I had to make that decision for a loved one. And now I feel some guilt for not doing it a day or so sooner. I believe that that's what he wanted, but it was just so hard for me to let him go, and to be the one to decide to let him go.

Think of it as a gift to her. A true act of love.

My dad died from COPD, it is long and painful, as you know. Hugs and prayers to you and your family.

so sorry for this - Perhaps if you turn it around, it will help a little - what if it were you that was suffering... the hardest thing but the most wonderful thing you can do is tell Jan that it's OK to go that you love her and will miss her but you don't want her in pain any more... I keep thinking also of the kind of life she would have if by some miracle she did survive.

Jenni, my BIL had to make the same decision for my sister that you are facing. We were all there watching my wonderful sister suffer. We gave our BIL our blessings. He did the right thing for her. Was it hard? It sure was. I have so many wonderful memories of my sister to get me through the sad times!!

I will be praying for you and your sister.

This is a sad time. Are you your sister's legal representative for health care? If so, why wouldn't you want to end her suffering? Think of her present reality. Your distress is separate from that. She's powerless. You're not.

When I worked in a nursing home, we used this quote when we sent letters of condolence to family members.

"Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome." Isaac Asimov

Woody had to do this for his mother and it was the hardest thing ever, he said. Personally, I can why it's hard to do, but I can see why it's the kindest thing, too.
