out by our mailbox that the paper carrier has "wallered" out over the years - it's called "the Gary Hole"! LOL (Gary has been our carrier for over 20 years.) He drives like a maniac and the papers are still always late! LOL

When my cousin was a little boy he called shotgun shells fah-deers. No one knew why, not even him!

"do lolly" was used in my family for anything you didn't have a name for. Also, the common "thingamajig".

Directions: Put that little "do lolly" in this here "thingamajig" and your "perneardone".

Casey, I remember when your email address used to be mysmatchie. I had a calico cat and I named her after your name, but I pronounced it differently. Her name was Miss Matchie.

I don't remember words I made up but I remember my daughter calling make up "make stick" and when I asked her how much she loved me, she said, "two eight." So when I ask my husband a question that should be an amount...he almost always says, "two eight".

Oh...yeah. I remember a couple of words I used. My brother brought me a black and white kitten when I was little. My mother said, "What gender is it?" I thought she said Ginger. But she said, "No, gender." I thought she said General. So I named my cat Ginger General.

Also, I slept with my mother until I was 5 years old. We had a tiny old house that was very cold in the winter time, and I used to put my hands between her breasts to warm them.
I called that "Feel Titty." :))

Instead of hamburger or hot dog, my niece used to say Ham Dog.

When my daughter was little, my mother would slice an apple in half and show her the seeds, and say "See the little eyes." Erin couldn't say that but she would say "La De Lah." When she was nursing, she would say, "La De Lah" and that meant the other tit. (Okay...breast.) :)) Later on she shortened it to La Tit and later still "La ter"....for other.

I always loved to eat "fudgeicles" (the frozen chocolate ice cream bars.

When I was small I called my grampie "grumpie". He didn't like that too much! LOL
I also called music musmic.

My youngest always called the spring whisk a "pinger", so that is what it has always been. I was at another daughter's house for dinner, as was her MIL. When the gravy was a bit lumpy, MIL said, "Use the pinger", so I guess the word got around!

I was at my Great Grandma's house and she started to knit a sweater for me. When I asked her how it worked, she showed me, as she described the process. But when she mentioned 'knitting needles' I said "but those aren't knitting needles, they're clicker sticks", I guess because of the sound they made, lol.

When Great Grandma passed away, it was my first time going to a Funeral Home. My mother prepared me by saying I shouldn't be afraid and it would just look like GG was asleep. Apparently when we approached the coffin to pray, I said "Oh poor Great Gran, she does't even have a blanket in her dead bed."

Like many parents, my parents would spell things they didn't want the kids to hear. This wasn't just for negative things but also for good things, like ice cream, that they didn't want us to know they were discussing.

My oldest sister asked our Mom to buy T-D-I, which was her 4 year old version of spelling ice cream. That one is still in use in our family.

My Dad wore a military uniform to work and when he came home, before he could do anything else, he first had to change into his "sit-down pants". We still use that term for after work casual clothes. It represnts a whole mind-set of relaxation and play time.

When my daughter was younger she would say "heatalater" meaning the grate on the floor from the furnace. She still slips and says it once in a while.
Turlet was another that we tried for years to break her from saying. Youngest one had a "sue" (pacifier) but I can not remember her ever putting it in here mouth, just over her thumb when she went for a nap or bed. Pa sketti is still around for supper with stinky cheese. That still goes on the grocery list...easier to spell than Parmesan

My DD used to ask if she could soft something, she meant feel.

A magnifying glass is called "the eye" after the witches in "Clash of the Titans". I can't see this writing, bring me the eye.

Anything my husband cooks is called "glop", and it is.

The "urgencies", got to get to the bathroom fast, I've got the urgencies.

"Softies", nightwear, usually fleece. I'm tired, I'm going to put on my softies.

I've always twisted my hair and call the ringlet that's caused by the twisting my hank. My niece had a blanket that she called her hank. When I was a kid - 70's - being called a pussle gut was an insult although I STILL don't know what it means! Great post, lots of LOLs! Nancy

DS always said Crap paw and Dam maw for grandpa and grandma. He has changed his ways by now but I still get a giggle out of those words.

Misskittycat1 -- I checked, and the Dictionary of American Regional English lists "pussle gut" (alternately puzzle gut) as meaning pot-bellied.

Our family says "buh-sketti," similar to threejs' "Pa sketti." I am told we're copying the way I said spaghetti when I was little.

If something is crooked we say it's "all skewudgie." Not sure where that came from. Maybe from skewed.

