Your best bet is another clone of V. dentatum. 'Red Feather' is one, but there are a number of others available. BTW, deer seem to prefer V. dentatums to all the other viburnums. Fairweather gardens carries a wide selection of viburnums, but they are finished shipping this spring.

You may find them (the larvae at least) eating at any time during the day, and perhaps also at night. I have Viburnum beetles larvae at this moment infesting one specimen of Am. Cranberry bush as well as one V. dentatum 'Blue Muffin'. The Muffin is in early stage of flower setting (when the buds are still green), and the Cranberry tree is at the end of it. I have embarked upon a green method-based "campaign" of controlling the pest in my yard - how successful I'll be, Lord knows - and my handpicking the larvae seems to give encouraging results: it went from 25 to 50 specimens picked at noon AND in the early evening to less than 10 as of now. But I suspect the remaining adult (flying) beetles are getting ready to take over any time... At which time (beginning of fruit set) I will start regularly spraying both shrubs with Safer soap solution. Look for a grayish larvae of about 1/4 in. long, or smaller/younger and blacker, underneath the leaves, along their "spines" (I ignore the right term). You easily pick it, or let it drop carefully in a paper towel before destroying your "harvest". What makes the hunt somewhat easy or encouraging is that I notice when a larvae attacks a V. trilobum leave, it eats it all the way, even when it is nearly all skeletonized and miserable. So you barely have to look out for larvae on fresh leaves! Probably they starts eating at the exact spot they emerged from the twig, then just occupate that same leave until it is entirely eaten, or when it is time to climb down the tree, burrow themself and turn into the insect form. At this larvae stage, if I had larger sized plants or plantations, I guess I would simply shoot them with a solid water spray from underneath (the critters don't clasp themselves to the leave very hard), in the early morning or in the evening. In V. dentatums, look for the beetles also in the flower clumps, that they seem to be fond of. I'll get an information link for you if you need it.

Baby food jar, silica desiccant packet (comes with shoes etc) and put in freezer. Let warm up to room temp before opening and using, so you don't get condensation on the cold glass. I'd pop the whole pollen cone in when it matures keith

Thanks Resin, that's really interesting to know. Wonder how they even discovered that pollen way out there in the ocean!? Sounds like it's at least POSSIBLE that any male juniper virginiana within a few miles/km of here would be able to pollenate this female Juniperus virginiana 'Hetz'. Originally I was thinking that with most dioecious conifers you needed both a male and female plant of the same species and cultivar in close proximity before pollenation could occur. However if this is indeed a member of the virginiana species, and if male juniper virginiana pollen can travel a very long distance, then perhaps at least a few of the cones might be viable. I'll save a few cones and see what happens. Like I said, might be a couple of years before I know whether the seeds are viable. I might also try a few cuttings from this specimen and see if I can get any to grow that way, althought I've read that upright junipers are more difficult to root from cuttings than ground cover junipers.
