We have been working toward this goal for two years, clearing trees, waiting on contractor, waiting on contractor some more, etc.

Yesterday, the guy finally brought in the equipment to dig our pond in the back yard. I told DH that the area looks big when we're out there trying to mow it, but it looks pretty small with all of the big machinery out there!

If squint, you can see the tiny white flags (on the left) that mark the approximate perimeter of the pond. It will go north (to the right in the pic) past the green tractor. The side closest to the house will be out beyond the bird house, so we'll still have plenty of yard to mow and plenty of room for a deck (someday).

I have our "animal cam" set up to do time lapse photography so that we'll have a mini-movie (of sorts) of the event.

Pray that Ike takes his rain somewhere else!

Ooooh, heavy equipment, how fun! Will they let you drive and dig, Rita? That's going to be a good sized pond, will it be spring fed? Lined? Tell me more about this pond!

You'll have fun with your animal cam after it's finished and word gets out "free drinks at Rita's house!" lolol

By comparing measurements on the plan, it looks as if you have ap 47" aisle, counter-to-counter, between the range wall and the island. Maybe 34" between island, and fridge door handles, which appear to be elbow height. That's pretty tight, but just workable with a side-by-side or French door fridge, IMO, as long as someone isn't trying to get past while you have the fridge doors open. You can bring the cabinets out to 30", but that does not leave room for the corner susan, unless you give up the cabinet to the right of the sink. And the fridge still sticks out 8.75". Can you move the island a few inches, and/or recess the fridge (as long as it's not on an exterior wall) as fori and weedmeister suggested? Can you get shallower handles? Can the stub wall be cut back to 30"? Here's an option where I've cut back the stub wall and moved the fridge against it, thinking that might keep it from looking as if it sticks out all by itself. Also moved the base cabs out to 30", and uppers out to 15". I moved the island down and toward the sink a few inches, and you still appear to have 48" on that side. I rearranged the prep sink in the island, so that it's not back-to-back with the range. If that's not an exterior wall, you still could gain a couple of inches more by recessing the fridge. Any chance this would work?

I agree we need a to scale floor plan and you do not convert that garage you actually build a new addition to include that space You need an architect and depending on the rules maybe some permissions too . I have found in the UK many homes are listed even when you can't imagine why. I have never been one for keeping items that do not work with my design aesthetic so if modern is the aim those windows will need to go but you really need an architect to help make this happen and we need that floor plan.

That looks like it's going to be a good sized pond. If the contractors work fast enough perhaps Ike will fill it for you.

I frequently blog about my experiences on our tractor (which DH sold a week or so ago), and the answer is NO...they won't let me operate their equipment. Let's just say that is probably a good thing.

One of the delays has been that there is a very high water table in part of the dig area. So will it be spring fed? We don't know. We get a ton of runoff from upstream when it rains (in fact, we have a creek down there that maintains water most of the year). We are hoping we don't have trouble keeping water in it.

It will be for fishing or for DH to feed fish. Swimming? With turtles and snakes? Not this kid. LOL!

Yes, Ron. I talked to DH on the phone just now and we're hoping they will work fast enough to get 'er done in 4-5 days---and that the rain holds off that long. They brought in yet another backhoe this morning, and there are two operators, so...?

Oh my gosh, that's going to be sooooo neat when it's done. One more thing. Did you see the UFO in the middle of the picture? I think someone from the "red planet" is trying to land on your lawn. ~LOL~

Oh Rita, that will be so pretty. I hope to see your mini-movie when it's done too. I envy you, getting to have a big pond. I know it'll attract more wildlife to your back yard. But you get a lot now I see, with the pictures of your deer.
Have you been seeing a lot of hummingbirds? I haven't here at home. But I've got a couple at the cabin.

Boy how I would love to have a pond dug here. Denny had no interest in that at all...

I love my teeny tiny whiskey barrel liner pond....and my froggies who come to live during the summer.

Those UFOs are here frequently. As a matter of fact, I see them every time I look out that door!
:-)

We won't have a plastic liner, but we will eventually stock it with fish. After our several year drought ended last year, the first good rainfall brought lots of baby fish into the creek from the other ponds upstream.

We've waited so long, and this is a VERY exciting day for us. I'm having a hard time staying focused on work...my office windows look out to the back, so I'm watching them move dirt!

how lucky for you..."natural fish"...beware of the hunting birds, lol..we were wiped out again by a pesky huron! it ate our goldfish that looked like koi...(they'd gotten really big)

Wish I had a few yards of that top soil you'll be digging Rita. I love dirt and we're always needing it some where it seems. :)

Ohhh, how you and DH are gonna love that pond. I'd be excited too. Can't wait to see the finished pond. You do intend to keep us supplied with "during" and "finished" pics, right? :)

Wow! How cool is that?

I wish I would have taken a picture of my Cousin's FiancÃ©'s Pond this weekend. It was vinyl lined with sand over it and suitable for swimming. He had palm trees planted all around it and a little Cabana w/a bar. Oh yes and the finishing touch....pink Flamingos. LOL!

Rita, I do not know where you live but WHAT an awesome view....

If I had that "future" pond, guaranteed, there would be some skinny dippin' goin' on camera or not!!!!
