Have any of you taken Vicodin for pain? I was hoping it would really make me sleepy so I would nod off and not feel my jaw (emergency trip to the dentist this morning - I love him - he came in just for me) but doggone it I didn't even fall asleep in my chair like I usually do. I'm counting the minutes till I can take another and try again. I look like a chipmunk and feel like someone slugged me in the jaw.
Vicodin never put me to sleep. I hate the stuff and refuse to take it. My DS is the same way as I am. He'd rather be in pain than take it. DH on the other hand loves it. My doctor had me try Darvon the last time I had an injury and I really liked it because I could function well on it without the jitters I get with Vicodin.
I have never used pain killers after dental work other than a Tylenol or an aspirin. If your jaw is swollen I would put a cold pack on it for relief. Vicodin has no anti-inflammatory properties I know of.
For me, vicodin works in exactly 15 minutes and gives me 4 hours of pain relief. It's never made me drowsy or goofy or anything, but once I took it, it allowed me to get the sleep I'd lacked over the previous 3 sleepless (due to horrible cramps in my diaphragm) days and nights. Ah, food poisoning!
Barb, you should call your dentist and ask him what other pain reliever you should try. Maybe ibuprofen is what you need. Feel better soon!
I take one hydrocodone every morning. I think that is the same as Vicodin. I hate to but I have such pain in my hips and knees that I can hardly walk. I only take one if I am going to be working outside. By the afternoon when it wears off and I have my evening chores to do, I can hardly creep along. That is why I am often outside until late at night, finishing up taking care of the animals.
It doesn't make me nauseous, altho the first time I took it, it did, and it doesn't make me feel high. It just makes me feel like I can walk. Which probably isn't the best thing for my hips and knees but I am here alone and I have to take care of things.
Vicodin never made me sleepy (unless mixed with alcohol) but it did make me woozy. Woozy enough to fall getting out of the shower. I also bumped into things - got a lot of bruises while I was on it. The doctor eventually switched me to Percocet which didn't work nearly as well for pain.
I take one in times of extreme pain only. Nightly I take Tramadol at bedtime, for the arthritis in my whole body. When I overdo (on a ladder, painting, raking, etc-my back aches & pains so bad I have to do the vicodin-just 1 at bedtime will get me through the night & next day.
Hopefully you are feeling better on Sunday. It never worked well for me, didn't help the pain much and made me dizzy and nauseous. Tramadol works much better for my back pain, and usually doesn't make me sick.
Vicodin does make me sleepy. I've never taken a whole Vicodin. The most is 1/2, but even 1/8 has worked. It's one of the only drugs that does help with my pain.
For me Vicodin did absolutely nothing. Aspirin did far more. I had a broken shoulder, arm and ribs and they gave me the prescription at the hospital and everyone said "oh, you'll be in la-la land" but not me. Broken shoulder and arm are bad enough, but broken ribs are definitely far worse. When I hurt my foot, I got a prescription for Tylenol with Coedine and that did help, and helped me get to sleep which was a relief.
I am sure it might be to do with how many mil. each is also. I don't like it either. Xanex is for relaxation and sleep, and I like that one also when I am anxious, however, I don't think that a dentist will give a prescription for it.
When I injured my arm, I took a vicodin just before I went to bed the first few nights. I wasn't in pain but I hoped it would help me sleep. I slept very soundly.
Vicodin doesn't do much for me at all,and my doc has me on the 5/500 mg of it.When i had my knee done a couple months ago they had me on codien in the hospital when i came home they put me on percocet, and sometimes i needed 2 of those. Can't take nsaids either. Kathi
Isn't it funny how a drug will work so well for some and not for others? Honestly, if I have to have any pain med. I have learned to tell the Dr. NOT Vicodin. Tylenol works better than Vicoden for me. Also Vicoden makes me feel jittery and instead of making me sleepy I remain in a half in and half out state of sleep.
Wendy, Xanax has never done anything for me! Nothing! My dr. said it would help with my fear of flying. Nada, nothing. I've tried it several times since, just to make sure, and it does absolutely nothing. And yet I hear how it really helps others.
