I am going to put a farm sink in my kitchen when we get around to re doing it. I have an old sink that has the porcelain drainboards on both sides, that I'd like to use, but it is too long for my counter. The one in it now is a modern, double stainless sink. I have a smaller old sink with a drainboard on one side that I am going to put in the pantry.

I grew up with a farm sink and much prefer a double sink. We redid our kitchen a few years ago and I made the mistake of putting in a deeper double sink. I am tall, and a deeper sink means that the bottom of the sink is further away from me, so I find myself bending over too much at the sink. If I were short, the deeper sink might be preferable, but otherwise I do not recommend it.

We have a ss double sink. One side is large and deep (think a bath tub for a three year old) and the other side is about 1/3 - 1/4 of that and shallower. That is where the disposal is. This smaller side can fit a dinner plate in width so I use it when hand washing dishes. We installed the sink in a kitchen redo 10 years ago and I still love it.

Our sink is a Kohler enamel over cast iron single bowl. It's large, approximately 31"x22" with a depth of around 9". The style is "Bakersfield" and it's been around for a while. I love, love, love it! It's wide enough to handle baking sheets and deep enough to soak messy pots and pans. It cleans up nicely with a little Bar Keeper's Friend. We have it in Biscuit (a creamy off-white). Ours is 10 years old and still looks (almost) as good as new. I knew when we renovated our kitchen 10 years ago that I wanted a large single bowl sink after having double sinks and not being able to really scrub all my cooking equipment because of lack of room. I haven't had one day of regret ;o)

My sink is just like Cheekybone's....stainless, one side deeper than the other - great for large platters, etc.

I just got a double stainless sink, about 8" deep. I like it. My old one came with the trailer and it was all banged up & chipped looking. DH said it was fibergalss.

I have a 30" professional Franke(PSX110-30). It's 18 gauge ss, single bowl, 9" deep, with a wire grid on the bottom. The grid keeps the sink from scratchng or denting AND you can leave things sitting on it to dry. LOVE my sink!

An apron front type sink would be even larger and better!

This is my sink...I ripped out the stainless steel as soon as I could and had hubster install this one...I love love love my sink!

Yes I flyladied that day! The right side is nice and deep for washing big pots and pans and the left isn't quite as deep but good for rinsing and houses the disposal! We've since replaced the faucet...it went bad but it's basically the same...it has the sprayer you pull out...the left thing is a soap dispenser and next to that is a filtered water dispenser...

I love my kitchen sink. It's stainless and very deep. Perfect for filling a pot with water when cooking seafood or spaghetti. We put it in in 1987. No longer have the paperwork and I don't recall the manufacturers name.

Mine is just a regular SS sink, but a little deeper. When we lived in the boonies I had one like cheeky described by it was porcelain-enameled cast iron. It was perfect!

My sink looks identical to liz_ga, and I also love, love, love it!!! We installed our garbage disposal on the smaller side, though, and that was a mistake. I'll have to get it changed out some day.

I have a double SS sink which is deeper than usual. Both sides are the same width. I wash dishes in the right side (with the disposal) and set them in the drainer which is in the left side.

We have a Blanco stainless steel undermount double sink. I love the configuration. I love the look. It's not the deepest design out there. I think it's 9" deep on the left side and 8" on the right. We have a steel grate on the left side which acts as a dish drainer and I love that too.

White porcelain undermount 36" wide. Left side is 9" deep and takes up about 2/3 the width. Right side is 7" deep -- remaining 1/3 of width. Left side also has a 'bump-out' in its upper left corner that allows me to set two 12" pans down in the sink to soak. (I find that I would have prefered both sinks at the 7" depth.) Single handle pull-out stream/spray faucet.

Prep sink is white porcelain undermount 15" round w/bar sink faucet (arches up over the sink).

I use the Bon Ami too. ("Hasn't scratched yet!" LOL)

Liz_ga I love your sink. I think it may be what I'm looking for. What brand is it and do you like having the disposal in the smaller side? I like to soak crusty pans and just dump all the water down with all the bits into the disposal.

Mike- I had one like liz's and if I ever did a double sink again I'd have both sinks the same depth. You have to be very careful when pouring water into the shallower sink that it doesn't splash up and onto the counter.

Mine is a stainless steel corner sink. LOVE it. Before we redid the kitchen, the sink was a double porcelain one, with drain boards on both sides. As a result, I had about 18" of useable counterspace. NOT good for someone who cooks as much as I do. When we were planning our redo, I was told that a double corner sink is pretty much out of the question, because the angle needed to fit one in, comes way too far out into the room, so we went with the stainless. I really have never missed having a second sink in the kitchen, and I LOVE having 5 FEET of counterspace now. Since I have a dishwasher, having the sink in the corner isn't a big deal. I would say this, if you decide to put your sink in the corner, don't put your dishwasher next to it--there's no room to reach the sink when the DW is open. I noticed that problem at a neighbor's house and solved it by putting my dishwasher a little further away from the sink.

