Well, I just typed out a long-winded message and somehow clicked in the wrong place and it disappeared right before my very eyes!! So, the short version is - some people asked for more pics of my holiday so I got a bit carried away and uploaded quite a few. They are at Photobucket, user name Jahalaro and password is canberra52.

I haven't worked out how to separate them into albums, so it is a bit disorganised. Hopefully I put the right info on each as I relied on my memory and not my journal.

There are a few from where I lived before and a couple from here but most of my Aus travelling was before I had a digital camera and I have not scanned them into the computer yet. Posting here might be the necessary impetus to get that job done.

I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoy pictures of the USA and Canada. I can't get enough of new places to see.

On another thread someone mentioned about me being possibly the only Aussie posting here but I am sure I saw a Cheryl Down Under who lives on the other side of Australia. Hi Cheryl!

Beth, I love your photos. Those old buildings are awesome and just look at the parrot and sheep. I have a couple of sheep photos that were taken in Mississippi. Thanks so much for sharing.

Doesn't it make you just want to scream when you lose a post, especially a long one, before submitting it. I've done that a few times myself.

I thought of Cheryl the other day when someone said you were the only person here from Australia. I haven't seen her post in quite a while. I hope everything is okay with her.

Beth, I'm so glad you did this! I was going to post separately, asking you about your pictures. Maybe because my middle name is Campbell, I'm especially drawn to the scenes of Scotland.

How old is that cemetery you showed us the other day? And re today's picture, it must be quite a feeling to visit a place so steeped in history that you can walk where Mary, Queen of Scots walked.

Glad you liked the trip through my eyes!! I was not really a tourist in the truest sense since I was there on a William Evans Visiting Fellow award from the Univ, of Otago....had to actually work with my colleague in the lab and visit the south island on weekends, evenings!! I would love to go back and see more, but I had the best of it since I had dinner with my friends every night at their house in Dunedin and got a personalized tour of the points we went to. The country is so beautiful and so diverse.....to be able to drive from the beaches of Christchurch through the southern Alps to the rain forest's of the west coast in a single day is amazing!! The botanical gardens are stunning and HUGE, but of course. like most botanical gardens most of the plants are imports rather than natives. The plants from South Africa do amazingly well there because of the climates being similar and the wall of Clivia around 100 feet long must be stunning when in full bloom!! I'll post a couple of more pics for those that did not look at the album: This is Sandfly Bay so named because the wind blows constantly and keeps the sand in your face!! Here are a couple of NZ Sea Lions having a tussle: A couple of additional Protea that were blooming at the Dunedin Botanical Garden: This is a Maori meeting house......you can not enter the grounds unless invited, which of course I was not :o) And for the bird lovers out there here is an awful shot of an Albatross......this is the only place in the world where they nest on an inhabited island so it was worth the trip on a boat around the front side to see them in flight :o) Dan

The amount of misinformation on gardenweb boards over the years is very annoying to me. So many people talking out of their a--. It is a rare case that someone is authentically, forgivably mistaken. As pineresin is when he states no large S. semprevirens are found outside zn 8 & 9. "z8 is a tad marginal for Coast Redwoods" LMAO! In fact, there are two 90' coast redwoods in zn 7b Williamsburg, VA, and has been since around 1955 when they were planted. I personally saw that tree after 0F in 1994 and it was uninjured. Lightning, hurricanes, and inept college landscaping crews are the greatest threat to those trees now, if 1979 and 1985 could not kill them off. One was seriously damaged by Katrina. Furthermore, one of the best informed horticulturalists in the Washington, DC, area, discovered a large old CR tree in a 7a suburb of DC. He has a Pineresin level knowledge and there is absolutely no chance he was mistaken. I think he said it was around 40' but I could be mistaken. Such a tree would have survived well below 0F as recently as 1994. He tried to get Hines to micropropagate it as a hardy coast redwood but could not get them interested. (he is personal friends with higher-ups at Hines, and has introduced other plants through them) People don't seem to understand/appreciate that in the last several hundred thousand years the Earth's climate has experienced a great deal of variability and that most plants have resistance to conditions well beyond those in their current native ranges. Pictures have been posted of the test Wollemias in DC, after around 7-9F (sorry Pineresin you will have to translate) and some were almost uninjured appearing. That is probably 10F colder than the minimum in the current location where W.n. was found. I grew for many years a Fuchsia regia from the Orgon mountains of Brazil, a 9b roughly like the climate of J'burg, ZA, yet this plant tolerated 0F with ground frozen solid 6 inches deep. Such conditions would not have occurred in its native range for at least several thousand years, probably. Not all plants retained the genes that either purposefully or surreptitiously permit such survival of course.

