Do you read the news in the paper or online?

I recently let my newspaper subscription expire. I thought I'd save some money and read it online. I hated it. Ordered the paper yesterday again. I loved reading it this morning.

What I really missed was the fliers. I shop specials, and the food and department store flyers come in the paper.

I used to love reading the paper while drinking my coffee. But when gas prices went up so high they quit delivering the paper here. So I read online now and watch the local news on tv.
My DS drivs to a neighboring town on Sunday mornings and brings back the paper for both of us.

I love reading my morning paper and will never give it up. On Sunday's my DH and I sit and relax for a couple of hours reading and sharing what we find. There is just something special about physically holding the paper. It's been a part of our lives for so long. I do read some news items online though.

On the other hand, I rarely see the younger generation pick up a paper and read it, my kids included. All their news comes from the net, but to each his/her own.

Do you read the 'What's New on Garden Web' banner?

    Q

Hey Sue, Welcome back to posting again, we've missed you. Do I read the "what's new on Garden Web banner? Yup, always do. have learned from experience that is where we are alerted to problems going on and info that we should be aware of. Like the one that is posted right now. Very cute wording to it too, I might add. "UPDATE: Wednesday, 12:00 ET: Who let the garden gnomes out? The partying got out of hand last night and they managed to bring down one of our servers. The Gnome Hunters have been deployed, but will need to turn off all posting for a few hours this afternoon (time tbd). Ouch -- that hurts, we know! Stay tuned for further updates. Same Bat Time, same Bat Channel!" Fran

Do you still read the newspaper?

    Q

Oh Grace, that is priceless. Definitely worth the cost of a newspaper subscription. He is a sweetheart. When I was a kid we had a fox terrier who would bring in the paper ,but only when asked. Later we had a Doberman who also brought in the paper. Unfortunately, he went up and down the street and brought us everyone's paper. We had to undo that trick! I will probably cancel the daily paper and just get it on the weekend, which is the only time I have to read it anyway. Part of me wants to keep getting it just to help to keep them going. Even our local paper can be read in about 15 minutes. I still like to look at it to read who has been picked up for DUI -- kidding! I hadn;t thought about reading newspapers from other cities online, except the NY Times and Washington Post. Last night I sat and read "papers" from several cities on line and it's interesting to see news from other places. I do love the Post --especially the Style Invitational. People are so clever!

puting new shingles over new... do i need felt paper between?

    Q

    Comments (6)
back when i worked for a roofiing company we always felt papered before putting on the new layer. we tried to never have more than one layer of shingles, but some people just refused to do a tear off. the felt was not for heat protection, but just an extra layer of waterproofing. as to heat destroying shingles, i don't know what area of the country you are in, but in my area you HAVE to vent the attics cause the heat build up will make the tar on the shingles just let go and soon none are stuck together. my attic was unvented when i bought the house, and the shingles were all unstuck from the one below them. i have spent many hours up there with roofing caulk sticking them back together to last a couple more years until i can afford to re-roof.

Is there a place online to purchase Paper Pizazz paper?

Joelle, I live in the middle of North Dakota and it is actually a bigger city/town (as far as North Dakota big anyway) - I'm hoping that they will get one in here some day soon. The other stores need the compition. The Ben Franklin here is the WORST I have EVER seen (the prices are really high and there is only a sale once every two months and then only on certain things) - and we've lived in California, Wisconsin, South Dakota and now back to our home state of North Dakota. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the Michael's!!!! Well, maybe not. My pocket book appreciates there not being one near-by. LOL!

I canceled my subscription before I left on my trip, but I think I will regret it. I am going to take the Sunday paper for awhile. Reading the paper online is almost $8. a month and $17. to get it at home each day. We get it free for two weeks to see if we like reading on line.

Just a couple weeks ago I changed my newspaper subscription to weekends only. Now I get the ads and the TV schedule, which I really want, and read the rest online.

I admit that actually reading the "real" paper is better, but I'm saving a few dollars, and sending less to the recycle.

So far this is working for me.

The main thing I miss is my daily dose of "Zits," my favorite comic strip.

I get the newspaper, read it, do the crossword, then put it in the bathroom my husband uses for reading material. He likes to take his time in there.
Sunday's paper usually has some coupons that I use too.
Otherwise I watch TV or check online for other news.

I used to always read the paper with my coffee in the morning. It was my "thing"
I read it online now, and just don't enjoy it near as much. I do have to pinch pennies now, so probably won't get it again anytime soon, although I do buy the Sunday editions from time to time. Enjoy just having it around. Makes me feel at home.

I'd sure hate to give up our newspaper. In fact, we get two of them. The local Ocala Star-Banner and the St. Pete Times. Like Matti, we love relaxing with the Sunday paper and I get 5 crosswords to work. We clip coupons to and check the Publix sale ads on Wednesday.

