Has anyone heard about this? "Homes shifting due to drought"

According to these articles, houses are shifting - up to 10" - and suffering severe damage ($100,000+) due to the drought in the Midwest.

The ground dries out so badly that it starts to contract and shrink and the house settles down into the compacted soil.

The only cure is to insert new steel piers to stabilize the foundation. The cost is in the tens of thousands of dollars and home owners insurance does NOT pay a dime.

In one of these stories, the front half of the house went one way and the back half went the other way.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I'm *more* than curious if this is affecting mostly newer homes (post-1970s) or older homes as well. Has anyone here experienced this? And if so, how old is your house?
