I really like your house. My MGs grow in full morning sun and then dappled mid-morning sun and then some shade in the afternoon. Did that help at all?

Morning Glories will do fine on the east side. Love your sweet little house. The porch is perfect for it!

Yay! So glad to hear that. I think the blue morning glories will look gorgeous against the red house, but everything I read says they need FULL sun. Maybe if I plant them on that far corner post they will get a bit more sun. Those trees to the south are pretty shady.

Looking at that photo makes me ache for spring to get here! I am so NOT a winter person. Blah!

Another thought that would be permanent would be any of the blue or purple clematis....then you wouldn't have to be worried about the MG's spreading into your flower beds.......and they will! They love morning sun.

If you have full sun you will have lots of flowers. If you have lots of shade you will have some flowers. Just enjoy the ones you'll get.

Morning glories are like a weed in my area. I planted one to grow up an ugly pole and every dog passing by urinated on it. It was also in afternoon shade. It grew like crazy. I finally ripped it out because it spread too fast.

Your house is charming, and I love your front gardens. I grew Heavenly Blue morning glory a couple years ago. I'm thinking of planting one to grow on an arbor this spring. I never had a problem with it re-seeding in my climate.

The blooms don't start until pretty late in the season. This is just one plant.

I had no idea clematis would grow on the east side... again, I thought they also needed all day sun. Now I have food for thought...

I have grown morning glories up our utility pole before, where they get all day sun (ticked the meter reader lady off too, BTW), and in our zone 4 they didn't re-seed.

Heavenly Blues never re-seed for me either, but Grandpa Otts do. Take caution with Grandpa and not let the picture of their pretty blooms on the seed package carry you away. Oh, they are pretty alright and if you don't want to plant Morning Glories every year they will suit you.

Kristin flower - now THAT'S some Heavenly Blue! Do you direct sow or start indoors first? I usually buy the plants to save growing time, but there again transplanting is sometimes tricky. They don't like being moved about.

I would be cautious about planting something as rampant as morning glories so close to the house (ask me how I know, been battling wisteria for a few years...). Personally, in your situation and climate I would go for a climbing hydrangea (hydrangea petiolaris). It's reported hardy to zone 4 and loves shade. It's also slow to grow in the first few years but then apparently gets going. I have seen a magnificent one growing up a porch in Western Scotland, in a North facing location overlooking a loch and fully exposed to the elements. It was magnificent in full bloom in June.

You have a very darling house, I'm sure it's going to be beautiful no matter what you select to plant.

Mine grow like weeds everywhere, including in the shade and do just fine. Plus, they seed like crazy. I don't ever need to replace them from newly purchased seeds. They just come up from last year.

Maybe it's a Carolina thing - or maybe just MY yard! - but I tried them two years ago w/bad results. They took off and grew vigorously ..... a little too vigorously as they topped the trellis and proceeded to grow into a huge, heavy knot at the top (practically overnight!). Guess I should have been pruning them, but I'd never read of that.

Anyway, then I discovered they were a major Japanese Beetle magnet - worst beetle year I've ever had and they were the obvious attraction! Once the beetles finished making lace out of the leaves, the MGs contracted some sort of rust-like disease/fungus and ugly doesn't begin to describe it. By mid-summer I'd had it and tore them all down leaving bare trellises for the rest of the growing year. They were lush, blooming and gorgeous for about a week - not enuf payback for me. Gonna stick w/clematis for my little chunk of dirt.

I do love them, and am very sad I can't grow them here so thanks for the beautiful pics above! BTW, I interplanted moonflowers w/the MGs and the moonflowers never made an apppearance. Don't know what that was all about.

In Zones 4 and 5, mgs are not really a thug, imho. I grew up in Z5, and my Mum kept the seed in the fall, to replant. Occasionally, the odd stray may sprout, but our winters are just too cold, our Springs very iffy!!
