Romania for Thanksgiving: really giving it thought

Group going and I am very interested. They are from my church. Right up my alley, as a retired teacher and home ec major.

Will have all the pricing, etc next week. Fingers crossed.

Gal leading the group goes quite often on mission work.

We will be at the Richard Wurmbrand School most of the week, interacting with the student and teachers. We will be discussing the American Thanksgiving traditions and helping them with poems, skits and costumes for a presentation they will do. We will serve them and their parents a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which we will help prepare. For those who go who have never been to Iasi, we will have a city tour to see the sights. In the evenings we will worhip at the Eclassia church International (that speaks English) and interact with students from around the world who are attending school in Iasi- most of these are Medical students, and many are Muslim, but come for the Fellowship. We will be returning home on Nov 30 or Dec 1. **** There is an option for a side tour to Salsburg Austria with some of the other team members. They will depart Iasi on Friday Nov 29 and travel over to Austria for the Christmas markets

I definitely want to do Salsburg.

Hi, mrlike2u =) yea, all the ones that rooted in bark seem to be doing real good. There's by far more oxygen that flows to the roots, vs compacted soil; and the watering can almost be equal to a rainforest as it just flows straight through, and quickly dries. Also, the EC has very small roots compared to the other two holiday cacti, so maybe next spring I'll transplant if it looks to need it. Good morning Josh! You're always too kind. I think that the almost immediate success of pure bark is what drove me to post about it. If you look through the threads, all you see are a good few handfuls of people that are failing to keep their holiday cacti, and orchids alive; and they either give up on them throwing them in the trash (which is really sad) or have some sliver of hope left to keep them alive (but most the time they're really nervous about it) So it's like, if I can provide some insight that I've learned through my experiences, and those learned by people like you, and show through pictures how easy it is; then maybe we can have more success stories. People need to understand that super market holeless pot, and this over dried out soil that never seems to get wet, doesn't success make. I'll go into stores and can tell that rot has set in, or that they're on their last leg, and I honestly just want to rescue all of them! I also notice that everyone comments with their own successful potting mediums, and they're all so different, and so many of them that people get confused and still don't end up with the answer that they originally asked (I think in a way it kind of scares them off.) So if by chance someone with a question clicks here and sees close up pictures of what mine are in, and how they're able to grow so successful; hopefully that person can take something away and have just the same (or even better) success story. Anita sent: Lots of lollipops - my kiddos love them! A bunch of daylily seeds 2 voodoo lily bulbs A Milk + Honey brug A Frosty Pink brug (OMG - I can't WAIT to grow these!!!) Hello Again..... Did I complain about the rain? I would gladly have it back right now, we are in the middle of a cold spell. It was down to 24 degrees this morning and has been in that area for 4 days now and snow is in the forecast for tonight. No Snow!!!! DH has his winners poker tourney tonight and asked that I go with him and tomorrow is the big FB day. So No Snow Please!!! DGS made the front page of our local paper this week, I was so excited. Sorry! By now I have really talked this topic to death. Luvs...So why aren't you painting? I have always had problems growing my nails until about 6 months ago.(Boy! that was a fast subject change) For whatever reason they are growing like crazy and are very hard and don't split and peel as they used to. The only thing I have changed is I now take a calcium pill as well as daily vitamins (gosh that spelling doesn't look right) with calcium. I'm almost to where I want to try nail polish, it used to make the problem worse. So...have you done a holiday table scape? I don't change forums often, but am always awed by the beautiful things there and how people have such wonderful ideas. I'll be looking for yours! Punk....I have played the granny game only not by that name and we used a grapefruit. Another fun game is to take an old pillow case, cut a hole in the toes and have all of the guys in the room sit behind a curtain and one by one place their leg into the case with their big toes showing. Every lady as to guess which toe belong to their spouse or friend. It is hilarious. We have done the same thing with a curtain (TS colored sheet) with a hole large to put a guy's nose though and have the gals guess who's nose they are looking at. I didn't leave a note on your table setting, I don't often post there as I'm not very good at decorating. Don't want to show off my ignorance. Yours is so beautiful and the only thing I might try would be a white linen table cloth. It might really add a softer back ground. To me, most of the time a wood finish doesn't enhance beautiful things. And saying this on the forum might get unwanted feedback for me and not very helpful to you. I hate managing rentals! We did that for 5 years in Calif. and I said never again! We rent to our DS and family but that has worked out very well. Can't believe your renter would do anything like that without contacting you. They should get the bill for the disposal replacement and labor and any damage to your septic system which might occurs from the water softener. And lets hope your renters didn't tell the satellite people to drill holes in the siding. I sincerely hope Paintingfools DGS is doing better and that we hear from her soon. Ang...where in the world are you? Ah! Better get moving! I have gobs of housework to catch up on, and then out with the decorations! Maybe if they are in the middle of the living room I will get my own hint and do something with them! Take Care! ...

