Looks good, especially the raspberries. They are my favorite. I am just getting tomatoes, peppers, squash and have been getting lettuce all year. I am planting my fall garden already. Here we can grow cool season veggies all year.

Ron, you seem to be a good gardener. This is something we were discussing tonight, why are our cukes bitter and why doesn't our onions get big? My husband is a good gardener otherwise but we've had this problem almost every year. We've had such cool weather this year that we don't have ripe tomatoes yet. I think we've eaten snow peas every night for seems like months and kept the neighbors supplied too. Pat

Patruth--from my limted experience with cukes, mine get bitter if they are on the fine too long, turning yellow, but also if I've not watered them enough during a high heat spell.

We've had cool weather here, also, in Minn. I don't have an answer for the cukes. Onions seem to do best when planted as early as possible. One possibility may be the "natural" fertilizer. (The chicken and duck manure gets put on the garden.) I have read that too much nitrogen can cause cucumbers to be soft.

I asked DH when our zucchini would be ripe, he said he didn't plant any. Dang! I LOVE them sauteed in a little olive oil, with some diced onion thrown in. (how the heck do you spell the past tense of saute?).

We have a brand-new garden this year, finally after moving here 2 1/2 years ago. so far we have only radishes which were planted late. Hope to have zukes, cukes, tomatoes and much more. We hope for a lot but expect little since it was planted late. We are laying down cardboard and newspaper and covering it with 10-12" of black dirt and mulching heavily with straw. My old garden was complete, no tilling. Just move the mulch and plant, replace when plants were big enough. Someday the new garden will be at that point. I am not used to growing in heavy clay-based black dirt, old garden started out as pure sand. I have to learn new methods of gardening now. The flowers in the dozen or so retaining wall beds are doing pretty well, at least the ones that survived last year's drought.

why doesn't our onions get big?
Patruth, it makes a big difference in the variety of onions you grow. Depending upon where you live, you need to plant either long, or short day sets.

Long-day and Short-day Onions
I found (and then lost) the name of an on line site that sells a wonderful variety of different onions and garlics....noting which is long and short day. They are pricey compared to the onions sets bought locally, but they (the ones ordered) should in the end, produce the big onions.

I'm going to ask at the Allium Forum what sites might be good to order from, and get an order in early next season. I would love to grow large onions for salsa making and for drying.

I think I have heard that if cukes don't get enough water they can be bitter. I have been watering mine more this year and they don't seem to be as bitter as before and they have been growing better.

Beautiful Ron! What a nice looking bounty. I envy you big time. We've had such a nasty, hot and dry summer that I've had to pull up my squash plants and the tomatoes are hanging on, but they look very sad. Not expecting much of a crop from them either.

I might be wrong but I'm thinking it could be a Midwest term.
Your photo was wonderful. I wish my veggies looked like that. I have had two tomatoes and a couple of green peppers.

Nice! i'm a little jealous about the raspberries lol. i can't wait for the worst of summer to end. our veggie seasons are very different from the rest of the country. we are ending tomatoes and about the start our new crop of tomatoe seedlings. peppers keep going but cucumbers and squashes are petering out and will be replanted for fall. not alot grows well in our summers, atleast not as well as it did in chicago. but we do grow well for the rest of the yr and come oct the veggie garden was over in chicago lol and that's just getting to the middle of our fall. happy growing! ~ liz

lynn d, I'm not sure what variety of onion it is. Something new that Joel (my brother that has a greenhouse) had this year. I'll have to ask him.
Stacie, yup, this time of year is great when the question of what's for supper can be answered by taking a walk through the garden.
Lois, I'm not sure about the word plethora. It's not one I use a lot. Once in a while it just seems to fit. I never thought about it being a midwest thing. Did they say plethora in the movie Fargo?
liz, I'm jealous of you and everyone else that's south of here in the middle of January. In New Mexico we had peach trees. Nine of them in our backyard. One year bigbaby and I canned 84 quarts of peaches! You just can't buy a decent peach up here. They have all been picked green so that when they finally do ripen they're tasteless. There's nothing like biting into a tree ripened peach and having the juice dribble off your chin.

I was in Safeway last Monday and bought six nectarines $2.99 lb. and they all hit the garbage today. They were like mush. So disappointed at throwing more than $7.00 away!! I envy anyone who has fruit trees.

Very nice! Been working three days, thinking about the canteloupe and watermelon in the garden. Came home tonight, barely any daylight left and picked my first ripe canteloupe. Also got some tomatoes and okra. I might have a crook neck squash by tomorrow, finally. The babies kept falling off the vine. The melons are getting big but I need to check them out in the daylight.