When my neice was little she would call her pacifier a
"funt". We have no idea where it came from. She would call her Nana's boobs big kabongers. Also had a favorite teddy bear she called Debbie. She never knew anyone named Debbie, Kids are so creative . My sister and neice would come to visit us on Tuesday's. Have dinner then go home . I ask neice when she was coming back to see me.(she was 2)
She held out her little hand starting with the little finger saying Sunday ,Monday Tuesday holding up her middle finger, Then said I will see you Tuesday.
So to this day when we want to swear at someone out in public we just say Tuesday. Btw she is 42 yrs old today.

When I was a toddler, I called pretzels "Weebos". My daughter mispronounced many words- hamburger was hanguber, bicycle was bike-a-cycle.

My family is great for mixing up letters in words.
Butterflys end up being Flutterbys. (Which makes sense when you think about it.)
Instead of putting butterscotch on our ice cream we use scutterbotch.
For some reason a toad is a pook (rhymes with book)

My oldest was one for making her own words for her favorite things. When she would want a drink of something she would ask for Gee (hard g and long E) and when she wants tomatoes would ask for mee-ohs. My mom would get mad when I would let her use the words but they were so cute. We had a little one at day care ( who would be a teenager now) call her pacifier her wabu finally figured out it was her way of saying love you. We also call butterflies flutterbies, I think it sounds so much better. When Hayden is hungary, he will run around and shout EEE all the time, you tell hime it is time to eat and he will start saying EEE. Rhiannon does think that I have an oven in my tummy that is cooking the baby to get it ready. She told me that my sis that is pregnant with twins has 2 ovens in her tummy for the babies.
Long before she got pregnant, she declared that Kerry was going to have twins and that they were going to be named leaf and flower. It was over a year ago that she started it, now she is pregnant with twins and still swears that the babies will be leaf and flower.
All of my kids call my dad Pappo, which is also what I called my dad's dad. So he is pappo Bob and the other one is Pappo Bob. My dad just got liecense plates for his motorcycle with personal plates that say Pappo A ( last name starts with A)

Last thing is that we call popsicles colds in my house, well of course they are cold so the girls ask if they can have a cold.

I am sure that there are more, I am one that lets the kids use the words that they make up, it is cute and a part of the learning process.

My sister would ask for Eisenhower sauce, instead of Worchester Sause. For some reason it became LBJ and none of us can remember why, but we still use it. A presidential thing, obviously.

A great uncle would often mispronounce words which we love to use....

Evatx - we are also a fruit "cottontail" family.

When he was little, my husband invented a word "Etopi", but would never tell anyone what it meant. He's now 61 years old and even he doesn't know what it meant.

Between DH and me we have 8 (almost 9) grand/greatgrand kids under 6 years old. We've given up on names and call them all the "littles". Thus far, we have avoided enraging their parents by calling the wrong name at the wrong time!
If something is crooked it is catywhompus.
An item with an unknown name is a thingumit.
A swear word to use (we try not to use the normal ones) is dagnabbit...this word can be drawn o.u.t. to epic proportions depending on the problem at hand!

Can't think of too many, but there's probably quite a few. Offhand there's the "widgijammit", one of those things to hand me that I can't thing of the name offhand.

My uncle couldn't think of a guy's name one time while talking about him and just said "oh that, uh Whiskersnoot!" Which struck me so funny I've been calling people Ol' Whiskersnoot since.

Then there's the times I purposely mispronounce things to irritate some people. Whenever they mispronounce something I can't help but mispronounce things back at 'em. There's a town called Owatonna and a long time ago did an imitation of SNL's "The Whiners" started calling it Ottowanna. (Ottowanna go to Owatonna!!!) Was good for a lot of laughs and left the bosses shaking their heads. Course there were the canopies we'd put onto racks we'd put up and I just started referring to it as the Obiwan Canopy. And had all the workers asking to pass a "flip" and people would go "huh? A flip screwstik... you know, a Phillips screwdriver.

So I guess a lot is not necessarily made up words but lots of abbreviations. Grand Rapids is "Pids", St. Cloud is "Cloud" (occasionally Clod) and a friend calls the Twin Cities the Cids. The "Eau" in Eau Claire is generally rhyming with goo. And of course Duluth is DaLoot.... so when you ask dis bus go to Daloot? No, dis bus go BEEP-BEEP!

Now, who's gonna add some of these to the pet peeve thread??? :) And we get onto the kids for grammer!
