Remarkable 100-year-old color photos of Russia

Boston.com (The Big Picture) always has great photos. Here's what the introduction says about these:

With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun.

They really are pretty amazing. Do we have anyone of Russian decent here?

Not of Russian decent and I know very little about photography, but I can admire amazing work when I see it. Wow... a century ago someone could take photos like that?

Thanks for posting this site, it is amazing, even my 7 year old loved looking at the pictures. These are absolutely amazing.

Woot! A positive ID, and such a lovely one too! I look forward to it flowering all summer for many years to come. Interestingly, this is the second potential link I've found to Portland. I do wonder who the rose lover was. On to pink rose #3. This rose is about 6' tall, upright, and shows no signs of pruning. It's quite vigorous and is pushing new canes up from the ground. It's growing in the roots of a Western Red Cedar that is at least 100 years old (we've seen it in aerial photos from the 1920s, and it wasn't small then). Quite thorny, this one is a repeat bloomer that bloomed continually all summer last year and has no hips. It's growing in a different area than the majority of the roses, so it could be from a different era, although so far they all seem to be from around the same time period. The buds are a coral pink, but it blooms out to a somewhat shocking bright pink. Someone who gardened here was a pink lover - the majority of roses are pink as are most of my 30' tall rhododendrons.

Are we sure it is just stain? Or could that be WAX that was never maintained? The way to tell. Drop a bit of water on the surface and then let it sit for a few minutes. If it turns white (like a ring on a coffee table) then it is wax of some sort. And the photos did load BTW.

Have you gotten a bid on the heated floors, including the estimated cost to run them? I was surprised that none of the pros recommended it. Even the guy selling me a solar panel system disrecommended it (even though it would mean I’d buy more solar panels, he thought it wasn’t worth it). Might be different in your neck of the woods, but FYI. FWIW, in my 1940 bungalow, I hemmed and hawed on flooring (considering tile, old fashion Marmoleum etc) and finally landed on hardwood floors to match the adjoining rooms. When I was looking at tile and marmoluem, it limited my design choices for the rest of the kitchen; I had a hard time finding floor tile that looked good w/ the countertops I liked. The floor tile became too much of a statement and very limiting. The wood felt more neutral and warm (and it is warm, compared to tile. You don’t need to put radiant heat under wood flooors). If cost is an issue, you could buy top quality slippers for everyone in the family ;) I have some Ugg-knock-offs that are clogs. ;)

All of your feedback has been super helpful, and I’ve spent a great deal of time working through all the ideas. Susan Davis mentioned the idea of just cleaning and painting everything. As I think through this, it occurs to me that we may very well be able to go this route to some degree and still create a very nice home. Mainly, this would entail keeping the original kitchen cabinets and counters. Amy said the floor tiles and cabinets are timeless. Maybe the cabinets will look classic once they’re appropriately painted. Would the cabinets be painted a solid color or are there artists who could paint a nice design? Is it possible to add rollers to the drawers? Julieste’s idea to buy cabinetry from a similar home being remodeled is really creative, but I don’t think there’s enough space to add cabinets and the amount of cabinet space is probably good enough. The black tile on the counter around the sink is in good condition. Some of the tiles on the counter by the wall of cabinets have hairline cracks but otherwise seem okay to me. We’d need to replace the sink and faucet. In the bathroom, we’d replace the bathtub/shower. Lyndee Lee suggested moving the refrigerator outside of the nook area would create a useful dining or office space and that’s a fantastic idea. I added a photo of the archway leading to the nook. I can’t see the refrigerator fitting inside the kitchen area but there’s sufficient room inside the laundry room. In this case, it’s probably best to remove the door to the laundry room. All the major money would go to electrical, plumbing and A/C, plus painting. Is it best to hire a contractor who’s going to hire these four subcontractors, or would it be as good or possibly better if I hire them directly? It's 1,200 sq ft, 2 bedrooms 1 1/2 baths. Amazing! It makes you realize that 1910 wasn't really all that different from 2010. Life really was in color, not sepia tone.

Those were amazing! It was very hard to wrap my head around the fact that these photos are 100 years old and not taken yesterday with subjects dressed in costume. Such clear and colorful photographs!!

Wow! GORGEOUS photos! I am of Russian descent (maternal grandparents both immigrated 1900-1910) and I am fascinated with looking at old (1900-1970) photos from Russia. I look for "familiar" faces, and have occasionally found some, but without documentation to track the face down into a name. My genealogy stops at all 4 of my grandparents getting off a boat at Ellis Island. BTW, I was told as a kid that I was "Polish" probably because growing up in the 50's & 60's post WW2 it was a "safe" ethnicity to be. I didn't find out until I was 38 that I was half Russian. And I didn't discover until after my step-mother died, when I was 56, that I was half Austrian. I'm not Polish anymore. Thanks for the photos!

These photos are fantastic. The shots could have been made by using three cameras mounted on a common rail and carefully aligned with each other. All three cameras would be tripped at the same time by a special release cable. (Now, I'll have to go back and read how it was really done.)

I am struck by the harshness of the landscapes. It is reflected in people's faces, but the colorful architecture and clothing adds flair to their lives.

The railroad bridge was interesting. I noticed that the supports had ice and debris breakers built on the upstream side. That would be the angled prow with a sharp edge.

Not long before these pictures were made, Russia suffered through a drought and famine. I'm not sure about the date, but I think it was in the 1890s. I have a book titles, "Letters to the President", where a grateful thank you is recorded from the Russian Ambassidor to the US thanking the US citzens for a ship load of food stock and shipment of wheat.

Years ago I found a site with a story about Chernobyl made by a Russian lady. Her father was one of the scientist that worked on the site after the problem. She drove through the site on a motor cycle with a camera and took a lot of pictures and had a journal. The pictures were indescribable. She was forced to shut it down once by the government. It was very sad, but educational. There are still places now one can go in. The good thing about it was the wild ponies are coming back in. I printed it all out in case the site was shut down again. She had to wear a badge that showed radiation levels. How easy we forget.