As Leslie said, home delivery is somewhat unreliable. Plus, it's a pain to have to stack all the papers until it's time for the recycle pickup every two weeks... So, we read online.

I like to read a paper. I get a bigger city morning paper that has lots of news, features and crossword puzzle in it. In the afternoons I get the local paper which can be read in 5 minutes or less. To save money, I get only the local paper on Sundays.

I forgot to mention in my post that after reading my papers I take them to the SPCA where I volunteer and we use them to line litter boxes. SPCA is always in need of paper and plastic bags (pooper scoopers).

I MUST have my morning paper with my coffee.

For months, i've had delivery problems. Newspaper "guarantees" delivery by 6:30AM, my coffee maker is set to grind and brew at 6:35. I feed the cat, pick up the paper from the driveway, make my mocha latte, and go back up to bed...where I drink my latte, reading the paper, comics last...then do the crossword and Sudoku puzzles.
    This is my routine.
When the paper is not there, I have to call, and then they promise it in 90 minutes...my coffee gets cold, and I get hot. Sometimes it takes 2-3 phone calls/90 minutes apart to get the paper...once, it took 2 days before they dug up the paper that hadn't been delivered. I pay in advance...I want my paper.

I have been a morning newspaper reader since I learned to read. I do subscribe to the on-line version for when we're out of town..but I have the sitter save the papers because working the puzzles just isn't the same on-line as it is doing them in ink on newsprint.

So yes, I do read the news in the newspaper...BTW: the Philadelphia Inquirer now has my account flagged to alert the district manager when I call in...and he delivers it right away.

I read two papers in the mornings, the Dallas paper and The Wall Street Journal. The Journal is just $99 for a whole year.

I look at news on line but it's not the same. I realy enjoy having a cup of coffee in the morning and reading the paper.

I like holding physical things. Love the newspaper, magazines, cookbooks.

Our Humane Society and the Food Bank have a huge dumpster for newspapers, magazines, office paper, etc. The recycling company picks it up and gives them the money. I take our papers, my mom's (she gets 3/day) and my neighbours' to the Humane Society for this reason.

    I'm adding a p.s. here.

I meant to say for the weekend paper I read it all, none of it online.

Also, since some of you mentioned bad or no delivery, I can't complain about that. In fact, where I live now, the paper box is across the street and a couple doors down. I've always lived where the paper was delivered to your door. With two replaced knees and a bad back, I didn't want to risk going out in rain, snow, hail etc, so I didn't subscribe. I had been a subscriber for many years and I guess they "missed" me and sent a letter to see if I wanted to start again. I told them if it could be delivered to my door I would. This is a driven route. They said no problem and ever since my paper is on my front porch, and most of the time it is on the chair on the porch beside my door! I have been here 6 years and only one time (except for a couple weather related) have I missed a paper, which after I called was brought to me within an hour or so.

Those newspapers who are lax with their deliveries should be aware that it is hard now to keep subscribers, and they need to do better. So I can't say anything negative about the paper.

Although, politically, I'm on the opposite side from the Editor.

I read two newspapers every morning....both locals.
And when I go on vacation, I buy a local paper and read it while having coffee.
I read the news on line, reading my old hometown newspaper and the newspaper of where my BFF lives.

We do not take a paper, husband doesn't want to spend the money on things to read because he doesn't like to read! So I watch the news on local television for my news. Sometimes I will go online to read about some of the news.

My paper is delivered every day, too. You're right that print papers have to accommodate their readers and deliver them well. My paper does, and will put the paper just where subscribers want it, even where I live on a drive route, though most of the papers around here are delivered to the paper boxes clustered together in places around the neighborhood with our mail boxes. For now, that's fine with us; kind of forces us to walk a bit every day, but when we're older, they'll put it on our porch for us.

Permit me to rant a bit: As the wife of a retired newspaper reporter, it saddens me to see our paper shrinking so fast - they just dumped another 60 reporters at his paper. It isn't possible to get the vital minutia of local life without reporters sitting in the field, digesting the boring stuff of the library board meetings, searching for local misdeeds, etc., without reporters in the field. I think we'll be sorry if newspapers disappear. Bloggers just don't do it---they read what others write and opine about it, and their scope is very limited. Same with TV news--dressed-up junk about car crashes and fires, imo.

