Baby Boy Baptism gift ideas

Hi, I don't post here often but when I do I know I can count on you for thoughts/ideas. My nephew is baptising his first born son this Sunday in a Catholic church. I'm not Catholic so I've never experienced this and don't know if there is a certain expectation/ritual/ etc. for gift giving. I have 25 nieces/nephes and 2 grand nephews/2 grand nieces. We have never had a baby baptised in the Catholic church and I'm wondering about gift ideas. I'm assuming there are gifts. Can anyone offer some suggestions? I don't want to get any more baby stuff as I know they have plenty and they live in a smallish 2 bedroom condo in the city.
I'm open to ideas, I have a couple but just not sure if they would be appropriate. Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts.

I agree with the nice card - w/gift card or a little check enclosed. I've been to enough Catholic baptisms and that would be more meaningful than anything from the array of bric-a-brac or religious "stuff".

My GS, also a Nathan, is like-minded as yours, chisue. Over the years I've bought many of the Science and Discovery toys from Toys R Us. He particularly likes the dinosaur excavation toys, where you excavate the bones and in the end construct the dinosaur. They range from small ones under $10 up to the larger ones that I believe are around $30. He likes all the magic rocks, fossils and crystal growing kits, microscopes, ant farms... oh, the list goes on! Azzaleas idea of a metal detector was a great one. Although my GS likes legos and games ok, they aren't something he's wild about. When he has money to buy his own things, he picks items such as magnets and butterfly/fishing nets. The big hit last summer was a bug zapper. And it had to make the zapping sound, not those new quiet ones. LOL

Things change quickly with a baby. I wanted bright and colorful so all these subdued pastels have me ready for a nap. My nursery had nothing on the floor a toddler would want to climb on or pull over to be used to help climb. That shelving with the lamp on top--DANGER DANGER WILL ROGERS. What feeding accouterments? LOL I nursed all mine until they slept through the night. We had a dimmer switch on the overhead light--the only light in the room. At night feedings I could quietly in subdued light nurse and change baby with little or no noise or activity. Baby went right back to sleep.I had a soft sculpture (Noah's ark and several animals velcroed to the wall above baby's changing table. Language learning was important to me so baby and I did a lot of animal noises and descriptions of fur and size etc. They came on and off easily for baby as they grew and needed something to keep them busy. I too would have your chair kiddy corner. I hope it rocks. I second the no time/need for feet up but everyone is different. No cords, on drapes/shades/lamps. Safety first. Love the fun knobs idea for the dresser. I would find a shade and go with a valance. I know they aren't THE THING--but they are safest for baby. Before you blink drapes will be used to pull himself up. Drapery rods pull away fairly easily. Have fun, I so miss those years!!!

One thing for sure- if you are near them, I am fairly certain that a dinner or meal or anything like that would be greatly appreciated. I know some people set up meal trains and it's wonderful. That is aside from a gift, but I think it's such a great idea. Someone sets up a calendar with the new parents' circle of friends/family and people can pick a date and bring dinner. It can be home cooked of course, or even just letting someone know that you are bringing over pizza and whatever. THey did this for my daughter when she had her 2nd, and it was really a wonderful thing to know that a few nights a week, dinner was going to be taken care of.

My hairstylest is having a long awaited baby. She had much trouble conceiving. Anyway, the couple is of Mexican and Guatemalan decent. They have lived in America for around twenty years and I wanted to get the baby boy a raggedy Andy doll but one that would look like it could be Mexican or Guatemalan. No such thing. Sheesh, there are only black or white Andy’s. I found a very nice seller on Etsy with good reviews and where you could choose hair color, hair lines, skin tones, doll length, clothing and more. So, although not an Andy I’m sort of excited about it because it with look like a kid member of the family. Shame about the Andy, my son carried his around for a few years but this etsy doll/brother should be good. It comes boxed nicely as well. Don’t have it yet though and I need ideas for a little something else to go with. ETA: Well after all my hype the WiseWomanDesignsShop is temporarily on hold as she is moving. There are others on Etsy though I think. Glad I got my order in in time. ETA: Didn't want to highjack by adding this on to Funky thread asking for idea's so I'll edit here. Nini, thanks for the idea of books! I found two that are in English & Spanish, one for tiny baby and one for tots.

It sounds like you have a large extended family, I do too and it can be hard to keep up with the gift giving events some years ;). If you want to give an actual something and not a gift card, I don't think you can go wrong with a book. Children need books, if only to be held and read to. They don't take up a lot of space in a young family's smaller home, and you can write a thoughtful message inside the cover, sign and date it. If it survives the childhood it may just become a lifetime keepsake.

I have a couple of cloth books that were mine as a baby, they'll be 65 yrs old next month :)

Thanks for the ideas, I checked into Savings bonds and they don't sell them anymore. The paper bonds are gone as of 2012. I am considering some silver dollars and a bank.
Yes, I have a large family and the book idea is a good one. I did get a book already and had it signed by both the author and illustrator, just so happened to know them.
I don't have children so I don't know what parents would want or need in this case.

My childrens' Grandmother made them a collage of coins and paper money - one of each denomination for the year they were born - pennys through $100 bill. It was so cool and the boys still have them, and they are 36, 39 and 41 now.

She got lots of compliments on the idea - definitely a unique gift.
