Craft of the Day ~ fairy light jar

I found this on pinterest, looks interesting. I have not made one, let me know if you do.
I copied the instructions but you can see more pics on the site.

Fairy Jars

Mason jars
Glowing paint
Paintbrush

1. Wash your jar(s), and mix the paint with your brush to have the glowing particles evenly dissolved.
2. Make tiny dots in the inside of the jar. The more dots you make, the prettier the jar will look.
3. You're done. It's this easy. In daylight your jar won't look that fancy, but at night... it will make your room beautiful and cozy. Charge it with a lamp or with daylight and take it to a dark place!

Thanks everyone. The show was in June. I only sold one fairy house there, but many, many fairy gardens, planted shoes and bottle bugs. I had over $900 in sales. I think I had the houses priced too high because I lowered them some and ended up selling almost every one at the local farmer's market this summer. Originally I had them priced between $20 and $40. I lowered prices to $15 - $30 and they flew off the tables. I do have photos from the show but I am on vac. right now and using a laptop, so can't post any until we get home! I had a blast making them and plan to do them again this winter and do 2 spring shows with them. Arlene

Fairy lights are the "teeny bulbs" - just the tip of the bulb. You can find them at Michael's in the wedding stuff aisle. Some gals put them in their wedding floral bouquet as some are battery operated. I have used them in a wall hanging basket intertwined in the greenery. They are also great for something like a floral display on a table where you don't want a cord to be seen, or don't have an outlet available in that area. The only drawback to the ones I have is, they use the batteries right up so I only turn them on for an hour or so.

Hi everybody! Your gardens look so sweet! I love all the things you put into yours, Chris, and your fairy looks like a fun, goofy character! Her night solar light is so high-tech and goes so well with the mosaic stepping stones you made for her. Caroline, I can't wait to see yours all put together. I also think your door is charming and I love your high-rise concept! Murraysmom, the martin house looks perfect in the iris greenery and The whole set-p is very cute. I did fairy dish gardens for all my nieces and a grand nephew a few years ago. I had a ball making them. The boy got a dinosaur garden, though! I made myself a gnome garden. I bought a little cottage made of cement with a tray roof made so you could plant onto it. I glued all my stones collected from Great Lakes Beaches onto the cottage walls, but ran out before I was done. The roof planting has not worked out for me yet. I have had trouble keeping the plants watered. I also did not have enough light, then added a fluorescent lighting system that was helping a lot. Then the light bulb burned out, then I finally ordered replacements online, and then the frame I had made for the light system came apart..... So my poor gnomes have been neglected and they need their home to be rejuvenated. After I fix the lighting system! This was their world before the disasters struck: The bare side of the house, showing how the roof works, too. The other side of the house, with stones making an awning over the window. The laxy, sleeping gnome near the dining set, with the pond in the foreground. The sky view of the garden, with the gnomes' house in the upper right, their orchard in the upper left, and a blue stone fence along the edge of the orchard. The front of the cottage, with the metal front door ajar. The wise gnome is studying. Behind him is the bathtub I made from a tiny planter I bought and added little feet (glass beads) to and I also painted the rim and fleur-de-lis on the front gold. you know what would be really cute? Glue a small fairy figurine standing or sitting inside the lid, then display top side down.

Love the light jar... and also your idea jeaninwa, for display in a child's room. I'm also thinking maybe try this with a very large jar, with wide mouth for easy access, to set on a picnic table or patio table. How pretty would that be!!

Amazon has the glow in the dark paints... from a website called www.GlowInc.com. If you have Amazon prime, it's cheaper to get them on Amazon because of the free shipping. Probably cheaper anyway, because the shipping on GlowInc was over $10 for a 2 ounce bottle of paint. I didn't check to see if it would go down considerably if ordering more bottles.

I also saw that the Green glow paint lights up the most. Somewhere in there, I read that green was the brightest and that you should check the brightness rating. So I checked various colors on Amazon. They all have a statement like this in the description. The example is from the green paint.

"Highest Grade Strontium Aluminate Pigments (grade 0, Brightness Rating 33000 mcd/m2) Glow in the Dark Pigment for Paints"

To compare the other colors, brightness rating is as follows:

Blue: 9416
Pure Blue: 3209
White: 2471
Purple: 913

This fits with what I read elsewhere, which stated that purple is very difficult to 'recharge' and doesn't glow very brightly. If you compare all of those numbers with the green at 33000, you can see that green is far brighter than any other color, even the blue (which comes the closest).

I also saw that some other companies offered glow paint.. but satisfaction ratings weren't always good, from what I saw. This brand is supposedly the best and brightest.

I do think I will try this. I'm definitely going to get the green, but might get some of the blue too, to mix with it.

You can make your own glow in the dark paint. I found the powder on ebay if you want to try it. (type... glow in the dark paint)
