Food trucks

Seems to be the thing now!

Do you purchase from them?

There's one in my area, that is the local craze that sells cupcakes. Expensive $3 for one cupcake, but delicious. Haven't tried one I didn't like. Especially the wedding cake one.

When we are in the area we try them. A group of food truck operators, have rented a large empty lot from the city and they gather in one spot. It is equiped with water, power and potties! It is fun to have such a variety of offerings. Many of the higher end places, now have food trucks also. I have not had any of the cupcakes from this new cupcake craze, but have heard good things about them.

I haven't but I would if I were somewhere they had them. They don't come out here in the sticks.

Glenda, are those by any chance Gigi's Cupcakes? They have a store in Trussville. Very good cupcakes but with the amount of frosting they have I can't eat a whole one.

    Food Truck Coleslaw

I think I can imagine how the MM coleslaw would taste and it's something I'd like! I pretty much love all salads though. The cilantro does make it dicey to serve to a crowd -- my dad and several other people I know have always said that cilantro tastes like soap to them. Rusty, if I imagine the taste properly, I'd think about substituting an optional garnish of sliced green onions (the green part only so it's more mild).

Expecting an increase in Covid here

    Q

    Comments (153)
Read the local obits in the paper yesterday. A man died after contracting covid 19 according to his obit. He was a hospice patient too so they didn't count him in the numbers, at least not from the current total of 1 death from way back in March or April. Our state reviews the deaths on a case by case basis to determine if they should be counted in the numbers, I don't know what the time frame is on adding them but the governor says they have a bunch of deaths yesterday waiting for review . Yesterday was one of the highest total of new cases in the state and I'm pretty sure the highest deaths in one day, 18. It's been almost two weeks since the festival downtown that I mentioned when I started this post. Our cases locally haven't gone up that much yet. They're having another festival this weekend.

I've never even seen a food truck. Wonder where they're hiding.

They're all over LA, but I have never eaten from one. It's usually too hot, and lines are too long for me. We have tons of gourmet cupcake stores, though.

We have food trucks in my area, primarily taco trucks. Initially, I was a little skeptical but I'm a regular customer now.

A recent survey reported that food trucks are cleaner, overall, than restarants. They're not hiding anything.....why would you think so?

I'm a big fan of food trucks. There are many that operate in Huntsville and they seem to do a great business.....if they're good.

My favorites so far are a taco truck (fabulous, inventive), and a BBQ truck (crazy good). There are others that are memorable, too. Cupcakes are a fading fad here, but one of the chain trucks is still viable and doing a good business.

Use common sense when considering food truck fare. The experience isn't for everybody, but the food can be really, really good.

Don't have any locally, but if the lines are that long, they must be doing something right.

The old food "trucks" I remember sold prepared stuff, like a vending machine. Around for ages are the "concession trailers" selling fresh cooked stuff (like at a fair). They come for special events down at the beach. Elephant Ears are still popular.

When we worked, there was a hot dog truck right outside the main door to the building (which housed 7,500 employees). It was run by Jim--a retired DC policeman and Vietnam veteran. The cafeteria manager was upset because Jim had a booming business, so he reported him to the health department. Jim got a perfect score on the inspection...but then they inspected the cafeteria, and closed it down for weeks!

One employee learned the hard way that Jim was NOT the right person to hire for a hit. The guy wanted to have his wife killed because he was in debt and wanted her insurance money. Jim went along with him, until money changed hands; the guy was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in jail. (The dumb wife took him back when he got out of jail.)

My BIL owns two food trucks and he does very well. His trucks have been viewed on Eat ST, magazines, etc. Our city and city council embraced them in 2010 and they are extremely popular. They do a downtown lunch trade, they go to food and night markets, various sporting events, (we have a pro ultimate team and they go to their games) they go to outdoor sales, street cultural days (Italian days, etc).

Twice each summer a bunch of the food trucks will go to a huge parking lot and do tasting menus for the public.

They are extremely busy and popular. We don't have super cold snowy winters, just rainy ones so they even do lunch trades during the winter or they will take phone call orders and do delivery to the office towers if the order is big enough.

They haven't caught on here. I see them on construction sites and think that's a GREAT idea.

We have a chain of locally owned French pastry shops here. I can get a HUGE 6" x 6" flaky treat for $1.50.

They have been a huge thing here in Nor Cal for a few years. I have had some amazing food, often better than a fine dining establishment.

    I didn't say WHAT they're hiding, I said WHERE. A joke.

Yep. We have them now and then around here but not daily. My DH has a part time job hauling frac sand. He said a local homeowner has a truck at the end of his driveway. He said that business is booming for him. The local drivers and workers at the pit go there throughout the week. I guess he has different specials every day. I think it's a great idea but I can see how some restaurant owners may not like it. The restaurant owners have to pay real estate taxes and the trucks do not. I know that some towns here have started charging a fee to have the trucks in their town. One town (by the frac sand town) put the fees so high, that the trucks can't afford to set up there. But it hasn't seemed to stop them. They just set up outside of city limits and into a different jurisdiction.

We have lots of the Mexican food vendors all around the Houston area. Some nicer than others.
The food trucks like on TV I have not seen around our area but I would definitely like to see them and try their foods.

The Mexican ones are the only ones out here in the country...small towns, but I understand they are catching on all over the place and quite gourmet fare in the cities. This fellow
(I don't know how to explain his "relationship" to my husband...it's complicated) has one in Austin, called Casey's City Grill and now he builds food trucks.

We have seen the Mexican ones very often in California and less here in Oregon. However.... Really Upscale trucks and caterers recently have been at most Vineyards here when they have entertainment nights. Very POSH and $$$$ but wonderful too. What they provide is usually dessert-like stuff, but it does depend on the venue.

I think I'm in the same general area as matti5 (greater SF Bay Area). They've been trendy in last few years. My experience is that they offer better food than is typical at events like outdoor food and wine festivals and downtown art festivals, but I'd never say I had anything from one that was more than about average. Many were less than average.

There are none around here and I have never seen one in other towns either.

we have had food trucks at our small city outside of Orlando for atleast 3 years now. Food Truck Bazaar is a group that organizes hundreds of trucks to go to a different city or spot. Casselberry, my city, has food trucks at city hall park on the 2nd fri of each month, along w a live band and art & craft booths. every city around me has their own date, along w several other spots like Fashion Square Mall which gets about 50+ trucks.

My favs are Monsta Lobsta, Cafe Rouge, Swede Dish, YumYum Cupcake, Tamale Co, Charlie's Bakery (famous in Orlando), the crepe company, Dixieland Diner, Midnight Sun Ice Cream Sandwiches. One our favs is also Sit & Stay Pet Cafe that had to go on hiatus, my furgirls love their organic goodies! ~ liz

There are a couple that come to the campus around lunchtime during the school year. Now that classes have started up they are back, so about a week ago I went down to where they park, because it slightly closer than the restaurants I usually go to. One of them serves Asian noodles and/or dumplings the other has Australian meat pies. As I walked there I intended to get the noodles and dumplings, but apparently so did half the student body.
There were at least 100 people waiting in line at the noodle wagon, and no one in line at the meat pie cart. Mmmmm mediocre meat pies.

My DDs PTA job this year is food trucks. Any time they have a family evening event, the PTA brings in district approved local food trucks. However, I am flabbergasted that LAUSD takes a cut off the top before the rest goes to the local school's PTA.

For several years now I've seen a group of about ten food trucks lined up in the parking lot of the bowling alley next to my office every Tuesday night. It's a group of trucks that belong to the OC DinDin-a-GoGo.

I really should try it sometime, I drive past them on my way home every week.
