My new flowerbed.

I just finished making this today. It will look better in the spring with new growth instead of the old dying leaves. I will cut them back in Oct.

That sounds very nice, I beleve there is a smaller variety of mock orange that has yellow foliage, that would contrast the ninebark. Purple coneflower would companion the BE susan, dwarf russian sage and hotlips turtlehead are late season color like the pee gee. Blue leaved hosta are less prone to slugs.

Thanks Dave: Don't know exactly how may gallons but my pond is 9 ft wide X 18 ft long X 4 ft deep. The bottom is shaped like a bowl so the sides are slightly slanted. Thanks Anne: You are right I painted the weather worn bridge! Found the lighthouse at Marc's for $3. It's actually a terrarium. Thought it would look good by the pond. Last year I had a solar light in it. Was pretty cool. Guess the batteries ran out cuz it doesn't work now. Jenny

What a sweety...he got you 7? He must of broke down a bit on the perfectionism, cause as an x-perfectionist I can tell you those won't look so neat in the yard. Overall, he must of went more for practicality and your pleasure and desires then concern over cuttings. Give that man a big hug and kiss and find out what his desire is...bet ya' he's fishing for you to ask...lol Thanks for sharing that...not just the good news for you but now I'm thinking a few of those skinny pencil thin bamboo poles you find at the garden center with a garbage bag (bottom cut out)to pull up and down during early spring might just get those plants blooming earlier then usual. I can always throw some dirt in should a freeze snap hit unexpectantly...I wonder how brave I'll be... Tell your hubby you were thinking about doing that...just for fun... lol Oxmyx...don't know who told you that men are appointed those duties cause that's a crock of s**t... reality is it's the other way around!!! And I can think of a few more to add to that list but I'll spare our daughters...but slave should of been on the top of that list. And you from our generation...shame on you! All the work was suppose to be done before the man got home...then more for him and the kids. A woman learns and works until she drops.

Someone else was enjoying the flowerbed and the nice new plants this weekend while I was out of town!! This morning, he enjoyed a nice car ride to the woods near my office and I doubt he can walk 11 miles to my house without getting lost (or hit by a car)! My poor dog sitter was out in the flowerbed replanting plants on Saturday and I had to do the same when I got home yesterday. I will set the trap again tonight in case it has a friend.....ARGH!

I hope it keeps the grass out. I put double thickness of weed barrier on the bottom of the tires.
The tall thing in the middle is my forsythia bush.

Cool! Are those irises in the tires?
I once saw a pic on the web of a "wall" of tires, stacked & offset only 2-3 high, that were painted multi bright colors with flowers planted in them. It was well done too. Here's a pic of one:

BeeOHIO that is sort of like the one that I got my idea from. Yes they are iris. I had them planted right where the tires are now but they were so full of grass that I was afraid they were going to die out.

Kittywhiskers, If you dug up and replanted the irises, I would go ahead and trim the leaves back now. I wouldn't wait until Oct. I love your new flowerbeds. Hopefully it will keep the grass out, but sometime I think I am growing grass and the iris just pop up around them. I just dug an entire bed of over 300 irises, just to get the weeds out! Now I have the huge task of replanting them in the next couple of days.

Littlebit, is it ok to go ahead & cut back the iris leaves now, even if you haven't dug up/replanted them? I have some that I would like to go ahead & cut off it won't affect next yrs bloom.

Yes, they will be okay to cut back..I usually cut mine to about 4" from the rhizome..Did you leave a bit of the rhizome's top uncovered? They like their little "heads" bare. ;) They flower better...

What a neat idea! I'm not much of a gardener but that's a great way to bring interest to a simple garden. (I'm not saying yours is simple I'm just saying for added interest to my simple garden)
