A Morning Glory Sampler (many pics)

We have this trellis at the end of the sidewalk and plant morning glories on it usually. This year the greenhouse grew a couple different varieties.

There is the usual Heavenly blue.

A variety called Mt. Fuji that has striopes.

And anothervariety called Tie Dye that varies greatly from flower to flower. Some are very light.

While on the same plant is another flower that is much darker.

Oh Ron these are beautiful! I have one that looks like it's going to go places, (big leaves etc.) but I don't know what color it will be. Your pictures reminded me I had better go water it today. It's (finally) really warm here in So. California.

nan-6161, I've never had a morning glory reseed. I've been told it's because I have several inches of bark mulch all around all of my plants and the seeds need to be in direct contact with the soil to reseed. I also do my best to collect every seed that the vines prodice to eithe grow the next year or for trades. If reseeding is a real concern, then try some of the japanese morning glory vines. They don't usually grow as large a vine, at least mine never have, and they don't make as many seeds either. mmqchdygg, I have a chain link fenced area in my back yard that is in full sun. It was there when we bought our house, the prior owners used it for a dog run. In the early years we used it as the "kids cage". We could put our little kids inside the area and they couldn't go anywhere. Now it's the WS pot area, germination area, and pot gheto area. On the edges of the inside of the fenced area are most of the MG vines. at least 40 different kinds. What I don't have room for there go in pots with rigged coathangers and stakes for them. Some of them are in hanging pots on shepard hooks and on hanging on the center of an arbor. I keep thinking that I will be able to weed out the MG that I don't like and have fewer, but that never works. Just about the only MG I don't like is the orange Noah. Not only did I think the little orange flower was ugly, but a friend had it in her yard and it took her almost 10 years to get the reseeds to stop coming up everywhere in her yard, in the middle of the lawn, in a crack in the driveway. Maybe it's a Carolina thing - or maybe just MY yard! - but I tried them two years ago w/bad results. They took off and grew vigorously ..... a little too vigorously as they topped the trellis and proceeded to grow into a huge, heavy knot at the top (practically overnight!). Guess I should have been pruning them, but I'd never read of that. Anyway, then I discovered they were a major Japanese Beetle magnet - worst beetle year I've ever had and they were the obvious attraction! Once the beetles finished making lace out of the leaves, the MGs contracted some sort of rust-like disease/fungus and ugly doesn't begin to describe it. By mid-summer I'd had it and tore them all down leaving bare trellises for the rest of the growing year. They were lush, blooming and gorgeous for about a week - not enuf payback for me. Gonna stick w/clematis for my little chunk of dirt. I do love them, and am very sad I can't grow them here so thanks for the beautiful pics above! BTW, I interplanted moonflowers w/the MGs and the moonflowers never made an apppearance. Don't know what that was all about.

I have that one. It's more of a magenta then a true red. It looks just like the pic on the link you posted. I don't do anything different with this one then any of my others. I don't feed often and water when necessary. Honestly I pretty much ignore them. I would hold the seeds and start them in the early spring. If you start them now you probably won't get blooms and it's not a plant that grows well indoors without full spectrum grow lights. There's quite a bit of trading Japanese MG's, including the Hige varieties on the seed exchange. It's a pretty flower. You'll enjoy it.

Now here I thought you had taken up sewing and were showing off your latest embroidered sampler.

But the real thing is even better - we only had room for one morning glory last year and it escaped and grew to the top of the arborvitae. This year I'm keeping it on the fence and not on my trees.

We had morning glories at our last house. They were looking good when it came time to sell. I finally figured out where I want them here at this house, but it is too late to plant them.

Those are so pretty, Ron! I never have much success with morning glories........tried again this year, but I think the seed drowned in a t-storm. I'll try again next year. It's a tradition. :-)

When I was a kid growing up on a farm, wild morning glories were an invasive pest. They invaded fields of corn and our garden. Once they got a start, it was a constant battle to keep them at bay. They could overlay pole beans and stop or curtail production. In the fields, the vines climbed corn stalks. I was amazed at how something so pretty could be so noxious.

I planted seeds last year, the vine got so big it pulled over the trellis but never bloomed.

Those are beautiful.

Ron, these are absolutely gorgeous! I love morning glories too. I have a single dark purple morning glory planted in a big tub with pink petunias. It is climbing a couple of long pieces of driftwood that we have 'planted' in the tub with it.

Just beautiful. I love morning glories, they remind me of my childhood. Never had much success at growing them though...

Ron, those are just beautiful. I have some MG's growing among my hummingbird vines and they look pretty neat in there.. Purple, pink and some stripy too. Great photos, thanks for sharing.

Nice pictures, I too have tried many times to plant these beauties... some years they take, some not.. We too have what they call "wild morning glory" not sure if it is a true morning glory, but is an awfull weed.. the blossoms are much smaller, white and yellow in color, the leaves in the vines are smaller as well, but these nasty guys can choke out your garden plants if not kept in check, they actually wrap around a plant and strangle them, they even killed a young aspen tree. But I do like the domestic morning glory. I will try again next spring.

Ron, I love Morning Glories. Had some beauties last year on a trellis. This year I decided to put Cardinal Climber there. Those MG's were mighty fertile, still trying to weed out all the seedlings.

The CC has overtaken the trellis, but not one sign of a bloom.

Oh, how something so pretty could be so noxious. Reminds me of a girl I knew. That was as charming as the MGs.lol

They are all very pretty. The top one is my favorite though, it is just beautiful.