In the country, we have a 50 year old porcelain sink. That will be going soon. Can't stand the upkeep necessary to keep those things looking pristine. Stainless is SO much easier to care for and you don't have the chipping issue.

I have the double SS Blanco that Jodi has, and I have a small drainer basket in the deep side. I can hand wash things and put in there, and not on the counter. It's the best I have ever had.

Under mount Kindred D-Shaped Stainless. Love it. All stainless is not created equal, however. You have to do your homework.

I had a porcelain Kohler and while it was OK, it's not nearly as nice as the stainless steel.

I have a double, stainless sink and love it. I wish it had a bult in drain board, too. This one was installed in my house when it was built over 30 yrs ago, and I have lived with all that time. here's my reommended specifications.

1. Double sinks, equally sized.

2. Sink to include a drain board. (Mine does not have one and I wish it did.)

3. Sink material: stainless steel

4. Garbage grinder installed in sink half opposite the drain board.

5. Spayer. Optional. MIne gets very little use and is a source of maintence.

6. The divider between the two sinks should lower than the sink rims. This provides an overflow if one half is unattended and overfills. However, for this to work, the drain plug in the other half must be open. (I have not seen kitchen sinks with an overflow outlet in each sink half. Could be there is a sanitation problem with these.)

Also consider the garbage grinder. It pays to install a good one. The one that came with my house failed within 4 years - threw a grinder knife. I replaced it with a unit from Sears in 1980 and that one is still going strong. it has one good feature: It is reversible. Each time the grinder is stopped and started again, it runs in the opposite direction. This helps to keep the grinder clear of gunk.

I have an enormous soapstone sink..over 10 inches deep and over two feet long. It's a single and I love it. Of course I have soapstone counters too and a foot deep apron on the front. The garbage disposal is in the center and the sprayer is in the gooseneck faucet. I wish I had a baby to bath in it.

Yes!! I love my sink, and since it is not the cookie cutter sinks mentioned here I will chime in. Our kitchen sink is stainless,has three basins. Two are large and deep. My fry pan can soak in them. My pasta pot is easily filled. The third basin sits between the two larger ones, contains the disposal drain and comes in very handy when rinsing dishes. Jodi your kitchen/sink are BEAUTIFUL, but I have to wonder if you wash dishes at that sink? I do not see space for the dishes in process?

I love my sink too and it's hardly what you'd call a cooker cutter. It's the same sink Nicole has - a 30" Franke single bowl. Heavy duty.

American Standard Offset Enamel, when we redid the kitchen last year the first thing to go was the stainless sink.

When we did a mini kitchen refresh a few years back, I chose a single basin Kohler SS Single basin. The hasin is about 29"wide and almost 8" deep.
I love it.

Mine is still in the box in the garage as the kitchen remodel hasn't begun yet but I chose a single bowl, undermount Blanco Anthracite sink. It's beautiful and I can't wait to see it installed along with the new cabinets and granite. I've had a double bowl stainless since we moved here and I'm so ready for it to be gone. Demo is scheduled to start Sept. 7th! Now, who wants to talk faucets? LOL

I re-did my kitchen in 2005. I now have a stainless single sink, very deep, and I like it. Good for filling pots with water for spaghetti,etc. My Mom redid her kitchen just this year, she put in a double porcelain sink. To each her own.

lynn_d -- That's my sink too. Mine is undermount. (I want to be able to sweep stuff off the granite and into the sink, not have to go over a 'hump' with a drop-in.)

I chose this for the big width (36 or 38, not sure) and the shape, but I wouldn't install another American Standard -- the finish wears off easily and it chips easily. My Kohler porcelain sink looks exactly the way it did in the showroom. I've had to 'patch' two chips on the A.S. sink and the surface is wearing poorly in the smaller bowl. I don't understand using racks to 'save' a sink -- another thing to keep clean. The Koheler hasn't needed 'saving'. Both are 10 years old.

Has anyone had experience with a Kindred 20 gauge SS sink? I just bought one and I think I'm regretting it before I even get it delivered.

I would love a white farmers sink too...not a fan of stainless steel which I have had for years...

I can't remember the band of my SS 20 gauge sink but I love mine. My old cheap porcelain was so bad I would never buy another.

We have a double SS and I don't like it at all. I'd prefer one big sink that I can wash cookie sheets and other large items in.

I don't know if it's because we have hard water or what, but the SS looks pretty bad now after 15 years. I can't keep it shiny and spotless.

I prefer off white sinks and appliances. The sink in my last house was wonderful. It was molded and you could scrub it with comet and it still shined because it was the same all the way through. When this house was built the sink was not porcelain, so figured it was like my last one. Wrong....it is molded, but doesn't shine anymore.