I have been reading the local newspaper for so long, I can't remember when it wasn't part of my day. I am thinking, however, that I might subscribe to the weekend editions only as our daily paper is getting smaller and smaller.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Both. I subscribe to one paper (Long Island Newsday), buy another nearly every day (New York Daily News) and read my home-town paper online (Buffalo News). And I receive TOO MANY magazines. I'm not renewing any of them!

    last modified: 11 years ago

I used to get the daily paper but that news wasn't "new" and I got sick of how liberal the editor was so I switched to just the Sunday paper and when my subscription is up, I'll stop that too. I check online for the obituaries and I can get Zits online too. (ok, THAT sounds bad!) LOL

I thought I would miss the paper but honestly, I don't. I can check any online news site and have the up-to-the-minute news way faster than it gets printed and delivered.

And really, I get breaking news much faster by checking in here at the KT. LOL

We cancelled our subscription to the local newspaper over 20 years ago. It was hit and miss about getting it because delivery was totally unreliable. I also hated having to bring all that paper every week to the recycle center. I use to get my news from the radio or TV, and now from the internet. I don't miss it.

I hope the Chicago Tribune keeps publishing and continues home delivery until DH is either dead or too far gone to realize his paper is G-O-N-E.

The paper has gotten positively gaunt in size and in content. I hate that it needs to copy TV 'news' to sell. It's full of drivel about entertainment and entertainers.

We agree with you, shermann. DH has his MSJ and I was a J-major. The Fourth Estate is vital to our nation, and it's dying. (The little weekly I worked for as a young woman was never *vital* in the same sense, but even it served to bind the town together.)

I read the paper from back home on-line every day. and check the obituaries.
I receive the paper here daily. Like a lot of you, I have a routine and it's been that way for a long time. Our local paper has also let a lot of people go and has switched lots of things. We no longer receive a free tv guide, you must subscribe to that at additional cost to get it. The cost to renew our paper was $195.00 for a year. It kills me to pay that, but it just isn't the same online and I try to use all the coupons I can to get my moneys worth.

The only paper I've every really been interested in getting is the Sunday edition. Occasionally I'll subscribe for a while and it goes the same way. They give a great introductory rate then raise the price again and again until it costs more than to buy it at the store. And often the delivery service gets terrible. Now let me be clear - I delivered papers for a while so I know what the job is. IT'S NOT EASY! You get the old bags that have to have the paper in a particular position, facing a particular direction on the particular spot or they'll call and complain that it's wet or not received. The one I put into 15 bags! Nope that wasn't wet, but I digress. Additionally I recently spoke with a carrier and now the carriers have to buy rubber bands and bags for the papers from at least the one company. That stinks. That said, I've had great service but often get bad service. Let's face it, carrying papers isn't something you want to do all your life. It's actually fun for a while but it gets old with the whiners trying to get free papers.

But all that said, I enjoyed getting up about 4am on a Sunday, brew a pot of coffee, and look through the paper. I'd look at the headlines, read an article or two that interested me, checked a couple other sections and usually would look at the store flyers and coupons. Now the coupons are few and far between and the flyers are all available online. The paper is free online and I can get the current headlines, not something that's a day old. Most all the feature stories are in there and the big paper here doesn't have a TV log in it - but I always get that online too. The biggest paper here is nearly bankrupt for a lot of reasons. The subscription part is being ignored and they're losing subscribers which means MORE lost revenue since their advertising rates are based a lot on subscriptions. The secondary paper doesn't deliver to my area. I'm on the wrong side of the river for them apparently.

I get my news from a variety of sources. I've always believed in doing that. I always shuddered when people only got their news from one source. Sad really. I like different perspectives. But today, the newspaper isn't for getting the "news", as stated repeatedly above, it's for the features, the stories, the entertainment. TV, radio and the internet let you know what's going on within minutes or seconds, papers make you wait sometimes DAYS! But it's the tv logs, the crossword puzzle, the comics, the arts & entertainment section and the like. Even the want ads in the paper are being replaced by other more productive means. Papers have caused many of their own problems. I can't see a lot of these papers lasting. Around here I'd expect the two papers to merge eventually. Actually they already have. What was four papers a few decades ago are down to two. They used to have morning and evening editions, now it's one, the overnight edition.

Small town papers used to be fun. I used to subscribe to a couple different ones for various reasons but now they're not independent anymore, they're all part of a big chain that owns a dozen or more of the small town papers and they're carbon copies of each other. Again, you're as well off getting it online. Plus the post office can't deliver a paper in a reasonable time so I don't bother trying to subscribe to the out of town ones anymore. The cost is about the same as the "big town" papers. But I understand and didn't mind, when I would get it.

I mourne the loss of local news. I'm saddened to see the destruction of the local papers. But businesses, like people, get greedy and shoot themselves in the foot too often. And what's just as sad is the dissolving of the local newscasts too. They're all dumping reporters, going with more canned stories and are a variation of the national stuff. There's just not much out there anymore for truly local NEWS. The saddest part of it all is this is what people want. Ugh.