Oh ima - first of all, I'm sorry about your mom. I hope that the chemo goes well and that she beats this thing and has many more christmas' with you and your family. Keep us updated. Second, I feel your pain... Last years thanksgiving and Christmas was a drama nightmare for us... This year, the drama train moved away to another state (marine brother) and so we don't have this going on for us this year. Yay! It is disrespectful and rude of your family to not even RSVP and are you saying, they don't even offer to bring a side dish? You do it all?? There is always the one person in the family that manage to make it aboutthem and their schedule and it always seems to be the one that collects their gifts and hits the road quickly lol It's late, it's thanksgiving eve and you don't even know when everyone will show? Crazy!!! Nor do you know how many exactly will show. Very nice of your dad's friend to back out but I am with you, I would feel guilty too. I can't even tell you not to feel guilty bc I know I would but I honestly don't think you should. Will your Dad get to see her at all? I hope this new 'friend' is a good thing for your dad -- sound like he just wants a friendship for now and that's ok :) My brother's wife is oh so dramatic and his children are mean, evil, brats that see my kids once a year or so and they fight like tigers. I love my brother but his family is awful and I don't know how he deals with it. Every year when we get together, SIL bring up the past, things we all just wish she would forget. It's been 17 years, move on! So we didn't like you when we first met you, not much has changed!! Ha just kidding. She is such a drama queen! And everything has to revolve around her. The one thing that annoys us is she goes to the store with us to buy food, doesn't offer to help pay and picks out things no one eats and then she doesn't even eat it. It's a waste! I'm looking forward to it being us (minus Dd) my sister and nephew (although they usually have some drama too) my parents and my grandma. My in law's are also coming.. I've been cleaning all day and can't seem to get Anything marked off my list. But I think it will be a nice day. Very relaxed although my grandmother has decided that 3 is too early, the Cowboys play at 3... It's a good time to eat lol in my opinion. So we've moved the time back to 5... Meaning I have to figure out lunch for us and my in law's ... Not something I planned for. And they only called me at 10pm. Hope everyone likes ham and cheese sandwiches and chips... Have a nice day tomorrow. I hope it goes smoothly. And again I'm sorry to hear about your mom.

In fact I do have some good winter gear, that I bought for a Chrismtas Market river trip on the Danube, few years back, and had to be cancelled.

The trip sounds more than interesting, I hope it works out for you to go.

But, they have turkey in Romania? I ask because when we had family here from Croatia, they'd never seen one, so we served a full Thanksgiving dinner that July. The children thought it looked like a 'dinosaur' - their description :)

They were used to much seafood, pork, occasionally beef (too expensive) and chicken was what you ate if you had no money. No turkey in the markets.

None of the fixings there. Not sure how or where the turkey will come from, being as they know nothing about Thanksgiving. But it is a project in the making and will be a wonderful one. Just know we will do the preparing.

Lady and other couple are very familiar with the area, the people, etc. It's one of their church missions. We had a couple from there come speak to our class not too long ago.

Everything will be taken care of from this end, and as to where they get it I don't know. I'll just be in on the preparation etc.

Friend of mine, this morning, told me her son went when he was in college and lost weight due to the difference in foods they eat.

Maybe that will happen to me :o)

Just recently sent a lot of colored construction paper there as they have none for their schools.

Just interested me, particularly, as I'm not into mission work, but sharing Thanksgiving and working with students is what interests me.

If it happens will probably be the last of my long distance travels.

Sounds wonderful! Salzburg is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, definitely a do not miss!

You might start on the shots now you will need and not wait until the last minute. DH went to Russia, etc and he got many including Hep 3 ( I think), yellow fever, He got his 6 month ahead also took over the counter stuff for upset tummy and diarrhea as they could not get it overseas. Really enjoyed it.

Thanks marie! I have to wait until I am definitely goiing and see what I find out at the group meeting.

I had to take shots before I went to Africa! and malaria pills for several weeks.

My daughter went to Romania when she was 14 with her gymnastics team. It was a trip of a life time.
The food was not good, so be prepared for that.

Well, if you think of it, the foods that we serve at Thanksgiving are foods from the Americas for the most part and were foods new to the pilgrims too. Turkey, pumpkin, corn, yams, cranberries, pecans.

My husband's company has an office in Iasi (pronounced "Yash") and he's been there to visit. It is a university city with several colleges and technical universities and lots of high tech workers. Most people are Greek Orthodox and the holiday schedule is different from the one you know. Jim likes the people and talks to them several times a week for business, There are some magnificent buildings there, it's considered the cultural capital of Romania.

Hope it works out for you, it would be a wonderful adventure!

if the feds have lifted the warnings on travel? know it's mostly middle east but there are hot spots everywhere...

when mother went years ago before the changes, she thought it was very depressing..but now I bet it would be fun...

Glenda, that sounds fantastic and such a great adventure. I saw one of those house hunting programs the other day and the couple were looking in Romania. I noted that the countryside is absolutely beautiful and the city looked charming and very historical. I do not remember the name of the city. But it appeared to be a beautiful country, so don't hesitate to go.