looks like nice parkland! are those fruit trees or just ornamental? by the way, some growers from thailand ship internationally - it all depends on agro import rules where you are and how fast the plants can ship so as not to die! may be better selection/shipping from australia? rainy Hilo on big island in hawaii /carribbean/thai/philippines/aussi tropics - would be similar to your area somewhat. there are subsets of garden web for australia/europe/etc i'll poke around to find some links for seed/fruit shippers in asia. i like learning and reading about tropical anything :). by the way you should have some incredible alocasia/colocasias (elephant ears) locally - are you familiar at all with them? colocasias are edible. prime example is taro - traditional hawaiian crop. not that i like it myself. but there are various kinds of very tasty tropical sweet potatoes that you might grow instead: yams, batatas, boniatos (cuban white sweet potato). also you should be able to grow monstera deliciosa - it produces an edible large fruit (cousin of swiss cheese houseplant). peas like it cool, but some beans can def take hot/humid like lima beans and some you can eat fresh from the pod. and all are available as seeds. e.g. from australia but shipping only locally - see tropical beans at the end. http://www.greenharvest.com.au/SeedOrganic/VegetableSeeds/Beans.html it's worth looking into indian stuff (which i know very little about, except i can see it in the freezer in the supermarket!). they grow all sorts of beans/long squashes in the steamy south. oh, you might be able to get some seeds/info/sites thru UK on that! found what i think is a good place in philippines (at list to start looking, not sure about international shipping) - info on fruit trees.ships nursery trees. http://www.dizonexoticfruittrees.com/index2.htm it was referenced last year - Q on shipping/visting with recommendation on http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=3111.0 seems to be a very active and useful forum too! here some useful links info/growing hawaii/fl/china http://www.lycheesonline.com/links.cfm this is Caribbean puerto rican site(us territory): they ship internationally. even just getting familiar with names can take time:) http://www.montosogardens.com/tropical_fruit_trees.htm

amberley I like a lot of color too as you can see. This is the third color on my kitchen. My whole downstairs is gold and red with blue accents or gold and blue with red accents so I kept going for golds in my kitchen. When I finally brought my cabinet door to the free design girl at BM, she told me I couldn't use yellow with the peachy green undertone in my cabinets. Who knew? She picked out the tumeric, dijon and citrine and I have to say, it has brought my whole downstairs to a better place. I just used flat BM white ceiling paint and semi gloss BM white on trim. They were both the premixed whites . The design girl at the paint store told me it is a bit stark and recommended a different white but I really like trim to pop and did not want to repaint my whole downstairs trim (I just repainted it 6 months ago). I will see if I can find the white she recommended. I highly recommend the Aura line. Although expensive at $55 per gallon, it is scrubbable, self priming, can be touched up (even the eggshell and shinier) and has amazing coverage with a 1 hour recoat time so it ended up saving me time and money I would spend spent priming. With the rapid dry time, I do 1 room with 2 coats in a day from dismantling to putting it back together, including trim (a full day 8am-10 pm). When my husband complains about the price of the paint, I tell him I can always hire a painter instead. Great stuff! I still haven't attempted the scan. Maybe I will try it now but I have to find a USB cord.

Beth,thank you for sharing your wonderful vacation pictures. Looking at the magnificent old buildings and the history associated with it all is just so inspiring. Makes me want to book a vaction there myself. Just one question if I may, how was the food?

Linda, thanks for fixing the link. I just couldn't work out how to do it. Glad you liked the pictures. I took about 1700 altogether, so had to pick a good mix. Just in case you haven't had enough (lol) I just added some more - I think they have come up at the beginning of the album.

Hi Alisande, the Abbey dates from the latter half of the 12th century and the burial site from 1607. Many of the gravestones are unreadable but there are some local family burials right to the last few years. When I went in spring it was beautiful with daffodils growing everywhere. I have a a few more old graveyard ones which I will upload and show soon if you like. I enjoy old cemeteries and wandered in many while I was there looking for my Dad's family. I made a mistake - the Abbey is at Dundrennan in Galloway, not Ayrshire.
June, I have to say that the food was quite a mix. I was on a budget as far as food went and because I was on my own, did not go out at night much. I mostly picked up sandwiches, fruit and soup, plus cheap meals at one of the department store chains. I bought a thermos flask for the 3 weeks I hired cars and drank coffee and ate snacks, including lots of chocolate. In Edinburgh, I treated myself to a nice hotel room and enjoyed room service meals that were good. One really cold day, I found a really tasty curry and sat near a loch where there was not another person in sight. Bliss. The low point was a deep-fried meat pie in Edinburgh. Pure grease. We Aussies love our meat pies but they are baked pastry, not baked and then deep fried. Really, really yukky!! I did have an incredible lemon tart at the Edinburgh hotel later that night which made me feel better.
I love the colder weather and made a point of travelling before the tourist season began - April and early May, so was able to find B & B and guest house accommodation easily and relatively cheaply. Some highs and lows. I only booked my first two nights and last one before I left home. It was a real leap of faith to prove to myself that I could do things by myself. Still haven't worked up the courage to eat a meal in a restaurant alone but will do it one day.
I would recommend Scotland to anyone who loves history and scenery. The driving was very easy - of course they drive on the same side of the road as me which helps.

Hi Beth, thanks so much for showing us your great photos - they really are lovely. I would love to go to Scotland - my DH's mum came from there. It's funny that here in Australia we think that if something was built in the 1800's it's really old, whereas over in Scotland and England, their history and heritage goes back for many hundreds of years. Anyway, it's nice to have another Aussie on this forum - even though I mainly lurk, the KT is a great place to visit with so many nice people. Welcome and keep the pictures coming!!!!

AWESOME pictures Beth. Just awesome. I grew up in "the old country" (Germany), and thus, for years didn't even have the appreciation for the old buildings, castles and towns.

Now, living in the new country (US) I can even marvel at the "old" structures here. :)
