First time for losing a sibling :((

My brother passed away yesterday afternoon. We had gone to spend the night with him. He was semicomatose. I "spoke" for a long time with him, cried, and reminisced. We're 6 kids in our family, me being the baby, and he the second to oldest. He was full of cancer, so to finally be free of pain is a blessing. I'm hoping and praying this is all the deaths we have in our family for a little while. I know it's inevitable, but would be nice to have a break.

It is hard, I know, having lost three siblings, and I am the oldest. Be glad that he is pain-free now.

mine is 6 years old and about 6 feet tall, which is normal growth. But remember it grows exponentially so it has about 30+ branches with many inflos with 3 inch flowers that do last and do not fade easily. Give your plant some time. Young flowers are often not the same as those when mature. Bill

I know what you have gone through. I lost my Dad when he was 41, I was 19 then I lost my Mom 8 years ago when she was just shy of her 61 birthday. To this day, I miss them both very much. I am an only child and it can be much of a devasting experience to go though this by yourself. I included all three of my children with everything I had to do for my Mom in her last days with us. Why would sunflower lose petals within the first week/

OK, the plot thickens. I think it IS bird damage -- and something else too (see below). Katob, to confirm your theory, here's this photo of the top of the sunflower. Not only are the petals missing, but clearly the seedhead is being picked at as well. I haven't seen goldfinches in the area in quite a while, but I guess the bright yellow of a sunflower bring them out: But in addition to this damage, something else is eating the leaves: And this may just complicate matters even more, but last night I went out and caught this beetle munching on the petals. He's smaller than a Japanese Beetle, an irridescent copper-red throughout, unlike a Japanese Beetle which I believe has the thorax a different color than the rest of the body (usually green?). Can anyone identify this fellow? Could he be eating the leaves as well? Thanks for any help.

Live there for a year and see what is there before making major changes. It looks like the previous owner may have been a gardener, and until you've seen a full year cycle you may miss some plants that are only visible at certain times of the year. Learn to ID plants vs weeds (the Name that Plant forum will be handy.) Depending on what is there, you may find that it's easy care or that it's far too fussy for your tastes, but until you know what you have, it's difficult to make decisions. What do you mean when you say "tree cleanup"? I wouldn't do any pruning of good-sized trees until you have had input from someone as to how to do that properly, and most IME trees don't need a huge amount of cleanup.

I lost my sister when she was 40 years old to pancreatic cancer. I would have been 36. That is 24 years ago this fall and it still hurts. Please except my condolences.

Jamie, you have indeed had your share of sorrow, and I am offering my condolences for this latest loss. The death of a loved one is not something one ever 'gets over' - we just learn to live with it. The pain is never-ending, not a day goes by that we don't think of those that have passed on. \

My Dear Husband died in 2007, from pancreatic cancer, and it is as fresh today as ever, but the fact that he's no longer in pain is the blessing I find in a very sad and lonely situation.

I have not had that pain but I have lost my father and I know how terrible that is and how long I cried myself to sleep.
I am so sorry for your loss but happy that he is at peace and no longer suffering.

I also am very sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. How sad. My older sister died at age 51 of ovarian cancer. Sometimes I still think that she is at her home in another state and then I remember that she isn't.

I am so sorry for your loss. I too am one of six and we lost one brother several years ago of a brain aneurysm. It was so sudden we never got a chance to say good-bye. I'm so glad you had that chance. My thoughts are with you and your family. I know he will never be forgotten.

I am very sorry for your loss, Jamie. I lost my second oldest sister (11 years older then me) three years ago. I was glad to see an end to her suffering, but I miss her so much. It's tough for those of us that are left behind. ((((Jamie)))))

I almost didn't open this because I can't imagine how horrible it would be to lose one of my wonderful sisters or my sweet brother. I know it's inevitable, but it must hurt really bad. Love to you (((Jamie)))

I am sorry for your loss. It is always hard to loose a close family member. I have lost both my parents, both brothers & one of my daughters. Try to remember the good times, he at peace & not in pain anymore.
